Chapter 6: A World That Watches

---

The Rumors Begin

Montana had always been quiet. A place where people kept to themselves, where news moved slower than the wind across the plains.

But lately, whispers had begun to spread.

It started with the frozen lake.

A girl had fallen through the ice, and before anyone could react, she was saved by something—or someone. The details were hazy. Some said it was a man, others claimed it was a force of nature.

And then came the stories from across the state.

A car accident, where a truck had nearly flipped, only to be righted at the last second by an invisible force. A barn collapse, where an old man swore he had been lifted to safety by something too fast to see.

Little things.

But things that didn't make sense.

People noticed.

And some of those people worked for SHIELD.

Nick Fury Takes Notice

At SHIELD headquarters, Director Nick Fury sat in his office, flipping through a thick stack of reports.

Missing persons. Unexplained rescues. Distorted security footage.

All of it led back to one place—Montana.

And one person.

Ethan Carter.

The name didn't mean much on paper. Just a young man from Fairview, Montana. Adopted, raised on a farm. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Except that it was.

Fury set the file down and looked at the grainy image on his monitor. A security camera from a gas station had captured a blurry figure walking past at dusk. Nothing special—until you zoomed in.

Until you realized the camera hadn't captured him clearly at all.

It had glitched.

Like something had distorted the image.

Fury leaned back in his chair, his one eye narrowing.

People didn't just disappear from video footage. And they didn't just happen to be at the center of every strange occurrence in a hundred-mile radius.

Something was going on.

And he was going to find out what.

Ethan's Decision

Ethan Carter stood on the edge of his family's farmland, staring out at the vast horizon.

His hands clenched at his sides.

He had tried to keep his head down. To stay unnoticed.

But it wasn't working.

People were talking. Watching. SHIELD, the government—someone was bound to come knocking soon.

He needed to understand who he was before they did.

He thought back to the dreams. The voices that had whispered to him in a language he didn't understand. The feeling deep inside him, telling him there was something more.

Something waiting for him.

Somewhere.

His mind drifted to the pull he had always felt—the strange sense that something was buried in the ice, calling to him.

For years, he had ignored it. Convinced himself it was nothing.

But he knew better now.

He had to find it.

Had to know the truth.

He took a deep breath, glancing back toward the farmhouse. He could hear his parents inside, moving about, laughing softly as they spoke.

They had given him everything.

But they couldn't give him answers.

This was something he had to do alone.

Ethan turned toward the north.

Toward Antarctica.

And with a single step, he disappeared into the sky.

A Shadow Watches

Not far away, hidden in the darkness of an unmarked vehicle, a man lowered his binoculars.

He had been watching the Carter farm for days, ever since SHIELD had flagged Ethan as a person of interest.

He had expected to see something unusual.

But he hadn't expected this.

One second, Ethan had been standing there. The next—gone.

No aircraft. No vehicle.

Just… vanished.

The agent exhaled sharply, grabbing his radio.

"Sir," he said, voice tight. "We have a problem."

On the other end of the line, a single voice replied.

We lost the target..
