Chapter 78: The Hyuga Clan
As for those who were truly innocent, it was understandable that the Police Force, less skilled in interrogation than ANBU, hadn't uncovered the truth just yet.
After a long day of work, Shisui approached Uchiha Douhuan and requested permission to let Itachi view the evidence.
Douhuan thought it over for a moment and agreed.
After all, if this could help Itachi see reality clearly, it would save him a lot of future trouble.
However, when Douhuan and Shisui went to look for Itachi together, they were informed that he had already left.
Shisui spent the entire night searching the village, but Itachi, already an elite jōnin, was too skilled to be found when deliberately hiding. Even Shisui came up empty-handed.
The next morning, when Uchiha Douhuan saw the exhausted look on Shisui's face, he understood immediately.
"You didn't find him?" Douhuan asked.
"No." Shisui looked visibly worn out, rubbing his temples with a pained expression. "I have no idea where that kid ran off to."
"Forget it. No need to search. It looks like he's already made the choice he believes is right," Douhuan said, eyes flashing.
"Douhuan…" Shisui hesitated, wanting to defend Itachi.
"Shisui, you know the Uchiha temperament better than anyone. Once someone from our clan makes up their mind, they never turn back," Douhuan's tone had gone cold. "Clearly, he didn't take to heart anything I told him last time."
Douhuan patted Shisui on the shoulder. "Go rest for half a day if you're tired."
"We're just going to leave him alone?" Shisui blinked.
"There's no need," Douhuan replied coolly. "I already told him: in the face of overwhelming forces, individual strength means nothing. Seems he's quite confident—wants to challenge that truth."
Shisui sighed and returned to his seat in silence. Meanwhile, Douhuan looked out the window, a flicker of killing intent flashing in his eyes.

In the days that followed, the investigation neared its conclusion. The truth of those past crimes came to light—most victims had been children from small Konoha clans possessing kekkei genkai. The Moonlight Clan, for example, known for their Perception Release, had lost three children over the years.
Families of the victims were grateful and moved by the compensation and justice delivered by the Police Force. On the other hand, the assets of the Shimura, Mitokado, and Koharu clans had been cut by two-thirds. The Shimura clan, in particular, had been reduced overnight to a shadow of its former self.
Douhuan had effectively removed most of the Shimura clan's powerhouses, leaving behind only a few chūnin and one tokubetsu jōnin—members of a side branch that had long been oppressed for refusing to join Danzo's Root organization. Now, they barely qualified as a shinobi clan.
On the interrogation front, the Police Force achieved stunning results. Over ten senior members of the Mitokado and Koharu clans, including Mitokado Kei, confessed to the charges. The entire investigation was wrapping up—only the final report needed to be submitted to Hiruzen, and the last round of seized assets distributed to victims' families.
"Everyone's worked hard," Douhuan said with a smile in the interrogation room. "Once the final assets are handed over, I've booked us a private room at BBQ Q. I hope everyone will join me for a meal."
"Captain Douhuan, you're too kind," replied several ANBU agents who had been helping. These past few days had opened their eyes to why the village buzzed about the generous treatment at the Police Force.
They had worked long hours to bring closure to the victims' families—but unlike in ANBU, where they were used to starving while working overtime, the Police Force had provided nightly meals and, more surprisingly, paid them overtime based on Police Force wages. In just a few days, they earned what would normally take a month in ANBU. And now a celebration?
The final batch of seized property from the three clans was worth about 150 million ryō—roughly one-third of the total—and it was reserved for the remaining victims who hadn't yet been compensated. These included members of the Uchiha, Inuzuka, Aburame clans, and families of Fourth Hokage-era soldiers who had died in the Third Shinobi War.
In other words, this final distribution was essentially Douhuan's way of rewarding his own people.
Among the remaining names, several were from the Hyuga Clan.
Douhuan picked out a few prime commercial properties from the seized deeds, then retrieved the list of Hyuga victims and said to the team in the room, "I'll deliver these to the Hyuga myself. The rest, distribute according to the list, then meet me at BBQ Q."
"Understood!" the members of the joint investigation team nodded.
---
Douhuan, holding the property deeds and name list, arrived at the Hyuga clan's main estate.
He knocked. A member of the branch family opened the gate.
Douhuan smiled and said, "Please inform Clan Leader Hiashi that the Police Force Captain, Uchiha Douhuan, is here to visit."
Hyuga Hiashi, who had just finished teaching Hinata the clan's Gentle Fist techniques, quickly received the message.
"The Police Force Captain?" Hiashi's brows furrowed. If this had been a casual visit, Douhuan would have introduced himself as Uchiha Clan Leader. But he used his official title, which meant this was a formal matter.
"The clan hasn't had any issues with the Police Force recently…" Though puzzled, Hiashi knew it was improper to leave a guest at the gate—especially a clan leader like Douhuan.
As he had a servant prepare tea, Hiashi personally went to greet his guest.
"Clan Leader Hiashi," Douhuan greeted with a smile as Hiashi approached.
"Clan Leader Douhuan, please come in," Hiashi replied with a standard polite smile, leading him into the estate.
