Those who went out to work have all come back to the village for the New Year.
Many people, hesitant to spend money on food and clothes while working away from home, don new clothes and sit at the card table with a fine cigarette bought especially for the New Year, ready to take down everyone around.
Of course, most of the time, they are the ones being defeated.
You see, in nearly every village there are a small group of people who don't work regularly and just spend their days playing cards, relying on the New Year games to win enough money to live on for the coming year.
And those who work outside the village rarely have the chance to play cards, so their skills can't match those of the village regulars, not to mention the chance of running into rigged games.
