Chapter 12 - Don't You Feel The Heat?

Succubi Chapter 12. Don't You Feel The Heat?

I stepped out of the scanning room, letting out a slow exhale.

'House of Arcana, huh?'

I wasn't sure if that was the best choice, but it sure as hell beat being a glorified meat shield or getting stuck with Ares in House of Valor.

Now, I just had to deal with Leon's reaction.

I made my way toward the Academy's grocery shop, where I knew he and Evelyn were waiting.

It wasn't hard to find.

The shop was conveniently located near the main student plaza, filled with neat shelves stocked with basic necessities, fresh produce, and various snacks for students who preferred cooking their own meals instead of relying on the cafeteria.

The second I stepped inside, I spotted Leon standing in front of a shelf, holding a stack of snack packs and a few pre-made sandwiches.

Evelyn?

She was near the vegetable section, casually placing fresh produce into a basket like she was preparing for war.

Leon noticed me first.

"Yo!" he called out, grinning. "Took you long enough. Thought you got kidnapped."

I rolled my eyes. "Nope. Just had to confirm my existence with the Academy."

Leon snorted. "Yeah? So what's the verdict? Are you real?"

I smirked. "Unfortunately, yes."

Leon huffed a laugh before nodding toward the bag of snacks he was holding. "Figured I'd stock up. Can't trust cafeteria food all the time."

I looked at his stack of chips, sandwiches, and candy bars.

"Stock up?" I repeated. "That looks like a week's supply."

"Correction," Leon said, holding up a finger. "Three days."

Evelyn, who had been quietly filling her basket, finally turned toward us.

Except— I frowned, eyeing the sheer amount of groceries she was carrying.

Fruits, vegetables, fresh meat.

It looked like enough to feed an entire dorm.

I raised an eyebrow. "Uh, Evelyn? You good?"

She glanced at me, then at the groceries, then simply nodded.

"Lilith asked me to buy all of this," she said calmly.

Leon, who had just taken a sip from a bottled drink, nearly choked.

"Oh, right," he muttered. "I forgot even that nice, beautiful mentor is your dorm mother."

He groaned dramatically, rubbing his face. "This is not fair."

I ignored him, instead stepping forward and grabbing a few bags from Evelyn's hands.

"Here, I'll carry some."

She blinked, then nodded. "Thank you."

Leon squinted at me. "Since when have you been so helpful?"

I smirked. "Since she doesn't try to choke me out every time we shake hands."

Leon let out a bark of laughter. "Okay, yeah, that's fair."

As we walked toward the checkout area, Evelyn glanced at me.

"So," she said, "did they find anything wrong with your system?"

I shook my head. "Nope. System's fine. Apparently, I'm just a statistical error."

Leon raised an eyebrow. "You say that like it's normal."

I sighed. "Because at this point, it might as well be."

Evelyn gave me a pointed look. "Explain."

I shrugged. "Long story short? I'm what they call an anomaly. Meaning, I could technically fit into any House."

Leon blinked. "Wait, what?"

"Yeah," I muttered. "That's why my system freaked out. It couldn't classify me properly because I apparently fit every category."

Leon stared at me like I just told him I won the lottery.

"Bro. Do you know how unfair that is?"

I grinned. "Yeah, I know. That's why I picked House of Arcana."

Leon's face immediately dropped.

"…What."

I raised an eyebrow. "What?"

Leon gestured wildly. "Dude. You have sword skills. You're insanely good in close combat. You can use multiple weapons! How the hell did you end up in House of Arcana?!"

I smirked. "Because I didn't want to deal with Ares for the rest of my life?"

Leon blinked.

Then, with a slow, deep nod, he muttered, "Okay. Yeah. That makes sense."

Evelyn chuckled softly. "Arcana is a solid choice. You'll adapt quickly."

I shrugged. "Let's hope so."

We finished paying for our stuff and stepped out of the grocery store.

Leon stretched. "Alright, I'm heading back to my dorm. Gotta figure out how to hide my snacks before one of my house members tries to steal them."

I snorted. "Good luck with that."

Leon gave me a mock salute before heading off toward the male residential district.

