"I'm Ruby, and this is my father," she said, gesturing towards the older man beside her. "I lost my mum a couple of years ago, so it's just been us."
A pang of empathy tugged at my heart. "I'm sorry to hear that," I said softly, and we continued to talk, our conversation weaving a fragile bond between us. She shared stories of her village and its vibrant culture, painting pictures of lively gatherings and self-sustaining beauty.
After what felt like an hour or more of walking on the rugged path, we arrived at a village nestled in a lush valley. The atmosphere was welcoming; villagers greeted us with warm smiles, their kindness wrapping around me like a comforting blanket.
Ruby led Liam away, skillfully guiding him to a makeshift clinic where his wounds could be cleaned and cared for.
"Don't worry, Kyaa; your boyfriend is safe with them," Ruby teased, a playful glint in her eyes. Heat rushed to my cheeks at her words, and I stammered, "He's… he's not… my boyfriend… We're just friends!"
"Really?" Ruby raised an eyebrow, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "I see the way you look at him." Embarrassment flickered through me, and I turned away, a defiant scoff escaping my lips. "Whatever!"
Feeling the weight of exhaustion settle upon me, I wandered into one of the simple yet cosy rooms. I barely had time to sink into the soft bedding before sleep enveloped me like a soothing tide, drawing me under.
