Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

The first snowflakes of winter danced outside my window, swirling into drifts that softened the harsh lines of Northenglades. I sat at my vanity, the chill seeping through the thick stone walls despite the roaring fire in the hearth. My breath fogged the mirror as I scribbled in my journal, the flickering candlelight casting long, dancing shadows that mimicked my restless thoughts.

Being Queen felt…suffocating sometimes. With my parents away on some extended 'diplomatic mission' (a vacation in disguise, I suspected), the Winter Carnival and Grand Ball rested solely on my shoulders. The weight of it all pressed down on me, a heavy cloak of responsibility.

But then there was him.

For weeks, a mysterious presence had woven itself into my life, a shadow lending support in the most unexpected ways. He knew my anxieties, my secret longings, whispering encouragement when I felt like I was drowning in royal duties. He even helped me plan the Winter Carnival – a collaboration as intimate as it was baffling. I didn't know who he was, but his playful suggestions and unwavering support were a lifeline.

Then came the gift.

One frosty evening in December, I returned to my chambers to find a package waiting for me. A deep red bag, embossed with golden roses, sat perched on my vanity. A note, penned in the elegant script I'd come to recognize, simply read: "Early Christmas gift; figure you could use it with all the stress going on." It was signed with a flourish – his signature.

My heart warmed. The past few weeks had been hellish. Endless meetings, choosing decorations, settling disputes between the guilds… I was drowning. But this…this was a breath of fresh air.

Inside the bag, nestled in silk paper, was a sleek phone. Its white case was adorned with the same golden roses as the bag. It was beautiful, and a swell of appreciation bloomed in my chest. Before I could even turn it on, my fingers brushed against something softer. I pulled out a plush snow cat, its whimsical eyes looking up at me with an almost knowing glint.

A gasp escaped my lips. He knew. He knew I needed the connectivity of the phone, the reassurance of a familiar voice. But he also knew I craved the comfort and innocence of a simple, cuddly toy.

As I cradled the plush, the phone vibrated. A message from him:

Shadow: I hope you enjoyed your gifts, little flame. There is more to come very soon.

My cheeks heated. Little flame. I couldn't hide the foolish grin that stretched across my face. I found myself texting him back, the exhilaration I felt was something I hadn't experienced in ages. This connection, this mystery…it was intoxicating.

I was just tucking the snow cat onto my bed when a knock echoed through my chambers. Startled, I practically jumped. I smoothed my dress and went to the door, and a wave of pure joy washed over me.

Kristy, Harley, and Ginny stood there, radiant smiles lighting up their faces. My friends.

"We missed you!" Ginny exclaimed, pulling me into a hug. "We heard whispers of your carnival plans and couldn't resist coming to help."

"Absolutely!" Harley added, nudging me playfully. "We demand royal treat time! You need all the help you can get with your parents off on their frivolous vacation – you can't do this all alone!"

I laughed, relief flooding through me. "Come in, come in! I was starting to think I'd go crazy trying to coordinate everything."

We settled into my sitting room, the familiar camaraderie instantly easing the tension knotted in my shoulders. As I poured spiced cider (a Northenglades winter tradition) and we began brainstorming ideas, I kept stealing glances at my new phone.

Another message.

Shadow: Enjoy your other gift ❤️

A blush crept across my cheeks again, and I prayed they wouldn't notice. But Kristy, sharp as ever, grinned slyly. "Someone's got a secret admirer!"

"What? No, it's not…" I stammered, my heart pounding against my ribs.

"Relax," Ginny teased, a knowing glint in her eyes. "It's sweet, really. You do need someone to brighten your days."

We dove back into carnival arrangements, discussing decorations, entertainment, and the all-important menu for the Grand Ball. But even as I contributed to the conversation, the warmth of his presence wrapped around me, mingling with the cheerful atmosphere created by my friends' laughter and enthusiasm.

But what would they think of him if they knew who he was? If he ever revealed himself?

Torrance.

My stalker, my protector, my shadow.

He was everything I shouldn't want. Everything my kingdom would disapprove of. With his possessive nature, his dark reputation for dismantling the city's underground, and the way his piercing blue eyes seemed to see right through me, he was danger personified. Yet, I found myself drawn to him, to the intensity that simmered beneath his controlled exterior.

He was toxic, I was a queen.

That night, as my friends finally departed, promising to return the next day for more carnival planning, I sank into my plush armchair. Despite the formidable tasks ahead, a sense of joy had taken root in my heart – a mixture of friendship, the thrill of the unknown, and the promise of more surprises from my playful shadow.

The winter festivities might just be the most memorable yet, not only for the grand celebrations but for the tender, forbidden connection that was slowly blossoming amidst the flurry of snow and kindness…and danger. I just hoped I wouldn't get burned by my little flame.
