With a smirk, I deftly rolled over and reluctantly released her. The grass beneath us was cool and slightly damp, the scent of crushed petals lingering in the air. She lay rigid on the ground, her chest rising and falling rapidly as she gasped for breath. Her wide, frightened eyes stared up at me, and for a moment, I wondered if she'd bolt like a startled deer.
"You… why are you a vampire?" she finally managed to ask, her voice trembling.
How absurd! Did she think I had a choice in the matter? Amused, I chuckled and replied, "I was born this way, just like you were born human!"
She swallowed hard, her fingers clutching at the fabric of her skirt. "Were you going to bite me earlier?"
