-The Underworld-

The guests had arrived, hundreds and eventually thousands of vastly powerful individuals from all walks of life and different pantheons gathered for this special occasion.

To anyone involved in dealing with such a matter, the stress one had to bear could scarcely be imagined. Grayfia had to handle this matter with the utmost importance. The task and duty to properly welcome some of the more influential individuals fell on her shoulders, as she was not only playing the role of Lucifer's messenger and wife but also his queen.

In her opulent office within the Gremory estate, Grayfia conducted most of her work as head maid. From time to time, she focused on dealing with paperwork from Sirzechs' responsibilities among other duties. Now, her office served the purpose of organizing a successful younger generation devil's gathering ceremony.

"Lord Zeus, Lord Odin, and Lord Sun Wukong are the last ones to appear as of today's date. We have welcomed them as you instructed and shown them to their living quarters," reported a maid. "Unfortunately, Lady Nyx has not been spotted yet and Lord Zeus is uncertain of her whereabouts."

"Any complaints?" Grayfia inquired, going through a mountain of paperwork, most of which was supposed to be filled by her husband.

One of the many challenges she encountered in her duties was not just maintaining the mansion or ensuring Sirzechs did his work. It was the task of properly accommodating these highly influential individuals perfectly, without any setbacks. Her actions, just like Serafall, represented the entire Devil society, and a single mistake could lead to a political catastrophe.

The maid on the other end of the table shook her head. "Thankfully no, but…"

She braced herself, wondering who it was this time. Perhaps Odin had flooded some guests with his antics, or maybe he had put on another inappropriate movie. His exploits were known by many of the higher-ups — especially his treatment of the Valkyries.

"Out with it," she ordered, noticing the young woman hesitating. Her stern tone made the maid flinch, a reaction Grayfia had grown accustomed to seeing.

"It's not that, Grayfia-sama. But we have received news that Lord Odin disappeared from his room a couple of hours ago. One of his Valkyries is currently searching for him and has asked a few of our staff to help her."

A potential headache, one that she was half the mind to ignore but couldn't do so.

"Should we be worried about it?" the young maid inquired curiously, "I can ask some of our staff members to aid the woman in her search within the established perimeter of the ceremony."

Grayfia shook her head, repressing the urge to pinch the bridge of her nose. "There is no need for that. All of you focus on your tasks and leave this to me, we are already stretched thin and I will not tolerate any mishaps. He is most likely just wandering around Lucifaad."

Most likely hanging around at a local strip club or brothel.

She had received reports in the past of the old man wandering aimlessly around the red-light district. His motives were not completely clear, but she was partially certain there were no hostile intentions behind his actions.

"You may leave," Grayfia dismissed the maid with a courteous bow, leaving her alone with her thoughts.

Her head ached from all the work that was supposed to be delegated among multiple people. Among these were her husband and Serafall, who she feared might organize something ridiculous that jeopardized their relationships with other factions for a prank.

Especially in Serafall's case, that woman mysteriously disappeared for the last few days. Those working with her refused to open their mouths about the details, even Sona unaware of what was going on.

"I should check up on the others. The gathering of the new generation's devils is right around the corner," the silver-haired Queen thought. It was an important event, showcasing the forces and capabilities of a peerage to the entire Underworld, their allies, and even their enemies. Despite Rias having already faced Riser, that match was viewed by fewer people compared to what was to come. She could imagine the young heiress growing stressed and worried about the upcoming match.

"Hm?"

As she passed through the hallways, she noticed something odd. The door to the library was slightly open, with the sound of two people conversing on the other side. "Millicas?" Recognizing her son's voice, she wondered if he was having another study session with her mother-in-law. She walked towards the door and pushed it open silently, peeking inside.

"Hikigaya Hachiman?" she thought, surprised. Her guess was somewhat accurate; her son was indeed in the room, but neither of them was reading, despite the older one being surrounded by books on the table, his attention was mostly on the chessboard in the middle of the table...

"Knight to B6, huh? You're better than I imagined. Good thing I played a few matches against Akeno before this," Hachiman said, his focus on the chess game before him, tapping the table with a Queen piece held in hand. "Did you lie to me about this being your first time playing chess?"

Millicas smiled innocently at that question. "Eh, why would I lie?"

