Chapter 41 - Totally Worth It

The second chapter of the day!

 -----

I rejoined the group as All Might finished explaining. "The distress signal will start in five minutes! Each team must navigate Ground Gamma and find me! No quirk restrictions, but do not cause unnecessary damage! Understood?"

Everyone nodded.

Bakugo scoffed. "Tch. I do not need five minutes."

"Then go run into a wall now and save us the trouble," I said.

His eye twitched, but All Might cut in. "Alright! First Team, get ready!"

Yaoyorozu, Mineta, Shoji, Sato, and Kaminari took their places. The rest of us waited at the back.

Kirishima put his arm on my shoulder. "Who do you think will win?"

"Not Mineta."

"Yeah, that's a given," Sero said.

"Hey! I'm quick when I need to be!" Mineta yelled.

"Yeah, to run away," Jiro said.

All Might's voice was heard. "On my mark… ready… GO!"

The first group launched into the maze. Yaoyorozu made a metal grappling hook and swung ahead. Shoji moved fast, climbing and using his extra arms to propel himself forward. Kaminari ran after them but immediately tripped over a pipe. Sato just powered through, smashing obstacles out of his way. Mineta tried bouncing on his sticky balls, but his foot stuck to a hole, and he fell on his face.

"Wow," I muttered. "He's already done."

"Give him a chance," Uraraka said.

We watched the screens as the group navigated the obstacles. Kaminari recovered and tried to catch up. Shoji used his reach to scale a platform. Yaoyorozu was ahead, swinging from the hook she made. Sato climbed up a stack of crates and jumped, covering a lot of ground. Mineta was still struggling, pulling his foot off the ground like an idiot.

Jiro shook her head. "I would feel bad for him if he didn't deserve it."

"Yaoyorozu got this," Tokoyami said.

"She's smart, but Shoji's moving fast," Todoroki added.

As expected, Yaoyorozu reached All Might first, Shoji right behind her. The rest of the group arrived a few seconds later. Mineta finally got his foot unstuck but immediately fell into a puddle.

All Might clapped. "Well done, young Yaoyorozu! And good effort to the rest of you!"

Mineta crawled out of the water. "This is rigged."

"Rigged against dumbasses," Jiro said.

"Next group, take your positions!" All Might called out.

Todoroki, Kirishima, Tokoyami, Ashido, and Aoyama stepped up.

Kirishima grinned. "I'm going all in."

"You better," Ashido said.

Todoroki cracked his knuckles. "This shouldn't take long."

"Confidence is good, but let us see if it holds up," Aoyama said, posing dramatically.

I sighed. "This dude's gonna blind himself with his own reflection."

The second group took off. Todoroki froze part of the ground and slid forward. Ashido used her acid to melt through obstacles while dodging smoothly. Kirishima charged through, breaking whatever was in his way. Tokoyami's Dark Shadow lifted him over obstacles. Aoyama fired his laser for extra momentum, but he miscalculated and shot himself into a wall.

"Nice," I said.

"He's gonna feel that tomorrow," Kaminari said.

Ashido flipped over a railing, landing smoothly. Todoroki created ice ramps, closing the distance. Kirishima used his hardened arms to climb up. Tokoyami's Dark Shadow grabbed a pole and swung him forward. Aoyama, now covered in dust, tried to catch up but tripped.

"Man is having the worst day," Sero said.

"You mean like every day?" I said.

Todoroki was the first to reach All Might. Ashido came in right after. Kirishima arrived next, then Tokoyami. Aoyama limped in last, holding his side dramatically.

All Might nodded. "Excellent work, young Todoroki!"

Todoroki crossed his arms. "It was expected."

Ashido pouted. "So close."

"Man, I thought I had it," Kirishima said.

"Same," Tokoyami added.

Aoyama sat on the ground. "I was… magnificent."

"Sure, man," Kaminari said.

All Might turned. "Next group! Get ready!"

Izuku, Iida, Jiro, Ojiro, and Hagakure stepped up.

Izuku stretched. "Okay, focus."

Iida adjusted his glasses. "Speed is key."

Ojiro cracked his neck. "Let's do this."

Jiro put her hands in her pockets. "Let's get this over with."

Hagakure, invisible as always, waved. "I'm here too!"

All Might called the start. "On my mark… GO!"

Iida took off immediately, his engines kicking in. Izuku followed, hopping over obstacles. Ojiro swung himself forward using his tail. Jiro used her earphone jacks to grab onto a pipe and pull herself ahead. Hagakure… was somewhere.

"Where is she?" Kaminari asked.

"Who knows," Yaoyorozu said.

Iida moved fast, avoiding obstacles. Izuku analyzed the route and took calculated jumps. Ojiro flipped over a ledge, landing smoothly. Jiro swung ahead, keeping a steady pace. Hagakure was still unseen.

Tokoyami hummed. "If no one can see her, does that mean she's winning?"

Izuku made a sharp turn, narrowly avoiding a falling crate. Iida was still ahead. Ojiro kept up, using his tail for balance. Jiro found a shortcut, cutting through. Then, out of nowhere, Hagakure reached All Might first.

"What?" I said.

The cameras zoomed in, showing All Might looking slightly startled as Hagakure waved in front of him. "Tada! I was here the whole time!"

"She really snuck through," Uraraka said.

"Guess invisibility has its perks," Kirishima added.

Iida arrived next, looking frustrated. "I did not see her at all!"

"No one did," Jiro said, landing beside him.

Izuku and Ojiro followed a second later.

All Might laughed. "Unexpected, but well done, young Hagakure!"

"Next group! Take your places!"

I rolled my shoulders. "Let's get this over with."

Bakugo cracked his neck. "Try to keep up, extras."

Uraraka stretched. "I'm ready."

