Chapter 37 - 37: The Man Who Walks Through Fire

I am enchanted by the man who walks through fire

I stretch my arms to catch the cinders

And recoil at the flames, eyes still glowing under the blaze

What courage and stamina he must have

To walk through scalding flame, and endure burning hardship

***

But I am a coward, afraid of pain and injury

So I wait for the embers to cool,

And I watch the man who walks through fire;

I wonder how many of us will really walk through flames

And how many of us are just watching and waiting.

***

Each day I try again to brace the flames

And each day again, I recoil.

How can I not be captivated by him, who walks ahead of me?

How I wish that I could touch his hot skin

And say that I too have walked through flame

***

What visions I have of my journey through fire

How I'd dance upon the coals, and put on a show

The people would clap and admire my burning feet

and the show would go on with me in the spotlight

stepping softly across the burning stage

***

But I am no dancer, and this is not my stage

Life is a show which belongs to more mysterious actors

And all I can do, is to watch the man who walks through fire

To applaud his dashing bravery, and admire his burning pace

And chase his back at a faraway distance.

***

And if one day I should find myself at the forefront

And feel the stares of those left behind in my wake

I shall follow his footsteps through the flame

And step over the blackened coals where he had walked before

To wherever this road shall lead us.

***

Oh, how we chase the man who walks through fire.

Walk on, my heroes,

Walk on.
