Chapter 14 - A hunch

Ophelia, thoughtful about the restaurant fight, it was just a drunken fight, so the officer described it, but something did not leave her alone, the grinding of the wheels invaded her thoughts, the feeling of restlessness followed her, no matter how far they would go from that place, no matter if they turned left or right, and no matter how hard she would try, Ophelia could not think clearly, something inside her warned her about the restaurant.

"Stop!" Ophelia suddenly shouted.

"What's wrong?" the frightened driver replied.

"I don't know" Ophelia said with her face wrapped in surprise "but... something doesn't leave me calm, that restaurant in ruins, somehow it gives me a familiar feeling" and she was silent for a moment while she bowed her head "And I have to find out what it is, that feeling, I feel that I get disoriented, the farther I get from there" She said in a firm voice, while raising her head.

"Okay, I guess we say goodbye here, I must continue with my work, good luck, miss magician" said the driver with a smile.

"Thank you very much for your help," Ophelia said as she replied with a smile.

Even with her hands on the wagon, Ophelia felt as she resumed her step, and forced her to let go of the railing she was holding, letting it go. She took a few steps back until she reached the sidewalk, and turned in the opposite direction of the wagon, determined to silence her anguish.

A faint smell of burnt pine and cedar perfumed the atmosphere near the ruins of the restaurant, producing joy in those who were there, after the tragedy, which made the work of the policeman in charge of monitoring the area heavier, because people constantly approached with the intention of obtaining, even if it was, a small moment of enjoyment in the midst of all the chaos that is living in the city, in addition to running to prying eyes, which some even asked the policeman for details, which of course he did not give to anyone outside the police.

Ophelia arrived at the place after asking for instructions, from the inhabitants of the place, she was so focused on herself, that she did not pay attention to the road, and when she got out of the wagon excited, her feelings of confidence and anguish mixed, obscuring the reality of her situation, and she only regained clarity when she realized that she did not know where in the city she was.

Once in front of the ruins of the restaurant, the sweet and fresh aroma encircles it instantly. Ophelia closed her eyes for a moment and let herself be carried away for a moment by that sensation, she concentrated on her breathing and feeling how that soft aroma that caressed her nose, a concentration technique that she learned in her student years, she felt that in this way she put a funnel to all that stream of thoughts that came to her constantly. Slowly serenity returned, however, someone took her out of her affair with herself.

"Listen here again!" said the policeman in an annoyed tone. "What is your name?" Ophelia, my name is Ophelia, and I am a witch, a witch specialized in flora "You are the witch the academy promised us to help in the case." "If it's me" nervous answer. "And why didn't she get out of the carriage when we first met?" the officer questioned her "Because I wasn't sure it was here, but..." she paused to adopt a straight posture and raise her tone of voice, "but after confirming it, I returned." "Can I see your official witch ID?" "No problem" Ophelia took her ID out of her pocket and gave it to the officer, as she walked towards the rubble.

Ophelia, only let herself be carried away, lied to be able to access the ruins of the restaurant, but the truth is that as a recent graduate and a small town girl she did not know what the dynamics between policemen and sorcerers were like, well, she was locked in the laboratory all the time, and from the laboratory she went home with her parents, and repeated the routine until the day she fled.

He prayed inside that the officer would not notice his farce, at least until he could find something that would be useful.

Ophelia bent down to better examine the debris, while the officer followed her closely, his gaze still fixed on the identification.

"Could you tell me what happened here?" Ophelia asked with a serious tone.

"A drunken fight" the officer replied "but... this time it was different, the fight was really disastrous, this place, usually has parties with meat and beer, every two months, as a ritual to attract prosperity, it is not uncommon to find fights in the middle of the parties, they are usually street fights, one or two people drunk and angry, but, it is the first time that a fight involves everyone in the bar, and predictably ended in total disaster, all injured, most required medical attention and the others who did not, we will have them detained until we find out exactly what happened. But when we asked, no one remembered exactly what happened that night. They all say the same thing, they were eating and drinking peacefully, when suddenly the conflict broke out in such a way that I reached everyone in the bar." "If these parties are traditional, then you have to find out, what was it that changed, perhaps during the arrangements for the party" Ophelia replied

While contemplating the disaster, Ophelia turned to see the officer, to recover her identification, and his back could see another sorcerer walking in the distance, who was heading towards where they were.

"I already know what happened here" said Ophelia confidently "Seriously" the officer replied skeptically, "and what happened?" "I'll tell you, but first I need to confirm my hypothesis" said Ophelia, "will you accompany me, or will you stay there?" "But I have orders to monitor the area" the officer replied "If I solve the case alone, I will not share the credit, and you will not remain an ordinary officer for several more years, will you miss your chance?"

The officer was thoughtful for a moment, before accepting his offer with a nod. And instantly being dragged by the arm by Ophelia through a few streets, at a very hurried pace, until Ophelia put enough distance between them and the wizard, did not let go of the officer, while they ran in the opposite direction, now independent of each other, they did not know where they were going, Ophelia just ran aimlessly, and the officer followed her without hesitation, but that was the least of it, the witch already had a local to guide her through the city, so the most important thing for her right now was to stay safe and out of the radar of the authorities.
