They wanted to use the demonic energy to see if they could interfere with the barrier and affect those people inside the barrier.
This would be the first time those Abyss humans feel this much satisfaction. Unfortunately for them, they already realize that even though they are somehow able to interfere with the barrier, the demonic energy is immediately absorbed by something.
