Chapter 80: The Land of Waves
"Besides, this is just a small amount. I'll teach you how to make real money next time," Uchiha Douhuan patted Kakashi on the shoulder with a smile.
"How about we don't wait—let's do that tomorrow," Kakashi replied seriously.
"Oh? What's the rush?" Douhuan raised a brow. "The mission in the Land of Waves, huh?"
"Yeah," Kakashi nodded. "The Third Hokage spoke with me. A group of bandits has been spotted near the border of the Land of Fire and the Land of Waves. Many of them are missing-nin from Kirigakure. Ordinary genin squads can't handle them, so Lord Third has decided to send out some jōnin. I took one of the assignments."
After explaining, Kakashi added with a slight complaint, "I don't know why, but lately there's been an increase in rogue ninja from Kirigakure—and they're all pretty strong. A lot of nearby small nations have been overwhelmed and have sent distress signals to the village."
Douhuan laughed at that. Why else? Wasn't it thanks to his good friend stirring up a storm in Kirigakure?
"When do we leave?" Douhuan asked.
"In the morning. Meet at the village gate." Kakashi tossed him a mission scroll.
"Got it," Douhuan nodded, stashing the scroll as the two headed toward BBQ Q.
After an enjoyable feast, Douhuan returned home early to rest.
The next morning, Douhuan woke early, arranged work at the Police Force for the coming days, then brought his blade, Jirai, and made his way to the rendezvous point.
Unusually, Kakashi wasn't late this time, which meant Douhuan, who had to make a detour, ended up being the last to arrive.
This mission's squad included Douhuan and Kakashi as jōnin, with the rest being special jōnin—all of them civilians. So no one said anything when Douhuan arrived a bit late.
Once everyone had gathered, Kakashi filed the mission departure papers, and the team set off.
After half a day of travel, they reached a small town in the southeast corner of the Land of Fire.
Without needing Douhuan to step in, Kakashi arranged accommodations, meals, and even a stop in the entertainment district with surprising efficiency. Though he still needed work on giving formal speeches at banquets, Douhuan had to admit—Kakashi had started to learn the ways of politics.
The next day, the team moved on and soon reached the capital city of the Land of Waves. Following Douhuan's subtle signals, both he and Kakashi created shadow clones to lead the team on a tour of yesterday's "entertainment route." Meanwhile, their real bodies waited in hiding and emerged once the others were out of sight.
"So, where are we going this time?" Kakashi asked. Back in Tanzaku Town, Douhuan had vanished alone—Kakashi still didn't know what he'd done then.
Douhuan grinned as he removed the forehead protector from his left arm and tucked it away. What they were about to do… wasn't something they should be caught doing in official capacity.
Kakashi, seeing this, also removed his forehead protector, exposing his permanently active Sharingan. With a sigh, he grabbed some bandages from his medical kit and loosely wrapped it to cover the eye.
"You really look like that guy now…" Douhuan couldn't help but comment as Kakashi finished wrapping up. His mouth twitched.
Kakashi gave him an exasperated glare. "Maybe warn me ahead of time next time? If I'd known, I wouldn't have brought the forehead protector."
Douhuan burst out laughing, and after calming down, said, "Let's go make some real money."
He led Kakashi toward the luxurious outskirts of the city—the rich district of the Land of Waves. As they passed increasingly opulent buildings, Kakashi's expression grew more and more uneasy.
"Where are we going?" he finally asked.
"There." Douhuan pointed toward the grandest estate in sight—even among the rich district, it stood out. "The mansion of the Land of Waves' wealthiest man—known as the Black Gold Merchant, Cardo."
"We're going to sneak in, knock everyone out except the master of the house. Can you handle that?" Douhuan turned with a mischievous grin.
"…Hey now, that's not exactly legal." Kakashi frowned. While he had started adapting to politics, he was still a ninja at heart—and this crossed some serious lines.
But before he could protest further, Douhuan had already vanished.
Gritting his teeth, Kakashi had no choice but to follow.
With their combined abilities, Cardo's hired guards—on par with upper-level jōnin—stood no chance. Within minutes, the entire mansion was unconscious, and the two reunited at the door to Cardo's bedroom.
Inside, Cardo was sleeping soundly, holding a young girl in his arms. Kakashi looked at Douhuan and gestured—what now?
Douhuan smirked, leaned down, and gave Cardo a few light taps on the cheek.
Cardo opened his eyes groggily—only to find three crimson Sharingan eyes staring directly at him. He nearly screamed from the fright.
"Who's there?!" Cardo bolted upright, waking the girl beside him.
Just as she was about to scream, Kakashi silently cast a Genjutsu—knocking her out and wiping her short-term memory.
"You… who are you people?" Cardo now realized these men were hostile. He reached for a hidden alarm switch.
Thunk!
A throwing star embedded itself less than a centimeter from his fingertip, the edge so sharp it stung his skin. Cardo froze immediately.
"Mr. Cardo," Douhuan said pleasantly, "your entire mansion is asleep. You might still be awake, but if you make a scene, it'll get noisy. And I hate noise."
"…If it's money you want, we can talk," Cardo forced a smile. "There's a vault right over there—inside is one billion ryo in gold. You can take it. The code is 874591."
Smart man. Cardo had built his fortune surviving situations like this.
Kakashi checked the vault. As promised—it was all there.
