Chapter 22 - Azuma Phenex

"Thank you," Azuma nodded sagely.

The long list of notifications continued downward as Azuma stared at the huge crowd of goblins in front of him. He was standing on a large stone stage, holding a microphone as a group of thousands filled the room in front of him.

"Thank you," Azuma repeated, his words reverberating through the speakers positioned around the room.

"Azuma! What are you-" Aphrodite paused as she flew into the room, stopping as she stared at the huge room full of goblins.

"A… Azuma…" She slowly floated up to Azuma, pointing down at the crowd of ugly creatures with stars in her eyes, "You… you created paradise! You created paradise for my birthday!"

"It's your birthday?" Azuma asked blankly, looking at her with a raised eyebrow.

"Well, I don't have a birthday because I'm a goddess, so it can be whenever we want it to be!" Aphrodite cheered. She landed on the stage, running forward and leaping off it to dive into the crowd, "This is the perfect day to be my birthday! Catch meee-ARH!"

She promptly slammed into the ground as none of the goblins caught her, mostly because they were goblins and didn't know what crowd surfing was.

"I didn't do this for your birthday," Azuma deadpanned as the goddess flew back to him while rubbing her bruised ass, "I'm farming CHA."

"Huh?" Aphrodite stared at him blankly, "How are the goblins helping you do that?"

"Because I just have to give a genuine compliment to gain progress," Azuma explained easily, turning back to the crowd, "I'm genuinely thankful that these little gobbys are stupid enough to stand here all day and farm CHA for me, so I'm being genuine. Thank you, little gobbys."

His progress shot up again, and the goblins let out a cheer as they were too dumb to understand he was insulting them.

"W-What?! You're exploiting these poor goblins!" Aphrodite huffed, turning to the crowd, "Hey! You guys can leave! Go be free, my goblins!"

"If you leave, you won't get a juice box," Azuma followed up, and none of the goblins moved. The payment for them standing in the crowd for nearly ten hours today was that they'd each get a juice box at the end.

"Damn, that is a good reward…" Aphrodite sighed, turning to look at Azuma, "If I stay can I get a juice box too?"

As much as I'd like to exploit her stupidity…

"Just go ask Ravel for a juice box," Azuma waved his hand at her, and her face lit up, "She bought a ton the other day."

"Yay! I can really have one?!" Aphrodite looked at him excitedly.

"Yes," Azuma answered with a nod, "You're a part of my harem now, so stop asking me for stuff like you're just a unit. I lo… l… lo… lov… l…"

Azuma frowned as he couldn't finish the word.

"I c… ca… car- I car- I… car-"

"You want a car?" Aphrodite tilted her head at him cutely as he couldn't finish the word 'care.'

"I…"

In the end, Azuma's assholery won over, and he couldn't genuinely be loving to the goddess.

"I enjoy fucking you a lot."

"Oh! Thanks, me too!"

Luckily, Aphrodite was too airheaded to even know what he was trying to say.

—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"And then I said, 'Caviar? I'd rather deviar!' HOHOHOHO!"

"Ha! Deviar! Brilliant! HOHOHOHO!"

I totally get what that meant.

Azuma did his best to keep a smile on his face as Lord Phenex did what could only be considered a trillion-dollar laugh.

I think just his laugh could buy the whole resort. Hell, it could probably buy me.

Azuma tried to mimic the laugh, but he hadn't gotten it quite down yet, even after numerous meetings with the man. Instead of the long dining room table that Azuma had first met with Lord Phenex at, they were instead sitting comfortably on a long couch. In front of them sat a large television, which was showcasing a man golfing on it.

"Ah, an indubitable joke as always, Renegal!" A female voice spoke from the other side of Azuma, which belonged to the other occupant in the room.

Is that even a real word? Do devils have their own dictionary?

Sitting on Azuma's other side was Lady Phenex - who looked damn near identical to Ravel. It was as if someone had put Ravel in a time machine and aged her up a decade.

She had drill-like blonde hair that was the same as Ravel's, expect it was longer. Her face was beautiful and thin, though it had a more mature look to it than Ravel's. Even her body was the same, as the woman had a curvy body, large breasts, a thin waist, and a thick behind - all of which was just a bit better overall than what Ravel had.

