Chapter 16 - Gull's Landing

As the ferry docked, with a shared nod of understanding, the two of them made their way along the wharf, past the small fishing boats, bobbing gently in the harbor, its timeworn planks groaning under the weight of their heavy footsteps. The salty sea air filled their lungs as they departed the vessel, their hearts pounding with a mixture of excitement and trepidation.

The village was known as Gull's Landing, looking around, it was a typical fishing village, it bustled with activity as fishermen unloaded their day's catch, nets brimming with shimmering silver fish, while children played in the cobblestone streets, their laughter ringing through the salty sea air. The scent of freshly baked bread wafted from a nearby bakery, mingling with the tangy aroma of the sea.

As Tarquin and Lexi approach Gull's Landing, they can see the village in the distance. The thatched roofs of the huts blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, giving no hint of the bustling community that lies within. The air is filled with the smell of saltwater and fish, and Tarquin can feel his stomach growling with hunger.

As they enter the village, they are greeted with warm smiles and curious glances. The villagers are wary of strangers, but they are also friendly and welcoming. Tarquin and Lexi can sense that there is something special about this place, something that sets it apart from other villages on the island.

As they make their way through the village, they come across a group of villagers gathered around a large wooden table. The villagers are busy preparing for a feast, laughing and chatting as they work. Tarquin can feel his stomach growling with hunger as he takes in the sight of all the delicious food being prepared.

"Ah, welcome to Gull's Landing!" says one of the villagers, a burly man with a bushy beard. "We haven't had a lot of visitors from the mainland. We've got a feast prepared for you tonight, if you're willing to share your stories."

Tarquin and Lexi exchange a look, unsure of what to say. But as they looked around at the warm and welcoming faces of the villagers, they knew that they had made a good choice in coming to Gull's Landing.

Lexi led her companion along the weathered wooden dock, their footsteps echoing against the aged planks as they made their way towards the heart of the village. The villagers glanced up from their tasks, casting curious glances at the newcomers, their faces weathered by years spent under the harsh sun and salty sea spray. It was still early in the evening so the village was very much alive with activity.

Among the villagers, they saw a weathered old fisherman mending his nets, his eyes crinkled with years of laughter lines, a jovial smile gracing his weather-beaten face. A group of children played a game of tag in the village square, their giggles echoing through the narrow alleys lined with colorful houses adorned with blooming window boxes.

As Tarquin and Lexi wandered through the winding streets, they stumbled upon a quaint inn nestled at the edge of the village, its cozy façade illuminated by flickering lanterns that danced in the evening breeze. A wooden sign above the door creaked in the wind, bearing the name "The Mermaid's Rest" in faded gold lettering.

Intrigued, they pushed open the heavy oak door and stepped inside the warm embrace of the inn. The interior was bathed in a soft, golden light cast by crackling hearth fires, the walls adorned with nautical trinkets and seafaring memorabilia that hinted at a rich history of maritime tales.

A portly innkeeper with a bushy beard and twinkling eyes stood behind the worn wooden counter, polishing a set of tankards with a practiced hand. His face broke into a warm smile as they entered, a twinkle of curiosity gleaming in his eyes.

"Welcome, weary travelers," the innkeeper boomed, his voice hearty and inviting. "What brings you to our humble village on such a fine evening?"

Tarquin stepped forward, his gaze meeting the innkeepers with a sense of determination. "We seek shelter for the night, good sir. We have come from afar in our quest and we plan to travel deep within the jungles of Arkania."

The innkeeper's eyebrows shot up in surprise, a glint of curiosity flickering in his gaze. "Ah, a noble quest, indeed. You've come to the right place. The jungle of Arkania is a treacherous place, filled with danger and mystery. You'll find no shortage of tales to be told in these parts."

With a nod of gratitude, Tarquin turned toward Lexi, a sense of determination burning in his eyes. They knew that their journey had only just begun, and that the road ahead would be fraught with peril and uncertainty. But with the warmth of the inn's hearth at their backs and the camaraderie of newfound friends by their side, they felt a flicker of hope kindling within their hearts, a beacon of light in the encroaching darkness that awaited them in the jungle of Arkania.

Sitting at the large wooden table they enjoyed a hearty mean and a few mugs of ale. The Bard eventually made his way to their table and offered a poem. He asked them their names and then pondered for a moment. He then began to recite his poem:

In ages past, the brave Bard would sing, Of heroes and their valiant deeds, With sword in hand, they fought and won, Against evil forces, they would succeed.

Through valleys deep and mountains high, They sought out magic, pure and true, To vanquish dragons with fiery breath, And protect the realms that they knew.

But in the shadows, danger lay, As Tarquin and Lexi, Stood tall against the darkest night, Their courage never did they quell.

With hearts so pure and spirits strong, They fought for truth and what is right, Their legacy will forever live on, In the songs the Bard will recite.

The two laughed and congratulated him on such a fine poem. Tarquin tossed him a silver coin to show their appreciation. With a bow and a thank you, he moved on to another table.

Morning would come early so the two of them decided it was time to head off to their rooms for a rest.