"Because you're a devil," he replied dryly, moving his piece to take one of the boy's bishops but hesitating for a brief second but decided to going through with it in the end. "Doesn't help that your father is Lucifer, I wouldn't be surprised if you inherited some of his traits through sheer observation alone."

"Grandmother told me to never lie."

"Of course she did. Regardless, make sure you don't have a match against Sona and win. Rias might end up with a new sister-in-law."

They spoke casually. After a few more moves, Millicas started to struggle, the emotion clearly visible on his face, which was carefully observed by Hachiman. Neither of the boys noticed Grayfia's presence. Millicas eventually blundered with one of his moves.

"Damn it!" he exclaimed, wanting to undo his move but stopping at the last second.

"I told you, you're allowed up to three undo moves," Hachiman said, a rule Grayfia found curious but understandable for her son's first match. Surprisingly, Millicas shook his head.

"No, I won't do it. It doesn't seem fair if I'm the only one allowed to have this much advantage while you don't. I want to win fair and square!"

"Too bad, you've already destroyed your chances," Hachiman said, placing a black knight piece close to the king, cornering it. "Checkmate." His victory was announced, and Millicas looked frustrated but was still awed by the results.

"How did you... I was sure you were going to... Wait, is that why... wow..." From flabbergasted to confused and finally understanding, Millicas realized how he was beaten.

"I lost," he said, disappointed. It was unusual to see him so defeated, which struck a chord within Grayfia's heart. "How did I do?" the young boy asked.

"Amazing at first. I'm still doubting your statement about this being your first time playing chess. You were a bigger and more troublesome opponent than some self-proclaimed experts. But you blundered and played terribly at the end by making a single mistake."

"But you just said I did better than some of your friends!" he argued.

"Well, you did, but I won't lie to you about the mistakes made. Whether in a game of chess or any challenge you encounter in life, always accept the advantage and criticism given to you. While it's noble to play fair as some would say, it's ultimately a stupid decision not to take the opportunity. You're a devil, not an angel or a saint. Get used to taking every little advantage and prepare yourself against the worst outcomes. Normally, I wouldn't give such advice to a kid, but you're Lucifer's son. It's best if you learn these things young."

That was… unexpected, never had she thought Hachiman would give such sage advice to her son. Though it sounded harsh, ultimately the woman couldn't bring herself to deny its validity.

"So I should play dirty and win at any cost?"

"Yes," he answered unashamedly, earning a weird stare from Millicas. "If you're hard to predict, people won't be able to take advantage of you. It's easiest to manipulate earnest and truthful individuals who like to play the saint. Your father might seem fair and honest, but it's likely just a mask for dealing with the underworld's most troublesome people."

"I'll keep that in mind, teacher!" Millicas said.

"I'm not your teacher, you brat."

"Ah! Sorry, big brother!" Millicas grinned cheekily, earning a chuckle from Hachiman.

"Say that in front of Rias, and she'll be grinning from ear to ear."

Grayfia knew it to be true and could already imagine the face Rias would make. She decided to stop eavesdropping on her son and Hachiman, though a part of her wanted to enjoy the scene a little longer. Shaking her head, she walked forward, catching the boys' attention.

"Ah! Mother!" Millicas exclaimed, surprised, and instantly became fearful the next moment. "I wasn't skipping my studies! I finished all of them, I promise!" He tried to stand properly, but his panic caused minor mistakes in his posture.

Her lips twitched upwards, but she managed to maintain her composure. "That is good then. May I know what is going on here?" she asked, looking towards Hachiman, who was halfway across the room towards the exit.

"Here I was expecting not to get involved in any of this," Hachiman muttered, turning back to face her and Millicas.

She smiled, "I recall we agreed upon something not that long ago. There is no one around to eavesdrop on us, so you don't need to be shy."

"Yeah, yeah, I know. I haven't forgotten… Nee-san"

"Good boy."

(Hachiman POV)

Those words just sounded wrong, almost weird, to have her call me that with a smile on her face. To avoid an awkward conversation, I had to change the topic as soon as possible.

"Your son is quite an interesting brat, I must say. It was a bit strange to find myself back in the underworld so quickly, with the red sky above my head and no sun or stars visible, only the artificial light created through some magical spell. He is definitely your son with Sirzechs' looks. He's even smarter than his aunt at such a young age. I'm impressed." I said with a small grin, finding it hard to hold it back.

