"This is nice," Julia says, her voice echoing gently off the polished walls as she walks through the front hallway, her fingertips brushing the wood paneling like she's trying to memorize the texture.
She's here to visit with her husband and two children, and honestly, I'm glad to see her. It's been years. Too many, really.
"Thank you," I say, my voice laced with a quiet pride I don't bother hiding. I was hands-on in the construction of this house. Every brick, beam, and corner—Brian and I built this together. Every decision, every stone—it's ours. A seven-bedroom house carved out of time and effort and something that finally feels like home.
Julia turns in a slow circle, taking in the tall ceilings, the sun filtering through the wide arched windows, the soft hum of the sea breeze that always seems to find its way inside.
"Is it not too big?" she asks, her head tilting slightly, curious but not judgmental.
"It's perfect," I say without hesitation.
