Picking up the phone and hearing her mother's voice, Jiang Mei covertly glanced towards her brother and sister-in-law sitting at the other end.
"Mom, why didn't you use your own cell phone?" Jiang Mei asked.
"I'm at your uncle's house, so of course I'd use his landline, it saves money," her mother replied.
"Is something the matter?" Jiang Mei got straight to the point, anxious that her brother and his wife would notice.
"Can I not call you if there's nothing wrong? Your father and I have been out and about for so many days, and you never thought to call us to check in," her mother challenged aggressively.
Jiang Mei did not want to argue with her mother, knowing she always had various overwhelming reasons, so she simply said, "But whenever you call, there's always something you want me to do, right, Mom?"
