If the market drops 10% and then grows 10%, and you invested before this happened, you definitely made a loss.
Besides the fact that most trading platforms have a transaction fee, if you started with 100$ invested and it drops 10%, you're left with 90$. If it then grows 10%, it's 10% of 90$, so you'll end up with 99$.