Even her dress is the same!

Lady Phenex was dressed in a long pink dress that looked eerily similar to one Azuma had seen Ravel wearing before, though there was a rather thick corset pressing into her waist that dated it. Even her dress was just an older version of Ravel's.

I guess she really takes after her mom.

"Ah! Have you told Layla about how you found Better Riser, my boy?" Lord Phenex, or Renegal as Azuma called him now, asked. The 'Better Riser' in question was Azuma's phoenix, who was sitting on Lady Phenex's, also known as Layla, lap as she stroked his flaming feathers. Azuma had renamed him upon learning it was a boy and had carelessly called him by his name in front of Renegal. Luckily, the man thought the name was funny rather than offensive.

Infiltrating this family was easier than I thought.

The 'my boy' moniker that Renegal called Azuma now was a showcase of how close he had become to both Lord Phenex and Lady Phenex, as both of their reputations with him had risen even higher. Renegal's now sat at 'Loved,' proving that Azuma was literally starting to replace Riser in the man's eyes as a son, while Layla's had strangely gone to 'Slightly Attracted' instead of 'Slightly Fond.'

Granted, from the way Layla was sitting next to him instead of the other side of Renegal, as well as how she was pressing her breasts into his arm casually, it seemed she didn't share her husband's view of seeing Azuma in a son light.

Is this Ravel's fault?

Ravel recklessly telling her father that his wife had cheated on him out of anger wasn't just an offhand comment, as Renegal had remarked to Azuma about his 'relationship problems' a couple of times. It had taken multiple meetings for Azuma to actually meet Layla, and it had been awkward as it seemed that both Phenex Family heads liked him more than each other.

They had become more friendly over time, but they both definitely focused on Azuma more than each other when he visited them.

"Oh, that sounds positively exciting! Tell me all about it, dear!" Layla pressed her breasts even more into Azuma's arm as she looked at him eagerly.

"It's absolutely brilliant! Tell her about it, my boy!" Renegal agreed with a nod, then glanced back at the television.

"Ah, it was nothing special," Azuma waved his hand dismissively, "It was a couple of years ago. I was deep in the depths of the underworld, in this little area called 'The Prison of Eternal Damnation and No Return.'"

"Oooh! I've never heard of that place," Layla stared at him with wide eyes, "It sounds super scary!"

"Yeah, it used to be pretty well known, but I used a spell to wipe everyone's memory of it," Azuma answered easily. It wasn't this easy when he had been shittly explaining the made-up story to Renegal, as the man had found loophole after loophole in his story.

I'm so glad LUK exists.

Luckily, literally, his LUK events ensured that his clearly fake story, which sounded like it had been made up by a five year old, was believed by the Phenex Family head.

"It's true," Renegal nodded proudly at Azuma's words, glancing around him at Layla, "I asked Lord Gremory to look into it for me, and he found a book deep within the dark magic section of the Gremory Library about The Prison of Eternal Damnation and No Return."

More specifically, it ensured that a place called 'The Prison of Eternal Damnation and No Return' had truly existed in the underworld at some point and was really wiped from the general population's memory.

Marlin or someshit probably did that. Shoutout to Marlin, er, wait, Merlin. Marlin's a fish.

"Woah!" Layla stared at him with stars in her eyes, learning forward a bit too far as her breasts fully squished around Azuma's arm, "You wiped everyone's memory?! You can do that?! You're so strong!"

[Slightly Attracted] -> [Attracted]

Azuma didn't think it was a coincidence that Layla reached down, deciding in that exact moment that she needed to loosen her dress as she pulled at the fabric in front of her breasts and gave Azuma an eyeful of her bare tits for a split second. He was even more certain it wasn't a coincidence by the way she smirked as she caught him looking.

"Yeah, I'm kinda badass at the whole magic thing. It's no big deal," Azuma waved his hand lazily, "So, I was in that place when I saw Better Riser for the first time. He was actually being hunted down, as Sirzechs Gremory - he goes by Lucifer now, but he was Gremory back then - was trying to kill him."

"I thought you said it was a few years ago?" Layla asked curiously, tilting her head cutely at him, "Sirzechs has been the Lucifer for centuries already."

