Chapter 17 - you are not strong enough (chapter 17)

Chapter 17

"You're durable," Levi said almost absently, watching her work. "But you'll need more than claws if you want to break my magic." He raised his hand again, the light of his shield casting sharp shadows across his face. "Oh magic, let the storm rise — Tempest Lance!" A spear of crackling blue lightning burst into existence, spinning above his palm. With a sharp motion, he hurled it forward. The air shrieked as the bolt tore toward Carmilla, too fast for the eye to follow. She twisted aside, but the spear grazed her shoulder — the resulting explosion sent her flying, crashing through the trunk of a massive tree. Wood splintered and collapsed around her, branches falling like spears.

Carmilla emerged from the wreckage with a snarl, her eyes burning red. "You think this is enough to defeat me?" she hissed, and then she moved. She crossed the distance between them in a heartbeat, her form blurring with speed — but Levi was faster. "Oh magic, let the ground obey" The earth beneath Carmilla's feet buckled and rose, massive stone hands erupting upward to seize her. She dodged the first with an acrobatic flip, slicing through the second with her nails — but the third caught her ankle, slamming her into the ground with enough force to create a crater. Dust rose in thick clouds, but she was already moving again, her dress torn and stained with dirt.

She retaliated with magic of her own. Black mist coiled around her hands, and with a whisper of power, it surged toward Levi — a swarm of shadowy tendrils that twisted and lashed like whips. They struck the honeycomb shield with vicious force, their touch hissing and eating away at the light, but the barrier held. Levi's eyes gleamed. "Oh magic, burn with the sun's fury" A sphere of white-hot fire blossomed above his palm, pulsing with blinding heat. He launched it forward, and when it struck the mist, the resulting explosion was like a miniature sun. Flames roared outward, scorching the earth black and forcing Carmilla to retreat with a hiss of pain.

The fight had shifted. Carmilla was fast, powerful — stronger than any vampire Levi had faced besides Dracula — but his magic was overwhelming. Despite the devastation his spells caused, his mana pool remained steady, his simple cube-shaped core only half depleted. Another spell formed at his fingertips. "Oh magic, let the wind cut " Razor-thin arcs of air slashed toward Carmilla, carving deep gouges into the ground where they passed. She dodged, but one caught her arm, drawing a line of crimson. Snarling, she lunged forward again — but this time, it was clear. Levi had the advantage.

Carmilla's eyes glinted with sudden, dangerous focus. Without a word, she reached behind her back — and when her hand reappeared, it held a sword. The blade was a deep, blood-red, almost pulsing as though alive, and its edge gleamed with a cruel sharpness. She moved before Levi could react, and in the blink of an eye, she was upon him. The sword flashed — a scarlet arc of death — and Levi barely raised his shield in time. The honeycomb barrier shuddered violently as the sword struck, a high-pitched screech echoing through the air. The force of the blow cracked the ground beneath them, sending a ripple through the earth. Carmilla didn't stop. She flowed around him like a tempest, the sword a blur of crimson light as she attacked from every direction. Each strike landed with explosive force, and for the first time, Levi's shield began to show cracks.

"Impressive," Levi muttered, his eyes flicking between her movements. "But not enough." He stepped back, raising his hands. "Oh magic, let the waters rise" From the forest floor, water exploded upward, a roaring geyser that shot toward Carmilla with crushing force. She leaped back, flipping midair as the surge slammed into a tree behind her, snapping it like a twig. Before she could land, Levi was already casting again. "Oh magic, let the shadows dance" The darkness around them stretched and writhed, forming inky tendrils that lashed toward her. She spun with grace, her sword flashing as she sliced through the shadows, but they kept coming. One wrapped around her ankle, and for a moment, her movement halted. It was enough.

"Oh magic, let gravity fall !" The air around Carmilla grew heavy. The ground beneath her cracked as an invisible weight pressed down, forcing her knees to bend. Snarling, she slashed at the shadows again, severing them before they could fully restrain her. With a burst of speed, she broke free — but Levi was waiting. "Oh magic, let nature's wrath bloom — Thorn Barrage!" The forest around them answered his call. Vines and branches erupted from the earth and trees, snapping toward Carmilla like a storm of spears. She weaved between them, her sword a blur as she cut through the onslaught, but the sheer number overwhelmed even her. A thick vine wrapped around her wrist, dragging her down as thorns raked across her skin, drawing thin lines of blood.

But Carmilla was not so easily defeated. With a hiss of frustration, she raised her sword high — and when she swung it down, a wave of crimson energy erupted from the blade. It tore through the vines and branches, scorching the ground and splitting the earth. Levi's eyes widened as the attack crashed into his shield — and this time, it shattered. Before he could react, she was on him. The sword flashed, and pain blossomed on his left cheek as the blade sliced a thin, burning line across his skin. "Got you," Carmilla whispered, her lips curling into a victorious smile.

But Levi only smiled back. "Oh magic, burn with creation's light — Solflare Core." In his palm, a tiny sun ignited. It was no larger than a coin — smaller even than the fireballs he had thrown before — but the heat it radiated was immeasurable. The air around it shimmered, and the grass beneath it blackened and curled. Carmilla's eyes widened in sudden understanding — but it was too late. Levi thrust his hand forward, and the miniature sun shot toward her. It struck her chest — and in an instant, her scream filled the forest. The light consumed her, searing through her flesh and bone. She fought it, even then — slashing wildly with her sword, trying to step forward — but the heat was relentless. Her skin blistered, her body crumbling into ash even as she reached for him.

When the light finally faded, only a charred imprint remained on the ground where she had stood. Levi exhaled slowly, wiping the blood from his cheek. "You were strong," he murmured, gazing at the ashes. "But not strong enough." He glanced around the ruined clearing, scorched trees and shattered ground bearing witness to their battle. With a flick of his hand and a quiet incantation, the destruction began to reverse. Grass regrew, trees stood tall once more, and the air cooled, erasing the traces of fire and devastation. Satisfied, Levi sat down on a nearby rock, pulling out his book. He flipped it open with a smile, as if he hadn't just annihilated one of the most powerful vampires on the continent. The blood on his cheek dried and flaked away as he became absorbed in his reading, quietly draining his remaining mana into recovery and relaxation.
