"One more time," I said while drinking from my cup, hoping it had been corrected, but they had made a secondary punch for the ones under 21.
" Dude, I don't know what to tell you, your actions were recorded, they saw you fight alongside the Fantastic 4, they saw save citizen by healing them, they saw you rebuild the Notre Dame, which was sick, and since your physical features resembled the one of a Leshy, a folklore monster known for protecting nature, thye gave you that name, what more can I say." Peter once again told me, the fact that all it took for them to see me as a hero still bugged me.
I sighed and instead looked at Mary, currently riding obsidian like a horse and chasing Ivy.
" Superhero thing aside, where have you been, dude? It's been almost a month since we last saw you."
A flash of all the things that happened in the last days filled my mind, almost dying, getting stronger, almost dying again, getting a daughter, becoming a hero, and almost destroying this dimension by trying to help Mary, can't say I haven't been occupied.
" A lot." I didn't say anything further, which seemed to work for Peter, who decided to change the subject.
" You became a dad?"
" That's what I wanted to ask, too. I didn't picture you as the dad type from the videos." A feminine voice said from behind Peter.
I had seen her sometimes on the news, Bruce Banner's cousin, Jennifer Walters or better known as She-Hulk. Why are all the female heroes I met so hot? What the fuck is going on?
" Can't trust a book by its cover? Jokes aside, I found her in a bad spot and helped her get back up. Less than a month ago, she couldn't even smile." I said while smiling, seeing the current Mary and thinking of the Mary I had found, they were two different but similar little girls.
Peter's face hardened. I knew that face; my skills helped me recognise it immediately, and he thought it was his fault.
" It was in Italy, you couldn't have helped."
" But-"
" You can't save everyone, no one can save everyone, we are humans and as such we aren't omnipotent, thinking you can save everyone every time is nothing more than bland stupidity or arrogance."
" That is quite cynical from someone who saved a little girl." Jennifer pointed out, trying to test out my tolerance to insults.
" I am cynical, I am human, it's in our blood to be such, it is in our mind to push beyond cynicism and do the right thing, I know I can't help everyone, damn I thought I coulden't even help myself, but I did, I helped someone, I helped her."
Silence fell, the heaviness of my words making the discussion a bit too much for a first meeting. Fortunately, some people have skin thicker than rocks.
" ADRIAN, come here for a second," Ben said from the other side of the room.
I placed my drink on the table and nodded to the two, walking away from a possible deeper discussion. I don't want to talk about myself with new people.
" New people are about to arrive, so we want you to meet them. Some of them might try to plant a localizer on you, so be careful."
"They what?"
Before I could ask any further questions, a black jet arrived, a big A on the bottom of it immediately made me realise who had arrived, the big group, the ones who started the golden era for the heroes, the ones with heavy hitters, the Avengers.
Landing in front of the entrance, the bottom of the jet opened, letting some people I quickly recognised walk out of it, Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Bruce Banner, Falcon, Hawkeye, and some I didn't recognize, more specifically, a smoking secy redhead, and a black man with an eye-patch.
My eyes locked onto the redhead, we looked at each other, and I immediately remembered her. I had wasted a piece of pizza running away from her after all.
" You." She said before I could, anger coming out of her words.
" You know her?" Ben asked me.
" I might have thrown a piece of pizza at her face."
Tony, who had gotten interested in seeing the redhead angry, paid close attention to what I said, and almost fell to his knees when he heard my answer.
" Please tell you have it on video, no, forget that, I have satellites for a reason." Tony, and from his bracelet, a hologram was produced, and in less than 3 seconds, which was the time it required for the redhead to almost choke Tony, the video of when she tried to approach me and I threw the pizza was visible to everyone.
He began laughing even harder when he saw me running away and the woman's face covered in cheese and pepperoni.
Tony's laugh stopped when he felt the woman's hand pressed against his shoulder, he must have felt a lot of pain because he immediately deleted the video and stopped laughing.
" In my defence, you were weird, who the hell approaches a kid eating pizza? Even more considering we are from two different worlds, you scream hot model, I scream nerd kid who wished to have his head crushed by thigs, we don't match."
Tony snickered but remained composed since the woman was still on his side.
" Let's get inside, and we can talk, Adrian. I am freezing my big thighs out here." She said while moving a hand against her body in a sultry way
" SEE? WHO THE HELL JUST SAYS THAT TO AN 18-YEAR-OLD? I AIN'T WORTH THAT." I said while walking behind Ben to use him as a shield from the scary, sexy redhead.
She sighed and walked inside, followed behind from everyone who had come out of the jet.
I immediately caught the hand of the black man, who was trying to barely touch my shirt.
We looked at each other.
" I am not tearing your arm off only because you are doing your job, and I don't want another life on my mind."
He continued looking, but after a few seconds, he crushed the localizer in his hand and walked away, a small smile, almost imperceptible on his face.
Sighing, I walk back towards the living room, aware that this was just the beginning of the long night.
