They reached Kai's bike. Too small for all three of them.
Kai turned to Lucas' wife.
"Get in one of their cars. I'll cover you. Drive to the safe house."
Kai gave her the address.
She didn't question him. Not after what she had just witnessed. She hurried into the nearest car, the girls hopping in beside her.
Kai watched them disappear down the road, his expression unreadable.
He pulled out his phone. One call. Three rings.
Lucas picked up.
Before Kai could speak, Lucas' voice came through, strained but filled with hope.
"My girls? My wife?"
"Safe."
Immediately a breath of relief on the other end of the line.
Then—
A dark chuckle. Kai's gaze shifted sharply.
He could hear it through the phone.
Jonathan.
"You really trust that guy, Lucas?" Jonathan's voice was smooth, mocking.
"Because I'm telling you… he won't save your family."
Lucas' tone darkened.
"I trust him more than I ever trusted you."
At that moment Jonathan laughed harder. The sound was almost gleeful.
