Chapter 149 - 149. Road to death

Kamu woke up on the floor of the Mist headquarters, holding his head. A multitude of strange images were swirling in his head. He couldn't place the events of the past, he didn't know how long. Everything was so blurry. In fact, he didn't even remember what happened to him before this vision-like thing started.

"Ah, Kamu! Finally, you woke up!" Ajtony appeared in the door and hurried to his friend to help him up from the ground.

"How long did I sleep?" The leader of the Mist asked, still holding his head and shaking it a little, hoping that the memories would come back to him.

"Two days." The man who was Kamu's right-hand man shrugged.

"I've been lying here for two days and you didn't think something was wrong?" He looked at Ajtony with narrowed eyes, who just spread his hands.

"You sometimes fall asleep for a whole day. That's just a you thing. I thought you had a good reason for it." The assassin waved, and Kamu grimaced.

"Thanks! So I could die for all you care, no one would care if I didn't move for two weeks." The leader of the Mist grumbled under his breath, but his right hand laughed.

"But, Kamu. After a week, I would stick a dagger in your side to see if you were alive?" Ajtony grinned with that crazy smile that even the idiot knew didn't mean anything good.

"Please spare me." Kamu chuckled, then squeezed his neck. "Did you collect what I asked for?" He asked a few minutes later, when he was free from the pain in his neck.

"Of course, although I still don't understand why I had to collect all the Mist's papers, but the task is the task. Even if I would rather deal with my poisons, but one can only dream." Ajtony explained as he walked over to the table next to the wall and began arranging the papers on it.

"I have good reason." Kamu announced, then sighed heavily and took a piece of paper from his inside pocket, which he handed to his friend, who looked at him suspiciously.

"What is this?" The poison mixer of the Mist asked.

"Precaution." Kamu announced, then nudged his friend in the side. "If you or I accidentally decide to take a dirt nap while working. We can't just let the Mist dissipate, can we?" He grinned at Ajtony, whereupon the other laughed and put the piece of paper in his pocket.

"You're an idiot, Kamu!" He patted him on the shoulder. "Come on, I'll show you the new recruits. They're quite promising, although I don't know how long the little guy will last." He thought about it.

"If you don't give him poison, probably for a long time." Kamu chuckled, earning himself a slap in the face.

After the conversation, the leader of the Mist tried to enjoy every moment he could spend with his team, that is, his new family. He didn't have much time left. He planned to complete the task for that weekend and even before the fainting incident, he sent a hawk to Kele that he wanted to visit him that weekend.

He had no time to waste, and he tried to make the most of his last days. To talk to everyone, to visit the places that his best friend loved. In fact, he even tried to summon Teike several times to say goodbye to the ghost, just as his father said goodbye to him when he got tired of teasing his younger brother, but the ghost of the Teike ancestor never appeared to him. So he finally gave up on the matter.

When the time came for him to leave, when he left the seat of the Mist for the last time, Kamu left just as he had always done before. He didn't say goodbye to anyone, he didn't say anything to anyone, he was just like he always did. A shadow. And this shadow hurried to the territory of the Koál tribe to meet his relatives for the last time in his life.

His siblings and Kele's wife, Emese, awaited him with open arms and smiles. Kamu was surprised that his sister didn't show any grief. The experience of killing his younger brother, Laik, was still fresh in Kamu's eyes. Keche, on the other hand, looked like a woman who had been widowed for years and could only smile at the love of young people.

Kamu tried to do everything the same as he did on every normal meeting they had. He played with his two nephews and his niece, Kele's daughter. He talked to Emese and Keche, and they joked with Kele. Together they remembered Kele's friends who had died recently, told stories about their youth. And other similar things.

Then the big day came. The last day of Kamu and Kele's lives. The siblings had planned to go fishing that day. In the morning, when they set off, Kamu's hard resolve trembled, as he hugged his sister a little tighter and a little longer than he should, silently saying goodbye to the girl. Knowing that he would never see her again in his lifetime.

The twins took the paths and went fishing to a small lake, thanks to the season, fog dotted the water, but they didn't care. They got into a boat and threw their hooks into the water in a quieter, more secluded place on the lake. The hours passed silently, they even caught a few fish. Everything was perfectly ordinary, like that certain silence before a storm. Kamu waited for as long as he could. Who wouldn't want to enjoy the last minutes with their brother?

"Do you remember? Our first father taught us to use our family ability in a place like this." Kamu finally started, when the sun was already setting and he was afraid that Kele would leave for home, lest he arrive too late.

"Yes, I remember. We always raced to the other side of the lake." Kele chuckled. "I can't wait to teach my son how to use the Teike ability." The older twin said enthusiastically, but at his words Kamu's hand tightened on the rod he was holding and he even narrowed his eyes. He had never had such a difficult task.

"I'm sorry." He muttered under his breath, but his brother didn't hear him thanks to another bite. Kele happily pulled the fish into the boat and proudly lowered it into the bucket with the others, when Kamu also pulled in his rod.

"I think that's enough for now." Kele said, nodding. "Kamu, are you okay?" He tilted his head to the side when he saw his brother's eyes, which were sparkling with tears.

"You know that I love you both very much, right?" He asked in a trembling voice.

"Of course! We love you very much too, brother." Kele suddenly hugged Kamu, and Kamu, who had now grown into a man, swallowed hard.

"I hope you will forgive me one day, brother." He hugged Kele to him as he swung straight into the water and started swimming downward, as far as possible. His brother began to thrash and try to escape, but the pressure on their chests slowly grew greater and greater until they were forced to take another breath. However, instead of air, water filled their lungs. Kamu's muscles relaxed, and he let go of his brother.

The Teikes know from the first moment they use their ability how they will die, but they are not afraid of death, rather they welcome it with open arms when the time comes. Kamu and Kele always knew that the last thing they would see would be the light filtering through the colorful fish on the bottom of a lake. Kamu never believed that when his last moment will came, it would be so beautiful. Then Kamu's heart stopped and the Mist evaporated from the surface of the water, leaving nothing but a boat silently moving on the water, with the Teike twins sleeping in a watery grave.
