Chapter 278 - Chapter 275

"Is your lord really that kind-hearted?" The gray-haired girl tilted her head and said coldly. "What do I have to pay in return?"

"That's not something I know," The soldier awkwardly tugged at the corner of his mouth. This girl was giving him a lot of pressure, just like the instructors from the war wolf squad.

"Oh!" The gray-haired girl lowered her eyes and fell silent.

"Uh…" The soldier felt awkward, his mouth hanging open, not knowing what to say. This was the first time he had encountered such a situation.

"Phew…"

The soldier let out a breath, clapped his hands, and said, "Alright, everyone, let's go outside. There's wheat porridge to eat in that small forest."

"Really?" A child asked weakly.

"Really. A lot of people have already gone there," The soldier said softly.

"Do we not have to pay anything?" Another child asked.

"Uh… Why are you asking that? Who taught you to ask such things?" The soldier furrowed his brow, curious. "We're giving you wheat porridge to help you survive."

The children didn't speak but instead looked at the gray-haired girl, their eyes filled with awe and fear.

Is it her? The soldier raised an eyebrow. How could that be? This girl looks about eleven or twelve years old. How could she say something like that?

"Eating food comes with a price. There's no such thing as a free meal in this world," The gray-haired girl said coldly.

"Who taught you that?" The soldier furrowed his brows. Such a young child, yet she spoke such profound words.

"My older sister. She said that people who give free food always have an agenda," The gray-haired girl answered honestly. When she mentioned her older sister, there was a slight fluctuation in her emotions.

"…" The soldier gave a bitter smile. What can I say to this? Reasoning with a little girl? It's a waste of time. He decided to leave this problem to Deputy Director Aiden to handle.

"Let's go, we'll go eat the wheat porridge first." The soldier stood up and moved aside to open the door.

The gray-haired girl stepped forward, her frail body moving outside. She looked so weak that it seemed like a gust of wind could knock her over. Her face and body were covered in dirt.

The other children were similar, but they kept a distance of two or three meters from the gray-haired girl, completely unwilling to approach her. This scene surprised the soldier.

"Puff thump!" The gray-haired little girl stepped into the snow, but her body lost balance, and she fell onto the snow. It seemed like she was running low on energy.

"Hey! Be careful."

The soldier quickly stepped forward. Just as he was about to reach out to help her, the girl's green eyes made him retreat. They were lifeless, cold, and indifferent.

"…" The soldier stood there with his hand still raised, watching as the little girl got up on her own and continued walking forward. Her straight posture and gray hair blowing in the wind gave him an impression of cold dignity.

"Did I overthink this?" The soldier shook his head. He could see in her silhouette the likeness of someone.

And so, the soldier led the eight children toward the small forest. Before they left, they all turned back to glance at the body in the house.

More than ten minutes later, the soldier brought the children to the small forest and went to report to Aiden. He decided to leave this troublesome matter to him.

"This is…" Aiden stared at the seven or eight children before him, particularly the gray-haired little girl who left a deep impression on him. She showed no signs of panic, only cold indifference in her eyes.

"Deputy Director Aiden, they were found in a house. They should all be slaves," The soldier saluted and reported.

"Hmm! Take them to eat the wheat porridge first, then give them some animal pelts to keep them warm." Aiden ordered.

Then, Aiden picked up his binoculars and continued monitoring the activity at the gate of Blade City. As long as Blade City didn't dare send out its knights, they would have plenty of time.

"Deputy Director Aiden, this…" The soldier called out awkwardly from the side. "This little girl doesn't want to come with me."

"Doesn't want to?" Aiden put down the binoculars and turned to look. He saw the gray-haired girl staring directly at him.

"What's your name?" Aiden frowned. This girl gave him a strange feeling, as if he wasn't dealing with a little girl at all.

"Amelia," The gray-haired girl said coldly. "If I eat your wheat porridge, what will I have to pay in return?"

"Uh…" Aiden furrowed his brows. He hadn't expected this kind of question. He was silent for a moment before shaking his head. "For now, you don't have to pay anything."

"That's impossible. The last time I ate food given by Blade City, the price was that I'd be sold as a slave in the future." Amelia said coldly, her green eyes showing no emotion.

Looking at the girl who seemed so serious, Aiden wondered who could have raised such a child, or what kind of experience she had gone through.

"What can you do?" Aiden decided to change his approach, thinking that he might need to talk her into it.

"I only know how to kill." Amelia replied coldly, her green eyes narrowing, focused on Aiden's throat.

"What did you say? Kill?" Aiden widened his eyes in shock, staring at the skinny girl, wondering if he had heard wrong.

Amelia remained expressionless, coldly staring at Aiden but saying nothing. Her silence and demeanor were eerie, sending a chill down his spine. The soldier chuckled quietly, eager to see how Aiden would handle this situation.

"Report! We've caught a messenger from the beastkin knights."

At that moment, two veteran soldiers dragged a beastkin prisoner over.

This beastkin had secretly slipped out of Blade City to track the main force but had been caught by the veteran soldiers stationed nearby.

"Hmm!" Aiden nodded. This was expected. His eyes lit up when he saw the tall beastkin in armor, then turned to Amelia with a faint smile. "Can you kill him? If you do, consider it the price for eating the wheat porridge."

This was the only way Aiden thought he could make Amelia back down. With such a serious child, if he didn't find a way to make her feel satisfied, she would just keep insisting.

"Okay!" Amelia nodded. She extended her slender left arm, which was wrapped in gray cloth, and slowly began to unwind it with her right hand.

Aiden watched Amelia's movements, scratching his face in confusion. Was she planning to strangle the beastkin with the cloth? But with just the strength of a girl, that was impossible.

Once the cloth was unraveled, Amelia gripped it tightly in her right hand. The cloth hung down to the ground, about a meter long, and it seemed to be concealing something. She stared at the beastkin, her eyes full of mockery.

"You are the twelfth."

Amelia coldly stated a number. Her green eyes narrowed slightly, giving off an air of indifference. Her petite body suddenly moved with surprising speed. In the astonished gazes of the onlookers…

She charged forward, lightly stepping on a nearby tree branch to propel herself upward. Her body shot into the air, and with a flick of her right hand, the cloth twisted into a 'Z' shape. One end of it made a sharp, high-pitched sound and then pierced the beastkin's throat.

"Thud!"

Amelia tugged on the cloth, her foot kicking the beastkin's body as she landed gracefully. However, the moment she touched the ground, she staggered slightly, her breath becoming heavy and quick.

"Bang!"

The beastkin's throat sprayed blood as he collapsed to the ground, his legs twitching in their death throes. A drop of blood splattered onto Amelia's eyelash and slowly slid down, creating a cold and shocking visual impression.
