Chapter 53 - Echoes of Victory

The train ride back to Misaki was quieter than expected.

Not silent—just… peaceful.

After the deafening cheers, the trophy lift, and the whirlwind of interviews, the stillness now felt earned. A kind of calm only found after weathering a storm.

Renji Takahashi sat by the window, forehead resting against the cool glass. The scenery passed in a blur of fading autumn hues and glints of city light. But in his mind, one image lingered—

The scoreboard flashing their win.

They'd done it. Misaki High had won regionals.

He let out a slow breath. Not too long ago, he couldn't even speak up during practice. Now, he'd been part of something unforgettable.

Across the aisle, Yuuto dozed with his arms crossed, a soft snore slipping past his lips. Asuka leaned lightly against Renji's shoulder, headphones in, her expression content.

Renji smiled to himself.

This was a moment he never wanted to forget.

A Hero's Welcome

The moment the team stepped off the bus, they were met with a wall of sound.

Students, teachers, even local shop owners crowded the school gates, cheering with banners and confetti poppers. Phones were held high. Reporters lined the sidewalk. For a split second, Renji froze under the weight of so many eyes.

Then he felt a hand slip into his.

Asuka's.

She squeezed gently, grounding him.

Yuuto stepped forward, raising the trophy high above his head. "WE'RE GOING TO STATE!" he shouted, and the crowd erupted again.

Renji couldn't help but laugh. Not because of the noise—but because in that moment, he realized something:

He wasn't afraid of being seen anymore.

New Pressure

Later that night, after the excitement had settled, the team gathered in the empty gym.

Their coach stood at the center, arms crossed, expression unreadable.

"You all did well," he said at last. "But make no mistake—this was just one peak."

He glanced around at the team, letting his words settle. "State-level competition will be nothing like regionals. The teams you'll face have been training for this their whole lives. So celebrate tonight."

Then came the twist.

"Because tomorrow, we start over."

Silence. Then—

"Bring it on," Yuuto said, his voice firm.

The team echoed with nods and murmured agreements. Even Renji found himself clenching a fist by his side.

The glory was still fresh.

But the hunger for more?

That was already building.

Quiet Reflections

Renji stayed behind after practice, walking the length of the gym with slow, thoughtful steps.

The polished floor still held the faint scuffs from their last match. He knelt down, running his hand along the center line, the very place where he'd made that game-saving dive.

His chest tightened—not with anxiety, but anticipation.

The fear that once gripped him had given way to something stronger.

Resolve.

Asuka watched from the doorway, arms folded, smiling softly.

"You're thinking again," she said.

Renji turned, a sheepish grin on his face. "Maybe a little."

She walked over and sat beside him. "We're really going to state, huh?"

"Yeah," he whispered. "We are."

Their fingers brushed.

For a moment, nothing needed to be said.

They were no longer just chasing something.

They were becoming something.
