Adam lay on the blood-soaked ground, his body trembling like a leaf in a storm. His chest rose and fell in ragged, uneven breaths, every inch of him screaming in pain. His muscles twitched involuntarily, his nerves still raw from the agony of whatever the hell had just happened to him.
He felt achey all over.
Like he had been torn apart, thrown into a blender, and somehow stitched back together by a drunk surgeon. His vision was still hazy from his gruesome evolution. The thick scent of his own blood filled the air, mixing with the smoke from the burning village.
『Master, are you alright』
The System's voice rang in his head, calm as ever, completely ignoring the fact that he had just screamed his lungs out like a dying animal.
Adam let out a weak, breathless laugh.
"Hah… ha… For a moment there, I thought I was actually gonna die."
He wasn't even exaggerating.
What he felt during his adaption was not mere pain...that was pure, unfiltered suffering.
