Chapter 15 - 1

Soma Yumi was running, at night, like her life depended on it, a bolt of something cloying impacting the place she was a moment ago.

Normally, she was a normal schoolgirl: she had slightly long brown hair, brown eyes, fair skin and round face, she wasn't busty like the Two Great Princesses of Kuoh High School but wasn't flat like Koneko in her class either, she wasn't tall or small, and she wasn't aware of the supernatural. So, why was she…

"Heehehehe!" A laugh came out of the slavering maw, filled with palm-sized sharp teeth and leaking saliva, that was dividing the lizard-like monster's body in almost twain. "I love it when my food runs! Makes me nostalgic!"

The girl's breaths came out in gasps, her abdomen cramping from exerting herself so much in such a short time, her vision darkening from hyperventilation, but she couldn't stop running, as she saw what happened to her mother already…

Yes - the situation looked hopeless. And yet…

…answering her desperate wish for salvation, something stirred to live.

Summon a Blue-Eyes White Dragon that will attack the monster hunting the MC.

A roar, different from the monster's wet cackles.

"What the-" was the only thing the Stray Devil managed to say before it was obliterated by a White Lightning Breath.

Not daring to look back, Yumi continued running through the night streets of Kuoh City, hoping to reach safety. The Blue-Eyes White Dragon, left to his own devices, roared again, and took flight, enjoying the night sky.

As the girl reached the lit streets, she ran to the nearest open door, that of a convenience store, and hurried inside.

"Help!!!" she screamed, and hid behind some shelves. "There is a monster after me!"

"C-calm down!" the cashier, an older woman, hurried up to her. "Miss, are you alright? please breathe, one-two-three-exhale…"

Yumi shook, her eyes darting from the entrance to the worker, her hands gripping the shelf painfully, but, as the monster failed to chase after her into the store, relaxed minutely.

"W-where is it?" she muttered, catching her breath. "It was chasing me, I swear!"

"Uh…" the other human looked at her. "I'm sorry to ask, but did you… eat something you shouldn't have?"

"What?" the girl turned to the cashier. "It's true! I just returned home from my friend's house, and saw it eating m-my mom!"

"...I see," the woman nodded. "Should I call the police?"

"Please!" Yumi nodded, sinking to sit on the floor in relief, and the worker went to get her phone.

The schoolgirl did not hear what the cashier said, feeling faint, exhausted and jittery. Still, two officers arrived soon, marching inside the store and immediately started to ask questions.

"So, you were chased by a monster that… ate your mother?" Officer Sato asked, looking through the notes he took, then withdrew his radio. "Okay, so… I'm gonna call it in. Please come with us. We'll dispatch a car to your house if you let us run some tests."

"Huh?" Yumi blinked. "W-wait, do you think I am drunk or something?!"

"Dispatcher, we need a car to the…"

"Who t.h. is this?" a harsh female voice came out of the radio. "How're you on m.p.comm.?"

"Huh?" the old policeman looked at the item questioningly. "Who are you, and why are you on the police wavelength?"

"I should b.a. that!" the woman on the other side shot. "I'm a Liu Association's Section Four's Fixer, no one should be c.thr.ths!"

As the first officer bantered with the increasingly irate woman, the other one came closer to them.

"Sato, what the hell," he huffed. "Just try another channel. It might be a glitch."

"W-what about me?" Yumi nervously asked. "What about my mom?!"

Due to middling roll, it is summoned exactly as described, to one of the shelves.

"..." the second policeman, Keima, glared at his partner, who was futilely trying to get any other channel than the increasingly irate woman. "Let's get to the station, okay? Get you some tea and call your parents."

"My mom was killed by a monster!" Yumi cried.

Yumi is now capable of fighting like the Sagacious Gray Wolf. Because of the middling power roll, she does not get his other powers.

"And.. And Dad is working overseas!"

"Okay, I'm going to call the station - hopefully my radio works - and then we'll have a few policemen check on your mom," the man sighed, then withdrew his communicator. "Dispatcher, this is Officer Keima…"

His radio worked as was intended, and thus Yumi relaxed a bit. The adrenaline left her body, and she felt the pulled muscles and the exhaustion. Looking back at the events of her evening, she wondered if this was all a bad dream and pinched herself…

The other officer's radio now is permanently tuned to SBS.

"...Hey! Monkey D. Luffy! I'm the one who's gonna be the Pirate King! You got a problem with that, Pirate King?!" the radio in Keima's hands suddenly shouted, causing the officer to drop it.

"What the hell," he frowned as the communicator now spewed some sort of talk show. "What is going on with the radios today…? Miss Soma, Sato, let's go back to the station now and tell the story in person."

"Yeah," the first officer nodded, glaring at the device in his hands. "Let's go."

There was another radio in the car, so the officers finally successfully called their station and got some other officers to call the Soma Residence. As the three humans rode through Kuoh City, the dispatcher called back, telling them that there was no answer from the house, so there was a car sent to investigate.

"I told you, she was-"

"Yeah, yeah," the older man, Sato, scoffed. "Maybe there was some freak in cosplay. More likely your mom is just tired and asleep, and you ingested some drugs and got hallucinations."

"No! I am not a-"

-and suddenly they were in the middle of a sunlit road, another car barely managing to stop instead of crashing into them, immediately starting to blare its horn.

"What the fuck?!" Keima exclaimed hitting the brakes, both officers looking around with wild eyes. "What happened?!"

"Is that the fucking sun," Sato gaped at the light coming through the windows.

Yumi wasn't any better, looking around with wild eyes. Did… did they get teleported? And if yes, where to?!

"Stay here," the older officer told her, removing his seatbelt and pulling out his handgun. "I'm going to investigate. Keima, try to contact the station."

And then he opened the car door and got out, the other policeman futilely tapping at the communicator's buttons, only to get static.

In the meanwhile, Yumi looked out of the window, watching at the cars with unfamiliar plates and the signs on the buildings, all in English.

Was this day going to get more bizarre, she wondered despairingly. Maybe she was, indeed, dreaming?

She pinched herself-

"So, you do not know how you happened to get there?" the man from the Japanese Embassy asked.

"Yes," Officer Sato ground his teeth, having been repeating the story of his strange day for the fifth time. "It's like in-between one blink and another we were teleported to another side of the world."

"And you do not know what the attack that destroyed the car you arrived in was?"

"No."

The ambassador sighed, then took off his glasses, starting to clean the dark lenses with a piece of cloth he retrieved from his pocket, before returning them to the place.

"I see, so it was some sort of accident," the man nodded, then withdrew a pen-like device from his front pocket. "I'll return you home, don't worry."

A flash of light - and the officer sat at the table, eyes blank. The ambassador then pulled out a piece of paper, on which a circular pattern lit up.

"Done?" a woman in an expensive suit appeared next to him.

"Yes, he didn't know anything," the man nodded. "You can get him back to Kuoh."

Consciousness returned slowly. First she heard faint beeping, then she felt numbness, then she realized that it was somewhat uncomfortable to breathe, then her eyes opened a crack and immediately closed shut because of the bright light.

Angels, devils, pagan gods - all fought to stall, to give the people a chance to run. The defenders died in droves, most being barely even cannon fodder, and yet there were so many of them that the Beast was slowed a tiny bit.
