Chapter 73 - Devil's Work

The tension in the courtroom was sharp enough to slice through titanium.

The moment Jason stepped forward — sleek gray suit, perfect gelled hair, smug expression like he already won — even Matt tensed slightly. And Matt never tensed.

Jason's presence wasn't just polished — it was deliberate. Like he was there for more than just winning a case. He was there to destroy.

He strolled up to the prosecution table, flipping open his leather-bound file with theatrical flair.

"Your Honor," he said with a voice like silk dipped in poison, "we are here because the accused, Alexander—" he paused for effect "—brutally murdered a man on the street and fled the scene."

Deadpool whispered from the back: "He practiced that line in the mirror like twenty times. Bet money on it."

Jason's eyes flicked toward Alex like he was trying to look through him.

"Not only do we have a witness," he said, pacing like a predator, "but the accused was also found at the scene, with blood on his hands, and zero alibi."

Matt stood calmly, unbothered. "May I remind the court, this witness has yet to be identified. In fact, the prosecution hasn't even provided their full credentials."

Jason smiled. "They prefer anonymity due to safety concerns. You understand how that works, don't you, Mr. Murdock? People who get too close to the truth… often don't walk away."

Matt turned slightly, his face still composed. "Is that a threat, counselor?"

"No," Jason said. "It's a reminder. Some truths are better buried."

Alex whispered, "This guy's straight-up giving off villain monologue energy."

Matt subtly nodded. "Let him keep talking. He's doing my job for me."

Jason approached the stand now, pointing toward Alex.

"Tell me, Mr. Alexander," he said sharply, "where exactly were you between 2:35 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. last night?"

Alex opened his mouth, but Jason cut him off immediately.

"Oh wait—don't answer. Because you 'don't know,' right?" He turned to the jury. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is a man with powers — enhanced abilities, and who knows what else. Is it so far-fetched that someone like him could snap? Kill someone? Cover it up?"

Matt finally stepped forward.

"No further conjecture will be tolerated, Your Honor. The prosecution is framing my client based on his biology, not the facts. That's not law — that's fearmongering."

The judge looked between them. "Mr. Jason, dial it back. Stick to the evidence."

Jason smiled again, unbothered. "Of course, Your Honor. The evidence will speak soon enough."

Matt leaned toward Alex again. "He's not in this for the win. He's here to break you down."

"Yeah, I noticed," Alex muttered. "He's got Bond villain energy without the class."

"Just stay calm," Matt replied. "He's a puppet. Someone else is pulling the strings."

Alex narrowed his eyes. "The guy who accused me?"

Matt nodded. "The real killer."

Deadpool popped a juice box in the back row and whispered to Hughie:"I love this. It's Suits meets Daredevil with a splash of Phoenix Wright: Objection Edition."