And I meant every word. Give this kid a few years to hone his skills, and he might just have Sona quaking in her boots. The way he thinks ahead is impressive, even if his inexperience and innocence hold him back for now. With some polish, he could be a real force to be reckoned with.

"Are you perhaps searching for something in the library?" Grayfia finally asked the question I knew she would. There was little doubt that she wouldn't believe I specifically came here just to meet her son, which wasn't the case, to begin with. I looked around, seeing the hundreds of thousands of books neatly arranged within the shelves of this gigantic library, and hummed silently.

"I've been meaning to ask - do you know anything about the origins of this devil-sleeping disease? Never really looked into it myself," I said, my eyes scanning the vast library shelves. The question had been nagging at me, and who better to ask than the Queen of Lucifer herself?

She blinked, tilting her head in confusion. "That is a hard question to answer, for we ourselves are not certain where it came from or even how it affects us. Had we known the details, then I'm certain someone like Ajuka would have found a cure by now."

Made sense. That man was an equal monster compared to Sirzechs, but is ridiculously smart. "Why do you ask?"

Uncertain how to answer, I thought about it for a few seconds. Sirzechs explicitly told me that this matter was reserved for very few people to know. Whether it involved Grayfia or not, I never asked, and I promised to keep it a secret. But just looking at her confused expression, it became obvious that the maid was not aware of the matter Kuroka and I were dealing with, so it was best to keep my mouth shut.

"No, it's nothing too complicated. I just became curious about the disease after seeing how it affected even high-class devils. Honestly, no matter how I look at it, it hardly makes sense. To be forced into basically a coma for no real reason or without any prior symptoms or wound is odd, to say the least. Given how it can be healed through the effects of senjutsu, I thought for a while that it was some sort of curse. Yet, the reason why it could never be cured in the past is that, other than natural energy, it would require angelic powers to cure such a disease, which you devils obviously can't get in touch with."

"A curse? It is an interesting theory, which Ajuka himself proposed once. But the actual analysis never proved it was a curse. It differs far too much from anything we've seen so far. Maybe with Kuroka's help, we might uncover something."

I agreed. Perhaps there would be some progress on this matter, given that Serafall's mother was the first case ever to be cured of this illness. "Let's hope that's the case. I am no doctor or an expert when it comes to such things, so don't mind my rambling. Just trying to occupy my thoughts before the young devils' gathering starts."

"Will you be attending the ceremony?" she asked.

I gave her a look before nodding. "I will. Not like I have much of a choice."

(A few hours later)

In the blink of an eye, nighttime rolled around and I found myself wearing an uncomfortably tight suit sipping on some juice at the corner of a large ballroom. Surrounded by many Devils around Rias' age, all of them soon to be participants of the Rating Games.

Last I saw Xenovia, she was holding a plate filled with plenty of food with Irina doing the same. The girls were in awe at the different kinds of exotic food presented to them, the latter even crying at the taste of caviar which her blue-haired friend kept inhaling like there was no tomorrow.

Of course, I walked away from that and found another small dark corner to hang out.

"Ara ara~ you look handsome." By my side stood Akeno, wearing a traditional Japanese kimono, one that suited her quite a bit in my opinion. Attracting eyes from all around the room which she, for the most part, didn't seem to even care about. "Mind granting this innocent maiden a moment of your time? I have been terribly lonely lately."

I raised my eyebrows but didn't deny her whatsoever, my silence serving as an answer in itself which she recognized. "You look amazing, never saw you wearing this kimono before."

"Because it's a gift from my mother. She told me it belonged to her, how it survived the fire I'm not sure, but she gave it to me to wear for the party. It does suit me quite well." She did a small turn, making it harder for my eyes to remain up to her face yet I managed to do it.

"I will admit, I was half expecting your group and Sona's to come here vested in our school uniform."

"We almost did, Rias was just wearing hers till she saw me put this on," she said with an amused smirk, not taking a genius to figure out that her King either did it out of jealousy or because she felt competitive. "So, from the look on your face, what crazy thing are you about to announce today?"

