Chapter 42 - Chapter 37: The Ritual Begins

The night sky was clear, the stars twinkling like scattered diamonds against the velvet darkness. The moon hung low, casting an ethereal glow over the palace grounds. Rick stood on a secluded balcony, the ornate wooden box cradled in his hands. The box pulsed with a soft, eerie light, its presence both a comfort and a warning of the power it contained.

Selene's words echoed in his mind: "When the moon is high, and the veil between worlds is thinnest." He could feel the energy in the air, a subtle but undeniable shift that signaled the time had come.

Rick was no stranger to rituals. In his previous life, he had encountered many forms of magic—some light, others dark. But this was different. The stakes were higher, and the consequences of failure could be catastrophic. Yet, he couldn't afford to hesitate. He needed the knowledge Selene promised, and this was the only way to obtain it.

As the hour approached, Selene appeared, stepping out of the shadows with her usual grace. She was dressed in dark robes that seemed to absorb the light around her, her face partially obscured by the hood. Despite the secrecy and danger of the situation, her expression was calm, almost serene.

"Are you ready, Your Highness?" she asked, her voice soft but carrying an undertone of urgency.

Rick nodded, though his heart raced with a mix of anticipation and fear. "What exactly will this ritual do?"

Selene moved closer, her eyes locking onto his. "The ritual will reunite the fragment of my soul with the rest of it, restoring my full power. In doing so, it will also reveal the truths hidden from you—about the Order of the Veil, the Duke's plans, and the greater forces at work in this kingdom."

"And what do I need to do?" Rick asked, his voice steady despite the tension in the air.

Selene reached out, her fingers brushing against the box in Rick's hands. "You must open the box and place the fragment within the circle I will draw. The rest... will happen naturally."

Rick's grip tightened on the box. "And what about me? What will happen to me during the ritual?"

Selene's gaze softened, but there was a seriousness to her tone that made Rick's breath catch. "The ritual will draw on your strength, Your Highness. It will test your resolve and your connection to the ???System. But you are stronger than you know, and with my guidance, you will emerge from this even more powerful."

Rick swallowed hard, nodding. He had come this far, and he couldn't turn back now. "Let's begin."

Selene nodded, stepping back to create space on the balcony. With a swift motion, she drew a circle on the ground, using a fine white powder that glowed faintly in the moonlight. The symbols she traced within the circle were unfamiliar to Rick, but they resonated with an ancient energy that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.

"Place the box in the center," Selene instructed, her voice now a low chant.

Rick moved carefully, stepping into the circle and setting the box down in the exact center. As soon as it touched the ground, the symbols around it began to glow brighter, pulsing in time with the light emanating from the box itself.

"Now, open it," Selene whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of energy that had begun to fill the air.

Rick hesitated for a split second, then reached out and lifted the lid of the box. The moment it opened, a rush of cold air escaped, and the glow intensified, casting long shadows across the balcony. Inside the box lay a small, shimmering orb of light—pale and fragile, yet containing a depth of power that made Rick's heart race.

The orb seemed to pulse in time with his own heartbeat, as if it was alive, aware of its surroundings. Without thinking, Rick reached out and gently lifted the orb from the box, feeling a surge of energy as it made contact with his skin.

"Place it in the center," Selene instructed, her tone urgent now.

Rick complied, setting the orb in the middle of the glowing symbols. The moment it touched the ground, the entire circle flared with light, and a shockwave of energy rippled outward, nearly knocking Rick off his feet.

Selene began to chant, her voice rising and falling in a rhythm that matched the pulse of the energy around them. The symbols on the ground twisted and shifted, forming new patterns as the ritual progressed. The air grew thick with power, and Rick could feel the ???System within him reacting, surging with a force he hadn't felt since his reincarnation.

His vision blurred, and for a moment, he saw flashes of images—ancient battles, darkened forests, shadowy figures moving in the distance. The visions came faster, more intense, each one more vivid than the last. He saw the Duke's face, twisted in anger and fear; the King, slumped on his throne, his eyes hollow; and finally, the Order of the Veil, their faces obscured by darkness, their hands reaching out toward him.

Rick gasped as the visions overwhelmed him, but he held on, refusing to let go of his focus. He knew that this was a test, that the ???System was pushing him to his limits. He had to stay strong, had to see this through to the end.

As the ritual reached its climax, the orb of light began to change. It grew brighter, more intense, until it was almost blinding. The symbols on the ground shifted again, forming a final, intricate pattern that locked into place with a resounding crack.

Then, everything went still.

The light from the orb dimmed, and the energy in the air dissipated, leaving behind a heavy silence. Rick swayed on his feet, the strain of the ritual catching up to him. But he remained standing, his gaze fixed on the orb as it settled into the center of the circle.

Selene stepped forward, her eyes glowing with a mixture of triumph and relief. "It is done," she said softly, her voice carrying an undercurrent of power that hadn't been there before.

Rick let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. "What now?"

Selene knelt beside the orb, her hand hovering over it. "Now, I will fulfill my end of the bargain. The knowledge you seek will be revealed to you—but be warned, Your Highness. Some truths are not easy to bear."

Rick nodded, bracing himself for what was to come. He had faced many challenges in his life—both in his previous one and in this new world—but he had a feeling that what he was about to learn would change everything.

Selene closed her eyes, her hand making contact with the orb. The moment she touched it, the orb shattered, releasing a burst of energy that flooded the circle and surged into Rick's mind.

His vision went white, and the world around him dissolved.
