Chapter 54 - His Scent, My Sin

The morning light crept in, brushing the floorboards like a cautious thief. I blinked against it, stretching my limbs, cold and stiff from a restless night alone.

Lucas still hadn't returned.

I pressed a hand against the empty side of the bed. The sheets were cold. Too cold. That meant he hadn't come back at all, not even briefly.

What was he doing?

Was he still handling the issue he mentioned last night? Or had he gone back to the darker part of his world the one filled with secrets and blood, the one I couldn't see, only feel?

My thoughts spiraled fast. I wrapped the blanket tighter around me and sat on the edge of the bed, watching the door. Still no sound. No footsteps. No shadows moving past the crack of light underneath.

I hated how much I noticed that.

And I hated even more how my chest tightened with worry instead of relief.