"Remember when the government shut down for a day a few years ago?" Renegal interrupted.

"No," Layla frowned, shaking her head.

"I don't either, but it happened!" Renegal explained wisely, "Since there was no government, Sirzechs was a Gremory for just that day. We must've been busy that day and not noticed. I found an article about it in a history book."

Thank you, LUK!

This incident hadn't actually come from Azuma creating a blatantly stupid story but instead because Azuma was starting to get a bit concerned about how his LUK stat worked. He wasn't sure if it was changing the world around him or if it was compelling him to say stupid shit that just happened to line up with past events, so he had used this as a test. Unfortunately, asking Ravel later that day didn't give him any clarity, as it turned out that the entire Phenex Family were coincidentally busy on the day the devil government shut down and didn't pay attention to any world events.

"Anyway," Azuma started to continue the story again, "So, Sirzechs was hunting the phoenix down, but I respect phoenixes and stuff, y'know? They're super cool and shit."

I've never thought about a phoenix a day in my life until I got one.

"Soooo, I kicked his ass so bad that Better Riser was super impressed, and then he became my familiar!" Azuma finished dramatically, "Of course, I had to wipe Sirzech's memory afterward, so he can't confirm it, but Better Riser can! Better Riser, say nothing if the story is true!"

Better Riser didn't say anything because Better Riser was a bird who couldn't say anything.

It's a fool-proof plan.

Reputation Update!

Your Affection with [Layla Phenex] has advanced one stage!

[Attracted] -> [Slightly Loved]

His reputation with the woman was going up extremely quick, but it was only partially because of what he had said. His CHA had gone up a ton since he started farming it on crowds of goblins, so that helped out a lot.

It's hard being so sexy and charismatic and amazing and cool and badass-

Azuma's arrogant thoughts continued until Layla interrupted him.

"Woah!" Layla breathed out, staring at Azuma with huge eyes, "You beat Sirzechs?! He's, like, super duper strong! That's so cool!"

In case it wasn't obvious, the one thing that Ravel didn't take after her mother in was intelligence. Layla was a bit of an airhead.

"And you're so cute, Better Riser! I wouldn't even think you were a phoenix of legend just by looking at you!" Layla coo'd, rubbing the phoenix's burning feathers as they didn't seem to burn her.

You wouldn't?

Azuma looked at the literal flaming bird, then back up to Layla. Definitely an airhead.

"Did Riser hear you say Riser's name, Mother of Riser?" Azuma blinked as the door to the large open living room swung open, and a familiar face walked through.

Just who I've been waiting for!

Standing in the doorway was the third son of the Phenex Family: Riser Phenex. He looked just as Azuma remembered him, as he was blonde, tall, muscular, and was wearing a white dress shirt with a red jacket, red pants, and even red shoes. He also had an annoying arrogant look plastered on his face.

"Riser," Renegal greeted his actual son, but his face went from relaxed to angry, "You're late. You were supposed to be here over an hour ago! We've already finished dinner!"

True to his words, Azuma had arrived at the Phenex Estate over an hour ago for dinner. He had expected to see Riser right away, but the man had been absent throughout the entirety of the eating period and then had still not shown up when the trio moved to the couch to watch golf.

"Riser arrives when Riser wants to arrive," Riser merely smirked uncaringly, "Riser was taking care of more important matters with Riser's peerage."

Those 'matters' were pretty clear, as the Phenex son looked sweaty and Azuma could smell the scent of sex on him from even across the room.

He also sounds just as stupid as I thought he would.

The man referring to himself in third person sounded stupid, and with the arrogant look on his face Azuma would've naturally disliked him even if he didn't know what an asshole he was.

I'm also an asshole, but this guy takes it to a whole different level. Like, seriously, he called his mom 'Mother of Riser?' Is it even possible to be this self-centered?

"You spend too much time in your room and not enough time training," Renegal growled at Riser's arrogant words, "You'll grow rusty. You looked shameful in your last rating game."

"Riser won, didn't Riser?" Riser smirked in response to his father's words, "Riser is an invincible Phenex, so Riser can never lose. Now, why were you calling for Riser?"

"Oh, I wasn't calling for you," Layla clarified, gesturing to the phoenix in her lap, "I was talking to him! His name is Better Riser! Isn't that so cute?"

