Cherreads

Chapter 18 - To worm the beholder

Free falling, Alexia scrunched up her nose. " " Eww. The air quality is detestable. I rate it a four." Helian who was at the side, stared at her with amusement and chirped. " The view from here is amazing. I give it a ten."

Looking down, Alexia's face twisted in disgust. " This place looks like an abandoned mission testing site. How do your eyes work?" Crossing his wings on his chest, Helian laughed with wild abandon. " I'm not looking at that, but something much more intriguing."

Alexia's face heated up. " Do you ever have one serious moment you lecherous phoenix?" Yelling out of embarrassment, she unintentionally shot out a fire blast.

*Boom*

Luckily for Helian, he dodged, or his head would have been singed. The fire blast hit the walls of the monster's pink insides. It left a smoking charred spot where flesh should have been. Gasping, Alexia's hands flew to her mouth. " I didn't mean to do that. It just happened."

Helian gave a disbelieving look. " Oh yeah? And for the record I may be flirtatious but there's no way, you can describe my great self as something so detestable as being lecherous."

" Oh great Aetherion. Please stop your yapping." Sticking out her tongue, Alexia said. " You..." He broke off his sentence when he had to dodge another fire ball aimed at his stomach.

" Sorry my hand slipped."

" Alexia stop that. Wait why is it getting bigger?!"

*Boom*

" Why does this place smell like roast chicken? Haha you're really smoking hot now."

" Don't make me retaliate!"

*Boom*

*Boom*

" I'm so scared."

Alexia taunted in a baby voice. Except for the time that she had first found him, Helian had never used his powers. He had claimed that he was oh so powerful but on most occasions. He was as useless as a mermaid swirling in a sky bound cyclone.

The insides trembled and tensed drawing her attention away from Helian. Alexia's face turned pink in embarrassment when she saw how different parts of the monster had been charred black like charcoal. ' Maybe I over did it a little bit. "

Flapping his little wings, Helian scowled at Alexia. This young lass never took him seriously. But she was right to be . He couldn't use his powers anymore. He didn't even remember who he was clearly. ' She doesn't have to know that.' His inner voice whispered. Nodding to himself, he moved his gaze downwards. With an off hand tone, he said.

" This looks like a big drop. Maybe we'll plummet into some rancid stomach acid. Its been some time since I've had a good swim." Though he sounded casual. He couldn't help feeling downcast in his heart. Knowing only tidbits of himself made him feel incomplete. ' But that just makes you better.' He assured himself.

Shifting her gaze from the charred insides, Alexia gave him a brief once-over " What are you worried about? Can't you fly if you want to?" A bit of unintended jealousy sneaked into her voice as she looked at his wings.

Helian blinks, before shifting on the air uncomfortably. Clearing his throat, he asked. " But do I really want to?"

" At this rate, you two will destroy the lava worm before saving the target." Detecting the slight anger from her intuition, Alexia suddenly had a random thought. " Are you are girl or boy? Why don't I call you Hermes. Intuition doesn't sound nice all the time."

Intuition, now called Hermes replied in a deadpan tone. " Whatever. All I know is that you should hurry up before he becomes dinner." Nodding, Alexia pulls out a translucent emerald dagger. Scrutinizing it, she whistles performing flips in the air. " Uncle Kace sure knows how to give a gift."

Shifting sideways, she plunged her dagger into the flesh of the beast, drawing out purplish green blood. Watching it drip unto the dagger, she comforted herself. ' I've already burnt the insides. What's one little tear going to do?'

Propping her feet against the wall, Alexia employed the dagger to make a make shift brake. She could feel vibrations racing through the beast's body.

Blowing away a rogue strand of silver hair, Alexia nodded to herself." Okay Hermes. Now what?" As usual, they communicated through Alexia's mind. " Now you look for him of course." Choosing to overlookits matter of fact tone, Alexia pursed her lips. " Who is he exactly?"

" Haven't I said it before? He's the person you have to save."

"*Sigh* Okay where is he?"

" Around here. Why do you always ask the obvious?"

With a smile that didn't reach her eyes, Alexia's body trembled in suppressed anger. " I'm honestly impressed. We've been talking about this for half a day and I've still learnt nothing. That's a new record."

" I'm just ensuring mission parameters are being met. Now step on it. You're about to lose him." After saying that, it disappeared once more.

" This place is hotter than a curvy dragon in a transparent bathing suit." The contrast between his serious tone and the context of his words really made a person wonder. Deeming it a waste of time to talk to such a person, Alexia glanced down, her eyes sweeping over the scene below.

" Holy mother of cream corn." Alexia cried out in surprise. " Cream corn? Is that also one of your traditions? Like gladiator gold ice cream?" Alexia jabbed her finger towards the stomach of the lava worm. They were approaching it quickly.

Helian's gaze dropped. His shoulders lifted in a dismissive shrug. " You're acting like

you've never seen a tiny world nestled in the stomach of a legendary apex monster before. Totally normal right?" Alexia of course tuned him out.

Below them, a piece of uneven white land stood. It was floating on top of green gooey digestive liquid that occupied the beasts stomach. Numerous bubbles formed on its surface, only to pop and sizzle a second later. " I can already imagine the refreshing splash of swimming here. "

A bright smile spread across Alexia's face . "Sure. Let's dive." Helian looked at her as if she just said that the sky was purple. " I don't follow." Without explantation, Alexia darted forward, grasped Helian firmly, and flung him forward with a burst of strength. Tuning out his protests, Alexia shut her eyes.

Using her spiritual sense, Alexia felt around for the fire power stored within her soul. " Got you." Materializing an arm made of spiritual energy, she guided it to spread to her legs and condense. " Here goes nothing." Flames erupted from her feet, plumes of smoke billowed upwards. With the speed of a falling star, Alexia spiraled downwards.

Since this was the first time she had ever tried something like this, she was finding it difficult to control it. Pocketing the dagger, she increased the fire power.

With a crash, Alexia and Helian landed on the squirming piece of white island. " You're crazy. You know that?" Helain was beyond exasperated. He couldn't remember his past life but he was sure that he had never met someone as unpredictable as this hybrid.

Alexia's whole body shuddered. She sat up straight as if electrocuted. Gagging she rubbed her exposed arms." Why does this island feel slimy and squishy?"

" Wow talk about a bad diet." Helian's attention was on a different issue. Namely the scene inside the monster's belly.

All around them were massive beast caresses, a black cat, decapitated bodies and corroded down tree bark.

Wait a black cat?