That made me go still, "That's a rather random question don't you think?" I was pretty certain this girl did not have the ability to read minds, but given how Devil magic worked… I refused to put it past her.

"You're not denying it. And you have that look whenever you're overthinking about something. You haven't even noticed this woman crying beside you."

"..."

To my surprise, I turned my gaze around, and just like she said, a young woman wearing a rather nice-looking blue-colored business suit stood like a lifeless zombie beside me. A rather young woman who resembled someone in her early adult years physically. With striking long straight silver hair and aqua-colored eyes devoid of any life, aside from despair and self-loathing.

"—?"

As if noticing me, her head slowly turned around as our gaze met for a brief second. 'Shit.' Quickly turning my attention back to the ground, I rather preferred to not get involved with whatever was going on with her. "So, as we were discussing, I haven't noticed Ria—"

She was gone, the mischievous succubus now all the way on the other side of the room with Rias waving at me with a small smirk. The redhead was visibly busy greeting the people around her to notice our interaction.

"Um… excuse me." Damn it! That traitor left me to deal with the weird woman who approached me sheepishly with a pitiful expression. I could always pretend I didn't hear her greeting and just walk away—

"—!?"

The floor lurched violently, nearly sending my drink flying. I managed to keep my grip, but the woman beside me wasn't so fortunate. Her glass tipped, dousing her crisp blue suit in a spreading crimson stain. She stared down at herself in silent horror, as if the wine had somehow broken her out of her previous daze. I grimaced, knowing this night just got a whole lot more complicated.

"MY SUIT! NOOOOO!"

The pure guttural scream of despair was followed by a huge smashing sound from somewhere nearby. Worried by it, I noticed Rias without hesitation went to the center of the room from where the noise had originated from. The other guests soon lost interest as well, as if it were a regular occurrence.

Weird… What was it? My curiosity grew beyond my control, I had no choice but to follow the main group. "A-Ah, p-please wait!"

That same strange woman for some reason decided to follow me! Why was she even following me!?

Soon, I reached the center where I got a good look at the scene. The tables, chairs, and decorations were all shattered into thousands of pieces. The devils were split into two camps who glared at each other for some odd reason as if ready to start a fight at any moment. Weapons were out, including Kiba holding a large longsword, and Koneko wrapping some kind of bandages around her knuckles.

One side was made of evil-looking goblin-like devils, characteristics that were not uncommon in the Underworld. The other side seemed to be made of relatively ordinary ones, however, both groups gave off an aura that was full of cold killing intent, to the point of being visible.

"Looks like this is going to become a bloodbath."

"R-really? This is bad, I can't confront them and create a scene!" The woman muttered, well, her frantic scrubbing of the wine off her suit certainly attracted quite a few gazes. This along with the stream of tears running down her face while I kept hearing her weeping about the cost of the suit.

Just who was this person?

Within my field of vision, I spotted a table safely tucked away in a corner of the hall, surrounded by servants cleaning up the mess… a familiar face I instantly recognized.

Mostly because of those muscles that threatened to tear apart the suit itself. Sairaorg spotted me somehow and showed a smirk, placing a finger in front of his mouth as a silencing gesture and pointing at the commotion happening in front.

"Zephyrdol, can you not help starting a fight at a place like this? Do you want to die? Do you really want to die? Even if I kill you, I won't be blamed by the people on top." Spoke an individual surrounded by elegantly dressed devils, glaring back at those whose features resembled that of a goblin with their dark green and pointed ears.

"Ha! Finally managed to gather enough courage to speak, didn't you?"

The two groups glared at each other. A female devil, one with green hair stepped forward, glaring at the man, and spoke coolly. "Keep being disrespectful and I'll kill you"...

Wow, well that was quick, I definitely recognized her. She wore glasses—and her cold and sharp gaze certainly was intimidating. Even the demonic aura wafting off of her body exuded the same cold sensation. This, further accentuated by the blue robe with… leather armor? All of it wrapped around her body and exposed very little skin, honestly, it contrasted a lot with those in the ball wearing very revealing dresses.

I almost wanted to call it a military uniform.