"...Better Riser?" Riser stared at her incredulously, and for once Azuma actually couldn't fault him. If his mother had brought home a bird and named him 'Better Azuma' he'd be pissed too.

"You named a mere bird that?!" A flare of fire shot out from Riser for a second as he glared at Better Riser.

"He's not just a bird!" Layla puffed out her cheeks, "He's an actual phoenix! Like, one of the ones from legend, Riser! Isn't that awesome?"

"Don't compare Riser to a lowly bird," Riser sneered, causing Layla to frown, "Riser doesn't care what he is! Riser is a true Phenex! Stop calling that stupid bird that name, or Riser will have to show him who the real Phenex is…"

As Riser looked at Better Riser threateningly, the actual Phenex let out an angry squawk and started to puff up. Azuma reached over, placing a hand on his phoenix to stop him. Despite looking like a small bird, Better Riser would most certainly fry actual Riser alive, which wouldn't be a good look in front of his parents.

I shouldn't have named him that. There are too many Risers in my head right now.

"I'd appreciate it if you didn't threaten my phoenix, Riser Phenex," Azuma finally spoke up, looking at Riser and locking eyes with him.

"Who is this lowly human?" Riser growled as Azuma spoke to him, "How dare you speak to Riser? Why is a lowly human even in Riser's house?!"

"This isn't your house, Riser," Renegal corrected with a stern look, "Be kind to our guest. If you had paid attention to what I said, you would have known that he was going to be here. He's your sister's boyfriend."

"Riser's sister is dating a lowly human?" Riser growled, glaring at Azuma, "This is why she should've joined Riser's peerage! Now the bitch has fallen so lowly as to-"

Riser jerked his head back, taking a step back as Azuma appeared in front of him in an instant. Azuma stood a couple of inches taller than the Phenex, and was looking down on him as they stood chest to chest.

"You can disrespect me, Riser Phenex," Azuma said bluntly, narrowing his eyes at the blonde man, "But I won't let you say something like that about Ravel."

Man, am I badass or what?

"S-So charming…" Layla fawned over him from him couch, confirming that his actions were working. Meanwhile, Renegal didn't say anything but also didn't move from the couch to stop Azuma.

Azuma would never admit the small pang of genuine anger that crossed through him at Riser's words. If you asked him, he would tell you that he was just doing this to impress the Phenex Family heads and goad Riser into doing something stupid. He would never admit that he felt a genuine need to defend Ravel.

Maybe I care about her a little bit…

That was as much as he would admit at the moment.

"You… a lowly human dares to threaten Riser-" Riser raised his hand as a flame appeared on his palm, but faster than his eyes could track, Azuma reached up and grabbed his wrist roughly.

I haven't just been sitting on my ass doing nothing.

Well, actually, he had spent a lot of time sitting on his ass doing nothing. But that 'nothing' had been partnered up with very small movements to boost his progress in certain training milestones combined with Artoria being nearby. As a result, Riser was like child's play compared to Azuma's rather high stats.

"Y-You-" Riser hissed in pain lightly as Azuma squeezed his wrist hard. It was hard enough that a burst of flames shot out from Riser's wrist, repairing his injuries. It would've burned Azuma's hand in the process, but his END was high enough that he just felt a bit of heat.

"Out of the respect and admiration I have for the rest of your family, I'll drop this matter," Azuma said smoothly, casually flicking his arm as he pushed Riser's wrist away and caused the man to stumble back a step, "But I'd appreciate it if you didn't speak about my girlfriend that way, even if she is your sister. I might not be able to hold myself back."

Azuma stepped back, returning to his position on the couch in between Renegal and Layla.

"You… who do you think you are, human?" Riser hissed, glaring at Azuma.

I'm so glad you asked, Riser.

Azuma leaned forward, ensuring his face was angled so that neither Renegal nor Layla could see it as a huge shit-eating grin formed on his face. The past weeks of work had all been leading up to this moment.

"I'm Azuma Kaito," He grinned widely, enjoying the way Riser's eyes widened in horror at his words.

"Y-You… IT'S YOU, YOU BASTARD!" Riser held his palms forward at Azuma, and a huge fireball suddenly shot forward at him.

