Cherreads

Chapter 182 - Chapter 181: Mad Doctor

Ryu and Nono Yakushi were immersed in their laboratory, working tirelessly on their latest project codenamed 'The Red Dye'. It was otherwise known as Prontosil red, a precursor to isoniazid.

They carefully observed the effect of the drug on a petri dish, noting the significant reduction in bacterial growth. The results were promising, a beacon of hope in the fight against tuberculosis.

Ryu and Nono Yakushi worked on this red dye used in the colour industry that was used to colour the cloths red. Nono was sceptical about how he got the hint for testing the dye for anti-TB properties, but she did not ask him.

They tested it on a petri dish and noted the effects of bacteria multiplication. It was sufficiently reduced.

Nono's eyes sparkled with excitement. "It's a breakthrough! We're one step closer to wiping out these diseases!"

Ryu, however, tempered her excitement with caution. "I doubt it."

Nono's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "Why?" she asked.

Ryu replied, "Diseases evolve over time, developing resistance to current treatments. We must continuously research new drugs to stay ahead."

Nono nodded in agreement, her expression thoughtful. "You're right. With this research paper, the medical council might not need another one. This research paper attempts to introduce a new treatment option that will revolutionise the way that tuberculosis is treated.

She paused, then shifted the conversation with a curious tilt of her head, "I heard Lady Tsunade offered you the opportunity to be her apprentice."

Ryu asked, "How did you know?"

Nono replied, "Isao mentioned it to me. Why did you refuse her tutelage?"

Ryu sighed softly and replied, "Aunt Tsunade is never in the village. If I accepted her offer, I'd have to leave with her. I can't abandon my grandfather; he depends on me, and my work here is crucial."

Nono raised an eyebrow. "Aunt Tsunade? Lady Tsunade is your aunt?"

Ryu explained, "Her late fiance was a distant uncle of mine, which is why she asked me to call her Aunt Tsunade, and I obliged."

Nono seemed intrigued by the familial connection, but Ryu moved on. "We should proceed to animal testing."

They initiated the testing phase by administering the drug to healthy mice, meticulously monitoring for any potential side effects. Following a full day of administering various dosages, they reached the reassuring conclusion that no immediate adverse effects were observed.

The next step was infecting a group of animals with tuberculosis bacteria first and then testing the new drug the next day to assess the drug's effects.

With the day's work completed, Ryu headed to his company, Hamura Industry, where he had a series of innovations to share with his team.

In a meeting room adorned with technical diagrams, Ryu presented an ultrasound machine to the research team, guiding them through its functionality.

Following the demonstration, Ryu's brilliant innovation was applauded by the entire floor.

After that, Ryu told them, "I want a production-ready prototype prepared. It shouldn't be too challenging for your team."

"I apologise for not meeting your expectations, Director Ryu," said lead researcher Masato Nakai.

Ryu reassured him with a warm smile and said, "You don't need to apologise, Mr. Masato. We're a team, not just an owner and employees. We'll work out every problem we face together, one by one."

He addressed the first challenge: the display screen. "A compact communication device, which I'll call a mobile device, can't have a bulky cathode ray tube. I've been working on a liquid crystal display."

He explained the workings of an LCD and unveiled a smaller, working prototype he had developed. The team erupted in cheers and congratulations, inspired by the innovation.

After explaining and showing that it actually works, Ryu presented everyone there with a complete set of documents and plans required to make a liquid crystal display and ultrasound machine.

Ryu outlined the future applications of the technology. "We'll create bigger, flatter television sets with this technology, replacing outdated models."

After explaining and showing that it actually works, Ryu presented everyone there with a complete set of documents and plans required to make a liquid crystal display and ultrasound machine.

He then asked about the production of solar paint and sodium batteries. One of the staff members spoke up, "The production is going fine, but we don't have the capability for larger production in the village unit. We've registered the patent with the Fire Capital."

Ryu nodded thoughtfully, his mind already racing ahead. "Good. Let's produce and stock both devices in all our plants in the Fire Nation. Ensure the quality of products before the launch. All non-research personnel will focus solely on these two products, while the research team concentrates on the ultrasound machine and LCD."

He also updated the team on Ikkyu Madoka's request, his tone filled with excitement. "Ikkyu, the son of the Fire Daimyo, has commissioned solar paint and sodium battery setups for his home. Prepare the best team we have and coordinate with his secretary via messenger bird."

The team congratulated him on securing his first high-profile order, their voices filled with enthusiasm. "This is going to be a big deal for the company," one of them said. "We'll get huge publicity and backing from the highest power in the nation at once."

Ryu added with a smile, "I'm also in talks with Ikkyu to set up a big factory soon." The room erupted in cheers once more, the air thick with excitement and anticipation.

Masato Nakai turned to the employees, a sheepish grin on his face. "I already knew about the factory talks, but I couldn't tell anyone."

One employee said, "You did not tell us; that is not fair."

Masato replied, "It wasn't my place to share such information."

Ryu said, "Ikkyu has a few places in mind and will contact him after initial talks on his end."

The meeting concluded with each person assigned a specific task.

The meeting concluded with everyone having a clear task ahead of them. Ryu turned to the research team with a final instruction. "I expect that the team will have prepared a prototype GameBoy device with a micro LED display before the next meeting."

The research team assured him they would work day and night to make it happen, their determination evident. Ryu added with a gentle smile, "Take it easy. Deadlines are important, but they shouldn't compromise your well-being. Keep your health and comfort in check."

He concluded with a promise, "Upon successful completion of the ultrasound machine, LCD, and Game Boy projects, I'll guarantee a well-deserved paid vacation for the research team and a bonus for our non-research colleagues."

He also shared his vision for the future, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "I have a few games in mind and will demonstrate them when the prototype is ready. Also, please hire a few programmers to code future games."

The employees thanked Ryu for his hard work, their voices filled with gratitude. "We'll meet your expectations, Director Ryu."

After his meeting at Hamura Industry, Ryu headed straight to Tsunade Inn, though he arrived slightly late. Tsunade greeted him with a playful scold, "You're late!"

Ryu explained, "I was at the hospital, working on my research paper, and then I had a briefing at my company."

Tsunade's curiosity was piqued, and she asked, "What is it that you're working on in your research paper?"

Ryu elaborated on his work with anti-TB drugs, his passion for the subject evident in his voice. He explained about the red dye they are testing for anti-TB properties.

Tsunade asked, "But how did you come to the conclusion that this dye can be used as an anti-TB drug?"

Ryu came prepared, having anticipated her question.; he knew he would be asked how he got the idea. "I obtained the data of all the TB patients in the Fire Country from the records of Leaf Central Hospital. I listed all their professions and working environments. Luckily, the data was available and was handed to me very easly. I found out that workers of a specific dye factory were never included in the data. And just as I had guessed, the in-vitro tests were successful."

Ryu continued his explanation, stating, "Connecting the dots wasn't easy, but upon testing the dye, I discovered a natural compound within it that inhibits the growth of TB."

Tsuande said, "You mean it worked? That is some way of looking at the problem. Either you are very lucky or a mad doctor."

Ryu laughed and replied, "Maybe both. You brought me here to discuss my projects or to train me?"

Tsunade asked, "Send me a copy of the research paper when you are finished with it."

Tsunade was at heart a medical professional; she too was curious about his work. Ryu understood that and replied, "I can do you one better. I am doing animal testing the day after tomorrow. You can join us."

Tsunade then declared, "Okay, I will join you in your research. Let's begin your training now."
