Time passed and they graduated successfully, but Gu Lian was still not willing to tell Fu Ling the little secret. At this point, Fu Ling had become very impatient but he was also helpless to urge Gu Lian.
On this day, he was lying on the sofa watching a variety show when Gu Lian came in. He went behind Fu Ling and rubbed his head.
Fu Ling was already used to this kind of interaction so he didn't even turn around.
Gu Lian saw he was being ignored so he had to say something first
"Follow me somewhere"
Fu Ling finally turned around to see his housemate who refused to say anything even after he waited for so long. He sighed slightly.
"I'm not in the mood"
Gu Lian paused
"Are you angry?"
Fu Ling smiled brightly at him
"Of course not"
Gu Lian nodded softly
"Well, I was going to tell you about what I said before but since you don't want to go out today, let's leave it till another day. "
Fu Ling wanted to keep ignoring him but curiosity got the best of him. He got up casually from the chair and stretched himself.
"What are we waiting for then? Let's go."
Gu Lian hid the smile at the corner of his mouth and they went out together.
Fu Ling kept pestering him to say but he wouldn't budge until they got to the appointed place.
They passed by a flower shop and Gu Lian bought a small bunch and gave them to Fu Ling.
Fu Ling took the flowers with confusion
"Oh, thank you?"
They walked for a few minutes more and got to a bridge. They were locks attached to the railing for as far as the eye could see. It was a famous couples bridge where couples would hand locks and throw the key into the lake and pray for their relationship to last.
The scenery was quite good here though. And it was close to home. It's no wonder Gu Lian would wander here.
They both stood there and watched the sun set on the lake and there was a sense of tranquility as the cool breeze blew against them.
Gu Lian thought the time was just about right so he turned to the person standing beside him
"Fu Ling, I—"
There was a screech of tires that sounded way too close. Without thinking about it, Gu Lian grabbed Fu Ling and hugged him and protected his head then turned his back to the car.
The impact was heavy and brutal. There was a muffled grunt and they both fell to the ground. Fu Ling had a few cuts and bruises at most but Gu Lian... wasn't so lucky. There was blood spilling out from his mouth and even a layman could tell he definitely broke something .
Fu Ling stood up and looked at the scene in front of him with shock, the flowers discarded. He took out his phone and his fingers trembled as he dialed the emergency number. He forgot how he answered the questions or what they even asked in particular but when he heard they would send someone over, he immediately threw down the phone and knelt in front of Gu Lian. He didn't know why but it felt like there was a hand pressing his heart which prevented him from breathing properly.
He grabbed Gu Lian's hand and tried to reassure him.
"Help is on the way. Don't worry the ambulance will be here soon. You'll be okay."
He cleaned the blood from Gu Lian's mouth and there was a sense of dread in his heart.
Gu Lian opened his mouth with difficulty. He knew his body best and could already tell he probably wouldn't make it.
"Bend ... head.."
Fu Ling understood his words and immediately leaned down.
Gu Lian stretched his neck and pecked the person on his lips. There was endless regret in his heart. If he knew they wouldn't have enough time, he would have confessed earlier. But there was nothing he could do about it now.
"Take care of yourself for me, my Lingling baby"
Fu Ling was stunned and looked at Gu Lian in disbelief. Gu Lian kissed him. His first kiss. In all the worlds he has ever been to, this is the first time someone kissed him. He unconsciously stayed in that position for a long time and the person slowly lost breath .
There was a faint golden light that came out of Gu Lian's body and twirled around Fu Ling before dissipating but he wasn't in the mood to take note of that.
When the paramedics arrived, Gu Lian was already dead. However there was a faint smile at the corner of his lips.
No matter how slow Fu Ling was when it came to love affairs, he wasn't stupid. He looked at his bloody hands and for the first time since he came to this world, he cried.
He sat down with his hands on his head and broke into heart wrenching sobs. He declined offers of help from everyone and just sat there in a daze.
This was the scene Wei Hong Yi met when he finally got the news and rushed over. He pulled Fu Ling from the ground and Fu Ling allowed himself to be manipulated by the other party. He didn't have the strength to resist now.
Wei Hong Yi helped him into the backseat and heard Fu Ling mutter
"He liked me. How could I be so stupid not to have noticed?"
Accompanying this was a sound of laughter and tears at the same time.
Wei Hong Yi went to the driver's side with a heavy heart. He could not bring himself to say any words of comfort and they stayed in silence.
Not long after, there was a sound of even breathing and Wei Hong Yi turned around to see the person had fallen asleep.
It wasn't a long drive from the bridge back to their apartment. He helped Fu Ling out of the backseat into the house.
He cleaned Fu Ling's bloody hands with some wet wipes and closed his door.
Life is short. Sometimes it's better to just do things than wait for later. But probably no one would expect a healthy young man in his prime to die.
