The intermittent illumination revealed what I'd been refusing to acknowledge—Austin's chest no longer rose with the rhythmic assurance of life, Elijah's fingers no longer twitched with involuntary reflexes. They lay utterly, terrifyingly still.
"Main power restored!" a technician announced, his triumphant shout ringing hollow in the suffocating silence.
