Chapter 5 - Laipel The Lier

In the next morning people at the tavern were discussing about the share market. The share prices rose today and that made everyone happy. A man, drinking an expensive beer cried out "I knew my life wasn't an entire pile of trash. The market never forgets you. I bet my life's savings on this share for it to grow, and tonight I will have twice the returns." He started laughing hysterically as if the world belonged to him. Life of the common man had grown miserable, even though the market, where people buy and sell commodities alongside the rich was not fair to the common man, it did reserve a luck for the ones with great fortune. And the man was one of those lucky few. Few more people surrounded him to ask about his good fortune. They weren't elated because of his victory but rather jealous of his luck and wanted to become like him, lucky. "Hey hey dude, tell us more."

"Yeah, yeah. Which party's share had you bought? When did you sell and how did you think it will grow so much?"

People gathered around him like moth around a flame. The gamble that paid of by chances had attracted more of those having miserable fortune towards it. The flame of bad luck was ready to engulf them. "Ho ho ho. It isn't just some ordinary luck you see," began the drunk man, "My mother always told me I was born with it. Even when I was little I was lucky enough to command the fortune goddess to be by my side. That's how I survived for so long without my parents you see. I'm the King now ho ho ho."

"Oh King Laipel please tell us our way" shouted out the merry onlookers. "Ho ho okay now let's see. Buy me a few more drinks and I will tell you the truth" replied Laipel. A few guys went to the barkeep Damvel asking for a few more drinks but he gave a stern look signalling them something. The drunk men didn't care much and asked for more drinks for their newly crowned King of fortune. As they drank more and more the poor men suddenly fell a pain in their head. Suddenly things went blank and now they were in deep sleep. Laipel searched through their belongings and took what he wanted. It was a treasure, not to the poor peasants but to Laipel. He brushed the upper part of the round shiny globe. And then pressed on a tiny silhouette. Suddenly the ball turned and and made all sorts of motion until a Ruby like crystal came out of it. "Dumb peasants thought they would sell the globe at the black market for some cheap price. Ho ho ho didn't you know the real value that this held inside of it!"

Damvel knew Laipel since he was a baby. He was a mischievious fellow. Telling lies and scamming others was his hobby. When he was twelve he used cry out, "War has broken out. War has broken out." The civilians petrified shut their doors and windows and jump up and down like some sheep. Then the lier Laipel stood in the middle of the crossroad laughing out, "Ho Ho Ho! Look the fools hiding like dummies." Annoyed by his action the people gathered with sticks and hoes attacked the lier Laipel. He used to do that every week. Free like the wind he never really cared about his family's poverty. All he cared was his laughter and lies.

But that joy turned into nightmare when the King Valikin imposed Royal taxes on the poor 4 years later. The taxes were so high he couldn't pay even with his blood. But he loved his country and thus he stayed. He was not strong enough to fight and thus couldn't loot newcomers in the country. But today was different. Before arriving to the tavern he heard some Corlette Gang members talking about a pendant with a ruby crystal on top that glew brightly in the dark , like the moon, which the King wanted so much so that he could give 5 million Seals to anyone who would bring it to him. They also whispered that some people few months saw a gypsie hiding something similar to the crystal in a ball like structure. Since spotting it neither the gypsie nor the ball was seen again.

Luck was on Laipel's side as he saw those dumb peasants talking while carrying that ball in their bag and hoping to sell them in the black market. "Ho ho ho. And now I, Laipel, shall sell it to the King of the Desmiri." cried out Laipel. Damvel sitting by the table asked him, "How long will you carry that fake smile on your face, kid. I know what you do for the poor of the country, at the expense of your own safety. Stop doing it anymore Laipel, this will only...."

"Stop, please" Laipel stood there holding his face in his hands. He couldn't look at Damvel for he would see the tears in his eyes. He remembered the face of his grandma, the only person that ever loved him wholeheartedly. He pulled out his face and looked at Damvel, tears rolling down his cheek but a round smile on his face "Don't say that to anyone old man." Saying this he ran off.

Back at the dark castle of Desmiri, the King was drinking the grand elixir of the country. It was the most expensive thing one could ever imagine. It was so sweet as if an beautiful angel made it out of her love potion. It gave strength and immunity more than any drink in the empire. As he drank he spoke, "Say, General of the army. What do you think of good and evil?" The chief quickly adjusting his armour kneeled in front of his emperor, "Well Sir I think of them as opposing forces of nature. They are concepts made by man, to justify their actions, for that is all I know and think of."

"You are certainly diligent in your answer. But why do they oppose each other? For in a war who do you think is of good and evil?" the King retorted. "Well Sir as for why they oppose them, I believe it is just like creation and destruction, both must exist, but in doing so they should oppose each other for natural balance. And as for your next question, I believe it is the winner to judge who the good is. It is they who decide the truth" The King drank from his elixir and stood up with an evil grin. "True are your words Simon. It is the winner who decides the on who the good and evil are. And thus we need evil to make the fools worship gods once again. Unless an evil is unleashed these poor heretics won't believe in God's true wisdom. And only then I will become their true Godly Emperor." Saying this he laughed so loud that the walls of the castle shook in tremor.
