I looked at my father again.
He was still holding the knife out, waiting for me to take it.
But I couldn't.
My hands refused to move.
How could I take the knife when I didn't even know what I was supposed to do with it?
Kill Selene?
Kill?
That word alone made my legs weak.
How do people even do that?
I've lied. I've schemed. I've manipulated. But… kill?
That was a different level of evil. And even though I've done terrible things in my life, this one felt… too real. Too bloody. Too final.
My lips trembled as I tried to speak. "Papa, I… I-I…"
I couldn't finish the sentence. My voice was lost. My fear swallowed it.
He looked at me and smiled that fake smile of his—the one he always used when he needed me to do his dirty work.
"You don't need to worry, my daughter," he said in a calm voice.
And just like that, I understood.
Every time he called me "my daughter" like that, it meant he wanted something from me.