"Ha! I'll say it again, you frigid bitch! I offered to give you a private lesson, but the high-and-mighty Agares heir can't handle being alone without her bodyguards, can she? What, afraid you might actually enjoy yourself for once? No wonder you're still untouched - bet you've never even held hands with a guy! Typical Maou family women, all of you. Uptight virgins who wouldn't know a good time if it slapped you in the ass. That's why I generously offered to break you in properly. Consider it a public service!"

Well…What a vulgar-mouthed individual.

Was he related to Freed perchance? That late rogue exorcist was the only one in my mind who spoke like that.

This person had a black magic-like tattoo on his face, and his green hair was standing on its end. As expected, there were also black magic-like tattoos on his upper body, which was left bare and uncovered. The ornaments on his pants jingled and clanked, an outfit that looked both tribal and formal at the same time.

A delinquent, no matter how I looked at him, he's a delinquent! Heh, so there are delinquents in the other world as well. His face...seemed good-looking, but his features were just too dangerous-looking…

...So, what happened between these two?

As if understanding my confusion, Sairaorg sidled up to me, his massive frame somehow still graceful as he leaned in conspiratorially. "Welcome to the devils' playpen," he said with a wry smirk. "This is where we're supposed to mingle and make nice before the real fun begins. But as you can see, putting a bunch of young, ambitious devils in one room rarely ends well." He gestured to the brewing conflict. "The old devils eat this shit up, though. They think it builds character or something like that. Personally, I find it all rather useless, but what can you do?" He shrugged, his muscles straining against his suit. "Politics, am I right?"

"I see," that caused me to look at the woman next to me who had once again lost all hope in her eyes after failing to remove the wine stains. "Are you… a Devil?"

'She does not give off any demonic energy, her powers are enormous but very foreign in nature. From what I can sense, she possesses powers I have never encountered in the past. It is strange, but she does not seem to hold any hostile intentions.' Vritra added, his statement confusing me even more.

"A-Ah, N-No I'm not… I just followed the crowd and ended up here…" I didn't know it was possible to look even more pitiful in her current state.

"..."

After adjusting his neck with a snap, Sairaorg stepped forward to the two teams who were glaring at each other. "Want to help me out?"

I shrugged, "You have it handled, rather not show off my Sacred Gear in front of a bunch of hot-blooded Devils pumped with adrenaline." I made no attempts to restrain him, for he was the last person in this room who needed any kind of protection.

'I feel hurt, partner. Am I not reliable enough to make you the one person who needs the least protection compared to this Devil instead?'

'Are you developing a sense of pride with such things?' he went quiet after that, I could already imagine the serpentine dragon pouting in my soul.

Sairaorg came between the two sides who looked like they were about to start brawling. Seekvaria and the delinquent turned to him with different intents in their eyes. "Seekvaira, princess of the Agares family, and Zephyrdol, the rebel child of the Glasya-Labolas family. If you go any further than this, I will be your opponent. Listen, I know this is sudden, but this is your last warning. Depending on your next words and actions, I will use my fists without mercy."

"..."

"..."

Sairaorg's words had such intensity in them for certain, a sort of dominating presence that pressed upon everyone in the room. What an effective threat I must say, I also felt the tingling pressure of it on my body.

That battle junky was genuinely hoping for them to continue fighting and give him an actual excuse to get in a fisticuffs!

A vein started throbbing on the forehead of the delinquent devil at those words and turned red with anger. "For the incompetent Bael family to—Argh!"

An intense blow resounded through the hall. Before he could finish speaking, the Bael descendant's fist blurred even to my eyes and his opponent ended up getting slammed into the wall of the hall and losing consciousness in an instant. His unconscious body dropped to the floor a deadly silence filling the hall.

"Such strength! I was not aware the Devils had such strength, I should inform Odin-sama about this…"

"Oi, if you're some kind of spy then don't forget I'm standing right next to you."

"S-Sorry! I didn't mean it like that! I'm not a spy."

Her watery eyes didn't help. Taking a deep breath, I just decided to help this individual before I got involved in some unneeded drama. "Again, who are you?"

"Ah, forgive me for my manners!" She hastily bowed her head, not noticing how the now-soaked buttoned shirt of hers hugged her chest. Making even the bra visible, something I prefer to remain quiet about in order to avoid another loud reaction from her. Not because I enjoyed the view. Nothing so shameless as that. "My name is Rossweisse, bodyguard to Odin-sama and Valkyrie. It is an honor to meet you, Black Dragon King, I have heard many stories about you."