Evelyn and I, on the other hand, walked in the opposite direction—toward Scarlet Rose Estate.

For a while, we were just quiet.

It wasn't awkward silence.

Just comfortable.

Evelyn wasn't really the talkative type, and honestly? After everything today, I didn't mind the quiet.

The sun was starting to set, casting warm golden light across the campus.

I glanced at Evelyn, who was walking beside me, holding the grocery bags like it was no big deal.

She was calm as ever, her expression unreadable. But something told me…

She was watching.

Always.

Observing.

I sighed, shifting my grip on the bags.

"You aren't a talkative type, huh?"

Evelyn barely reacted, but after a pause, she gave me a small nod.

"I feel weird sharing with a new person," she admitted. "Don't mind me."

I shrugged. "That's fair."

Another pause.

Then she glanced at me briefly. "You don't seem to mind silence."

I smirked. "That obvious?"

She nodded. "Most people try to fill it."

I exhaled through my nose, shifting the bags in my hands. "Yeah, well, after today? I'm fine with a little peace and quiet."

Evelyn hummed softly, as if she agreed.

Not long after, we finally reached the dorm.

The grand entrance of Scarlet Rose Estate stood before us, its architecture even more pronounced under the fading sunlight.

And this time?

Lilith was already there, waiting for us.

The moment we stepped inside, she greeted us with a warm smile.

"Welcome back," she said smoothly. "Right on time."

I raised an eyebrow. "You were expecting us?"

She chuckled. "Of course. You went shopping for groceries, after all."

Evelyn and I stepped further inside, placing the grocery bags onto the kitchen counter.

Lilith clapped her hands together. "Perfect. Now, I'll cook."

I blinked. "Only you?"

Lilith smiled. "Yes. I'll cook," she stated.

I frowned, glancing at the sheer amount of groceries we had just carried in.

"Uh," I muttered, rubbing the back of my neck, "you sure you don't need any help? That's a lot of food."

Lilith waved a hand. "I can handle it."

I raised an eyebrow. "Alone?"

She nodded. "Yes."

I looked at Evelyn for confirmation, but she was already stepping away.

"Okay," she said simply. "Excuse me, then."

Then, without another word, she left the room.

I frowned.

Something about this felt… off.

"Seriously," I muttered, turning back to Lilith. "I can help."

Lilith, still smiling, leaned slightly toward me.

"That's not necessary," she murmured. "I can handle this…" Then, in a lower, more teasing tone, she spoke. "Unless."

I narrowed my eyes. "Unless what?"

Her smirk widened as she leaned in even closer, her gaze flickering with something playful. "Unless that's just an excuse to spend more time with me," she whispered. Then, for the third time today, she winked.

I exhaled sharply. "Okay," I muttered, taking a step back. "I didn't mean it like that."

She paused for a moment, before she chuckled softly, tilting her head. "Mmm, if you say so."

I sighed. 'Why does every conversation with her feel like a trap?'

"Alright, alright," I muttered, lifting my hands in surrender. "I'll go back to my room, then. Feel free to ask if you actually need help."

I turned around, already preparing to leave. But just as I reached the door, she spoke again. "You…"

Lilith's voice shifted.

It was lower now—not teasing, not playful.

It was serious.

I hesitated, looking back at her.

Lilith was still standing in the same spot, but her expression had changed.

She was watching me closely.

"…Don't you feel anything?" she asked.

I frowned. "You mean hungry?"

Lilith's gaze didn't waver.

"No," she murmured. "I mean… heat inside you?"

I blinked.

'The hell?'

I stared at her, trying to figure out what she meant.

"Heat?" I repeated slowly.

I searched my body for any unusual sensation, but…

Nothing.

I just felt normal.

A little tired, maybe.

But nothing strange.

So, with complete honesty, I shook my head.

Lilith's eyes narrowed slightly.

Then, after a pause, her lips curled into a small, unreadable smile.

"I see," she murmured. "Okay. Go back to your room."

I hesitated for a second, still confused as hell.

But eventually, I just let it go and turned away.

"Something fishy…" I muttered.
