Chapter 130 - THE RETREAT

I woke to the muted rustle of trees outside the window and the soft hum of a heater kicking on. Early sunlight slipped through the thin curtain panels, streaking the room in pale gold. I didn't move for a second—just lay still, eyes open, letting the quiet press against my skin like a warning.

Mark was still asleep beside me. On his back, one arm folded over his chest, the other just inches from mine, close but not quite touching.

There'd been no goodnight. No kiss. No more words. But I was still here. And so was he.

I pushed the covers back gently and stood. Moving carefully, I stepped around the bed and headed toward the bathroom, keeping every motion quiet as if sound might crack the fragile stillness between us.

Hot water, light makeup, neutral-toned blouse, dark slacks. Hair half-up, nothing too polished, nothing too loose. I stared at my reflection and practiced the smile I'd need to wear through the day.

One that said: poised, capable, unbothered.
