Chapter 162 - Chapter 159 - The Growing Doubt.

Herbert Medical And Technology

Blaze sat in his office, fingers tapping rhythmically on the smooth wooden surface of his desk. His jaw was set, replaying the conversation he had with Savannah earlier that day.

Something felt off.

Savannah was a dedicated doctor—he had always respected that about her. But why hadn't the hospital given him a heads-up?

This wasn't about control; it was about following the right procedures.

His wife, Dr. Savannah, was one of the top surgeons at the hospital, and not just anyone could be sent on an emergency volunteer mission. Typically, the hospital would notify him—not just because he was her husband, but because he owned the place.

He reached for his phone, letting out a sharp breath before dialing the hospital's administration line.

It rang twice before someone picked up.

"Good morning, Mr. Baldwin."

Blaze leaned back in his chair, keeping his voice steady yet assertive. "I need to know about Dr. Savannah's upcoming volunteer work. Why wasn't I informed?"

There was a brief silence on the other end before the man replied. "Sir, we received an emergency request from one of our partner hospitals in California. They're facing a medical crisis and urgently needed experienced surgeons. Dr. Savannah volunteered."

Blaze's fingers tightened around his phone. "And no one thought it was important to let me know?"

The administrator cleared his throat, looking a bit uncomfortable. "It was a last-minute decision, Mr. Baldwin. Dr. Savannah was fully prepared for it, and since she personally agreed, we went ahead with the necessary arrangements."

Blaze felt his jaw tighten, but he made an effort to stay calm.

Savannah had made this choice.

She hadn't given him a heads-up, but that didn't mean she needed his approval. She was her own person—strong and independent. That was one of the many reasons he loved her.

And if this was what she wanted, he wouldn't question it.

"Understood," he finally replied, his voice flat. "Send me the details of her trip."

"Of course, Mr. Baldwin. I'll send everything to your office right away."

After ending the call, Blaze set his phone down, his mind still racing.

Something about this didn't sit right with him.

Savannah had always been passionate about her work, but this sudden urgency... the way she had clung to him a bit longer than usual last night, the look in her eyes that felt like hesitation—it all played in his mind like a puzzle waiting to be solved.

But he wouldn't push her.

If she wanted to go, she could.

She had every right to chase after whatever dreams she had.

He would never get in her way.

So, Blaze shook off his worries and got back to work, though the unease lingered.

The Days Leading to Departure

Baldwin's Mansion

The days flew by, and Savannah kept herself busy with the final touches for her trip.

Blaze observed her closely—not out of suspicion, but from a place of quiet concern.

She moved with intention and determination, yet there were moments when he noticed her staring off into the distance, her face a mystery.

She had packed her bags with great care. Each night, before settling down, she would double-check everything, as if preparing for something much bigger than just a medical mission.

And every night, when she nestled into his arms, he held her a little tighter.

As if that could somehow keep her from drifting away.

On the night before her departure, Blaze leaned against the doorway of their bedroom, watching her as she neatly folded the last of her clothes into her suitcase.

"All set?" he asked, his voice calm.

Savannah turned to him with a faint smile, though it didn't quite reach her eyes.

"Yeah," she replied, nodding. "Just making sure I don't forget anything important."

Blaze walked towards her, his hands finding their way around her waist as he pulled her into a warm embrace.

"You sure about this?" he whispered, his lips brushing against her forehead.

Savannah took a deep breath, wrapping her arms around him. "I have to do this, Blaze."

He didn't press for details.

He simply nodded, trusting her completely, despite everything.

What he didn't realize was that Savannah wasn't just heading out for some volunteer work.

She was on a mission to uncover the truth.

And that truth had the power to change everything.

Savannah's Journey to California

California

As Savannah stepped off the plane, she took a deep breath, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the California airport.

The reality of her trip hit her—this wasn't merely a volunteer mission; it was the start of confronting a truth she had been dodging for far too long.

The ride to the hotel was filled with silence. She sat by the window, watching the city whiz by, her mind racing with thoughts.

Once she checked into her hotel room, her phone buzzed in her pocket.

Blaze.

A small, weary smile crept onto her face as she swiped to answer the video call. His familiar face lit up the screen—strong jawline, deep dark eyes, and that unmistakable look of love that always warmed her heart.

"Hey, beautiful." His voice wrapped around her like a warm blanket.

"Hey!" she replied softly, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

"Did you make it in okay?" He asked, his gaze searching her face as if he could read her thoughts.

Savannah nodded. "Yeah, just checked into the hotel. It's lovely, and the city is stunning."

Blaze flashed a smirk. "Not as stunning as you."

Savannah laughed, shaking her head. "Nice try, Mr. Baldwin, but flattery won't get you anywhere."

"It's not flattery, just the truth." His tone was playful, but there was a flicker of concern in his eyes. "You sure you're alright?"

She hesitated for a moment before giving him a reassuring nod. "I am, Blaze. Just a long day ahead. I need to get ready for my hospital visit."

He let out a dramatic sigh. "I don't like this, Ana. I already miss you."

"I miss you too," she whispered, feeling a tightness in her chest.

They chatted a bit longer about little things, silly things. It was their routine, a way to keep their connection alive despite the distance.

Finally, Blaze leaned in closer to the screen. "Make sure to get some rest when you're back, okay? And call me before you hit the hay."

"I will. I promise."

After hanging up, Savannah let out a deep breath, staring at the dark screen of her phone.

She longed to cling to this moment for eternity—this chapter of her life where everything felt cozy, familiar, and secure.

But now, she had to confront what lay ahead.