"... A Valkyrie?" That certainly caught me off guard, further adding the questions I had in mind. "So, why are you here instead near Odin?"

She laughed uncomfortably, scratching the back of her head and avoiding eye contact. "I… I kinda got lost."

Wait, she was being serious when she said that before?

"C-Can you be so kind as to help me find Odin-sama? He should be somewhere in the castle…" a god of that caliber wandering around the castle with these battle-hungry brats searching for trouble… great, just great.

"Just stay near me, don't attract any attention, and keep quiet." Best I get her out as soon as possible. It was a good excuse for me as well to get away from this place, since Sirzechs still wasn't around, I really didn't have a reason to stay longer than necessary. Rias and Akeno were more than capable of handling themselves in such gatherings, unless they needed my help then I could always teleport at a call.

So, I turned my attention back to the center and slowly started to walk away with Rossweisse in tow. Hoping that Sairaorg would be able to keep everyone's attention on him.

"I told you. That was your last warning."

In reaction to the actions, many of the surrounding Devils grew restless.

"You bastard!"

"Damn Bael family!"

The delinquent's peerage members nearly rushed forward from the momentum of losing their King, but before they could even make a single move, a loud clap grabbed everyone's attention. I cursed audibly, seeing both Sirzechs and Ajuka standing at the second entrance.

Worst of all, his eyes landed on me and his smile grew ever so slightly.

Shit, he knew, Serafall must have told him.

What was he planning?

Don't tell me… That heartless fiend!

"It's great to see all of you this energetic," he said loudly, his voice forcing the previous restless group to calm down instantly. "This has been a very interesting year, I am sure all of you are more than prepared to prove your worth in these upcoming Rating Games and push your dreams to fruition. But before I begin my speech, I have a special announcement to make."

With a snap of his fingers, the room went dark with the only source of light shining upon both me, Xenovia, and Rossweisse. The latter let out a yelp at suddenly having everyone in the room look at her, whispers of her appearance passing around audibly and forcing her face to turn crimson red.

"I leave you alone for a single minute…" I heard Rias whisper, looking at the Valkyrie with clear suspicion in her gaze due to the misunderstanding while Akeno was struggling to hold her little giggles. Yet even Sona looked at me with clear confusion, wondering just what was this about.

"I would like to present one of our long-time allies, Hikigaya Hachiman, or as you may know him, the Black Dragon King." Sirzechs' voice resonated within the room. "Many of you may be confused by his presence here, those familiar with his story while wondering why he is present here in the first place. Well, let me be the first one to announce his official participation in the Young Devil Gathering tournament!"

The whispers increased in volume, and many more hostile stares now concentrated on me in an instant. I glared back at the shameless siscon Maou, wondering just what the hell he was doing!

"Many of you are maybe wondering if this means he has officially joined a peerage," both Sona and Rias went still in the corner of my eyes. Their faces stiffened with thousands of thoughts roaming within their mind, fully expecting Sirzechs to announce their names. Sona had a nervous yet fully determined expression while Rias held a great amount of joy and pride.

Yet the words that were announced the next moment completely shattered their expression.

"Well, that is not the case. For exclusively this year alone, he shall be participating in the young devils gathering Rating Game as an independent party." He and Ajuka both clapped their hands with a few following along, yet it did little to change the demeaning silence that fell upon the room followed by a huge commotion that nearly ruptured my ears.

"WHAT!?"

"THAT CAN'T BE ALLOWED! WHAT IS THIS NONSENSE!?"

"A human allowed to participate!?"

"Really!? I can't wait!"

I was pretty sure that the last voice belonged to a weirdly overjoyed Sairaorg who, from my point of view, looked at me with such an intense gaze that my non-existent purity felt in danger.

As for Rias and Sona, both just stood there with their mouths hung open.

"Wait… why am I under the spotlight as well!?"

Wish I could answer Rossweisse's question, but I was far too preoccupied with holding back the desire to punch Lucifer in the face for basically setting a large target on me for no reason!

"You better have a good explanation for this," I mouth out to the red-haired Lucifer, to which the man just smiled innocently.

"All in due time, I'll explain everything."