"Riser! What do you think you're doing?!" Renegal scolded him angrily as he raised one of his hands. He opened his palm, then closed it, and in an instant the massive fireball disintegrated into nothing.

"Don't protect him, father! I'm going to kill him!" Riser roared, lashing out and sending another fireball at him, "I WON'T LET YOU KEEP TORMENTING ME, YOU BASTARD!"

It was a testament to just how angry Riser was that he dropped his third-person way of speaking, instead screaming straight from the heart.

"Stop this, Riser!" Renegal shouted, raising his hand and easily negating Riser's attack before it reached Azuma, "What the hell are you doing?!"

"I understand that you might be upset about me touching you earlier, Riser Phenex, but trying to kill me is a bit much," Azuma nodded sagely, a shit-eating grin still on his face, "I was simply defending my girlfriend. Don't take it so personally."

"And that was great of you, dear!" Layla agreed, pressing her breasts into Azuma's side, "Don't feel bad about it! Riser, what are you trying to do to our guest?! Did we not raise you better than this?!"

"N-No, you guys don't get it!" Riser growled, his eyes turning slightly manic as he glared at Azuma, "You don't understand! He's the one! He's the one who's been tormenting me!"

"Tormenting you?" Azuma asked in fake innocence, "What ever do you mean? I don't even know you."

"YES YOU DO, YOU BASTARD!" Riser roared again, flinging another fireball that Renegal effortlessly negated again, "You're the one whose been sending me those letters!"

"Letters?" Azuma tilted his head, doing his best to genuinely look confused, "It's 21st century, Riser. Does anyone use letters these days?"

"Yup, those are pretty outdated." Layla nodded sagely in agreement, "We use devmail now, Riser! I can show you how it works if you need help!"

Devil's have their own email?

"No! I know about devmail!" Riser growled, pointing threateningly at Azuma, "This bastard has been sending me letters for weeks! He's torturing me with those damn letters! Letters of my fiance!"

"You're fiance?" Renegal stared at him incredulously, "Rias Gremory? Why would Azuma be sending you letters about Rias?"

"Not just any letters! He's been sending me letters about what he's doing with that whore!" Riser growled.

"You shouldn't call your fiance, or anyone for that matter, a whore, Riser!" Layla scolded him, but Riser continued to rant.

"All those pictures! This bastard has been sending me pictures of him having sex with my fiance!" Riser shouted, "He's even been covering up all the good parts! I won't let him get away with this!"

Contrary to how Azuma was acting, Riser wasn't actually insane. But, part of the way he was going to get Rias out of the engagement contract with Riser involved making the Phenex son look insane.

So, for the past few weeks Azuma had been sending Riser letters. Letters that contained the many nude and near-nude pictures that Rias had been sending him, though he would block out all the actual goods. In Riser's eyes, he was not only being cucked, but he was getting giga-cucked to the point where he couldn't even see the naked parts of his fiance. Azuma made sure that only Riser saw the letters by giving them to Ravel to leave in his room, and he had made sure to mark each letter with his full name on the bottom.

Now, Riser was watching the man who he believed was cucking him, and then mocking him about cucking him, sit between his two parents. His father was scolding him as he took Azuma's side, and his mother was blatantly fawning over him as she pressed her large breasts into his side. To top it off, the man himself was staring at Riser with a shit-eating grin.

Sufficient to say, Riser attempting to kill Azuma wasn't actually that big of an overreaction. In fact, it was pretty justified.

"I haven't sent you any letters," Azuma shot back, "I hadn't even met you until today! But, I think I know what this is about…"

"You do?" Renegal asked, looking curiously at Azuma.

"Yes. To be honest, Renegal, Layla, I do know Rias Gremory. She's a good friend of mine and Ravel's," Azuma started to explain, doing his best to look honest, "But, she wanted to be more than friends, and Ravel wanted her to join our relationship. I turned her down because I respect her engagement to your son, but it seems Riser heard about it. I suspect that he's making up these letters to get back at me for Rias choosing me over him…"

"That's so noble of you," Layla looked at him with an appreciative nod, "...but marriages aren't that important, y'know? You could still get with a married woman!"

Damn, saying that right in front of your husband? Cold.