Asui blinked. "Let's do this."

Sero grinned. "Finally, my turn."

All Might raised his hand. "On my mark… GO!"

Bakugo blasted forward immediately, ignoring the planned route. I sighed. "Of course."

Uraraka jumped up, using her quirk to stay light. Asui leaped from ledge to ledge. Sero shot his tape, swinging through. I ran forward, keeping my eyes on the best path.

I jumped onto a railing and used it to propel forward. "Hey, Bakugo, you're being reckless again."

"Shut the hell up!"

A pipe collapsed in front of him, and he barely dodged. I smirked. "Told you."

He growled. "I'll blow you up later!"

"Promises, promises."

Uraraka flipped over a platform. Asui landed smoothly beside her. Sero swung ahead, cutting the corner.

I picked up speed. "This is fun."

"Fun isn't the word I would use," Sero said.

We neared All Might's position. Bakugo was still ahead, but he was slowing down. I pushed forward, closing the gap. Uraraka moved quickly. Asui kept up. Sero swung wide.

Bakugo was ahead, but I spotted something useful up ahead—a pile of loose pipes stacked on a platform. They weren't secured properly, and the vibrations from Bakugo's explosions were shaking the structure.

Perfect.

I picked up my pace, making sure to step just right so the force of my landing rattled the already unstable pipes. They teetered for a moment before gravity did its job. The whole pile tumbled down just as Bakugo blasted past.

"Shit—!"

He barely managed to dodge, twisting midair to avoid getting clocked in the face. But the landing? Not so clean. His foot skidded on the loose debris, and he stumbled, nearly crashing into a railing.

"WHAT THE FUCK—?!"

"Wow, what an unfortunate accident," I called back, not even bothering to hide my grin.

"YOU DID THAT ON PURPOSE!"

"Me? Tampering with construction hazards? That sounds illegal."

Bakugo growled and tried to recover, but the delay was enough. Sero swung ahead, Uraraka flipped over him, Asui kept her pace, and I took the lead.

"DEAD MEAT, SHITHEAD!" Bakugo roared, forcing himself forward.

I didn't stop. The final stretch was close, and All Might's signal was just around the corner. I saw Sero gaining momentum with another tape swing, but his angle was too wide. He would have to land before closing the last gap. Uraraka had a clean approach, but she was just a step behind me. Asui leaped, aiming to land on the nearest platform.

I jumped.

Mid-air, I twisted my body, reaching for the ledge. My hand caught the edge, and I pulled myself up, sprinting toward All Might.

I tagged his shoulder. "Found you."

Uraraka landed a second later. "Damn it!"

Sero touched down right after. "You gotta be kidding me."

Asui blinked. "That was fast."

We all turned.

Bakugo stormed in, face locked in pure fury. He was last.

I put a hand over my chest. "Oh no. What a tragic fall from grace. Number Four has become… Number Five."

His eye twitched. "Shut the fuck up."

"Always spots down, man. That's rough."

"You think you're funny?!"

"Not at all. This is a serious situation. A national crisis."

Sero whistled. "Man, he really fell off."

Uraraka tried to hold in her laugh. "You'll get 'em next time?"

Asui nodded. "Ribbit."

Bakugo turned to All Might. "CALL IT AGAIN! WE'RE DOING A REMATCH!"

All Might rubbed the back of his neck. "Ah-ha, well, Young Bakugo, the point of the exercise is to adapt and—"

"REMATCH!"

"Um," All Might looked at the rest of us. "Any objections?"

I stretched. "Nah, I'm good. Pretty sure the scoreboard already locked in my win."

Uraraka grinned. "Yeah, I'm fine with my time."

Sero gave a thumbs-up. "I liked my placement."

Asui tilted her head. "I do not mind either."

Bakugo's hands sparked. "I'LL KILL YOU ALL."

All Might cleared his throat. "Now, now! No need for violence!" He patted Bakugo's shoulder. "Your performance was still excellent!"

Bakugo snarled. "I WAS LAST!"

"Yes, but! You, uh, displayed incredible—determination?"

"FUCK THAT!" Bakugo turned on me. "I KNOW YOU CAUSED THAT SHIT, MIDORIYA!"

I put my hands up. "Whoa now, let's not throw around accusations without proof."

"YOUR FACE IS PROOF!"

"That's just genetics."

"STOP SMILING!"

"Hard to, when you're making this so entertaining."

Bakugo took a step forward, but All Might grabbed his collar before he could lunge at me. "Young Bakugo! As much as I admire your passion, we must maintain proper decorum!"

Bakugo struggled. "LET ME GO!"

"Ah-ha, perhaps after you've calmed down!"

The rest of the class finally caught up, watching the scene unfold.

Kirishima grinned. "Damn, Bakugo, what happened?"

"SHUT UP!"

Mineta peeked over. "He fell again. Holy shit, I never thought I would see the day."

Jiro smirked. "And to Ryuu? That's gotta sting."

Todoroki crossed his arms. "Not his best performance."

Yaoyorozu nodded. "Perhaps he should have been more careful."

Bakugo looked like he was about to combust.

I patted his shoulder. "Look on the bright side, man. At least you weren't dead last, wait you are."

His glare could melt steel. "I WILL END YOU."

All Might still had him in a headlock. "Ha ha ha, well! That concludes today's training exercise! Excellent work, everyone!"

The class started packing up while Bakugo continued trying to murder me through sheer rage.

Sero nudged me. "Man, you really pushed his buttons."

I shrugged. "It's a gift."

Kaminari walked over. "That accident looked real convenient, huh?"

I grinned. "Wild, right? Almost like fate itself decided to humble him."

Bakugo was still fighting against All Might's grip. "I SWEAR TO GOD, MIDORIYA!"

I checked my System.