"I'm not making it up! Aggrh! Riser will prove it!" Riser huffed, turning around and stomping out of the room, "I saved all the letters, you bastard! I'll prove it!"

No you won't, moron.

Having a girlfriend who lived in the Phenex Estate had its benefits - mainly, that Azuma had Ravel sneak into Riser's room and burn all the letters a few days ago.

"I'm sorry for losing my cool there, Renegal, Layla," Azuma apologized smoothly, nodding at both of the Phenex Family heads, "It's just… hearing him call Ravel that really pissed me off. But, he's your son, so I shouldn't have done that."

"No, no, I understand," Renegal waved his apology off easily, and Azuma had to resist letting a grin slip onto his face, "He went too far. He… he's been going too far a lot lately."

I knew you would.

Lord Phenex was finally becoming fed up with his son. The plan was working perfectly.

"Yeah! It's Riser's fault for talking about his sister like that anyway," Layla pouted, looking slightly angrily at the doorway Riser left through, "He's been acting up a lot lately."

"What did you do, you bastard?!" Riser came rushing through the door again, glaring at Azuma, "They're gone! Where did you put all those letters, human?!"

"I didn't do anything," Azuma shook his head smoothly, "Because I never sent you any letters, Riser. I turned down Rias, okay? It's not my fault she prefers me over you. You have no reason to be upset at me."

"NO! You won't humiliate me like this!" Riser growled, raising his hands again as they lit on fire, "First you dare to take my sister, you lowly human! Then, you take my fiance! I won't let you get away with this!"

"Stop, Riser!" Renegal stood up abruptly, lashing out his hand and sending out a wave of fire as Riser launched a fireball of his own. Renegal's easily slammed into Riser's and swallowed it whole, then continued on and hit Riser himself.

"F-Father…" Riser trailed off angrily as he stumbled back, falling onto his ass from the impact.

"You've been bringing shame to our family name for too long, Riser!" Renegal growled, taking a step forward as he towered over Riser, "All you do is hide in your room and have sex with those damn women! Then you act like a fool in public! This is too much, Riser! I won't let you keep humiliating us like this! Not in front of our guest!"

"B-But father-"

"But nothing!" Renegal glared down at him, not turning around as he spoke to Azuma next, "I'm sorry for my son's actions, Azuma. I hope you can forgive us and not hold it against my family."

"Of course, I hold no hard feelings, Dad," Another shit-eating grin appeared on Azuma's face as Riser stared past Renegal in horror, "Ah, I mean, Renegal."

That simple word, Dad, was all it took. Renegal's back stiffened, and his voice wavered slightly as he spoke to Riser again, "You'll need to be punished for your actions, Riser. To make you understand how disgraceful you've been the past few years… I'm breaking your marriage contract with Rias Gremory!"

"W-What?! F-Father, you can't…" Riser trailed off, at a loss for words as he opened and closed his mouth like a goldfish.

"I can do whatever I please," Renegal shot back at the still sitting man, "I'll contact Lord Gremory. Azuma, if you'll accept it, I'd like to offer a new contract between you and Rias Gremory."

Man, this is even better than I expected.

Azuma had just wanted to get Renegal mad enough at Riser to break the contract, but to make one between him and Rias? It was the icing on top.

"W-What?! You can't do that! He's not a Phenex!" Riser stuttered out panickedly, pointing past Renegal at Azuma.

"He will be once he marries Ravel," Renegal said bluntly, "He'll be more of a Phenex than even you, Riser! He was chosen by a genuine phoenix of legend! He'll bring glory to our household, while you bring shame to our family's name every day! In fact, maybe taking your peerage away as well will teach you to behave like a proper Phenex!"

"N-No! You… You can't…" Riser didn't know what to say, just watching in disbelief as everything he had was taken from him, "You can't do this to me…"

"This is my apology for his actions. Will you accept, Azuma?" Renegal asked in finality.

Azuma enjoyed the sight of Riser staring at him with wide, horrified eyes. His beloved sister was dating him. His mother was pressing her breasts into his tormentor. His father was taking everything that should've been his and giving it to a human instead.

A shit-eating grin formed on Azuma's face as he stared down Riser, his eyes staring directly into the Phenex's horrified ones.

"I will."
