Chapter 10 - BOLD MOVE

The weeks passed, and Vanessa's presence continued to loom like a dark cloud hanging over Clara and Emmanuel. Despite Clara's increasing discomfort, Emmanuel continued to insist that his friendship with Vanessa was harmless, but Clara's doubts only deepened.

It was late one evening when the situation took a turn. Clara and Emmanuel were having dinner at a small café, enjoying a rare moment of peace. But as they spoke, Clara's phone buzzed. It was a message from Emmanuel.

Vanessa wants to meet up. She's in town again.

Clara's eyes narrowed. She felt the familiar knot in her stomach tighten.

"Emmanuel," she started, her voice calm but with an edge, "how many times has she texted you this week? Are you seeing her again tonight?"

Emmanuel hesitated, the words hanging in the air like a heavy weight. He glanced at his phone, his fingers gripping it nervously. "It's just a quick thing. She wants to catch up about work stuff. I told you, it's nothing to worry about."

Clara looked into his eyes, searching for any hint of truth. "Does she always come first? Even when we're spending time together?"

He opened his mouth to respond, but before he could, a shadow crossed the doorway.

Vanessa stood there, her eyes glinting in the dim light of the café. She had entered unnoticed, her confident posture drawing attention from those around her. Clara's breath caught in her throat as Vanessa walked toward their table, a slight smirk playing on her lips.

"Am I interrupting?" Vanessa's voice was smooth, almost too smooth.

Clara stood up, unable to hide her frustration. "We were having a conversation," she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

Vanessa didn't acknowledge Clara's tone. Instead, she leaned toward Emmanuel, her hand resting on his shoulder, a gesture that felt too familiar. "It's been too long since we've caught up, hasn't it?"

Emmanuel shifted uncomfortably, caught in the middle. "I told Clara I'd be here, Vanessa."

"Oh, I know," Vanessa replied softly, her eyes never leaving his. "But you didn't tell me you'd be here with her."

There was a sharpness in her words that Clara couldn't ignore. It wasn't just casual; it was deliberate. She felt her heart tighten.

Vanessa sat down beside Emmanuel without waiting for permission, her gaze still locked onto him. Clara could feel the tension thickening between them, the silence stretching on until it became unbearable.

Clara took a deep breath and turned to Emmanuel, her voice low but steady. "I don't think this is the right time for you two to be talking."

Emmanuel finally looked at her, guilt flashing across his face. "Clara, don't do this."

But Vanessa cut him off with a cold laugh, her eyes gleaming with something darker. "Oh, please. Don't act like she doesn't already know. We're close and text everyday Emmanuel. She can't change that."

Clara's chest tightened. "You're not just friends, are you?"

Vanessa tilted her head slightly, her smile widening. "What difference does it make? He's mine too, in a way."

The words hit Clara like a slap. Emmanuel's eyes widened, and he opened his mouth to speak, but Vanessa silenced him with a sharp look. "Let's not pretend, Emmanuel. The truth is, we've always had this unspoken connection, haven't we? It's not something you can just ignore."

Clara could feel her breath quicken, her heart racing. She had heard enough. Without another word, she stood up, her chair scraping against the floor. "I can't do this anymore," she said, her voice trembling with a mixture of anger and heartbreak. "I won't be your second choice."

She turned and walked out of the café, the door slamming behind her. Emmanuel called after her, but Vanessa's hand on his arm stopped him from following.

"She'll come back," Vanessa said, her tone confident. "Just give her time."

The next few days were a blur of confusion and frustration for Clara. She couldn't shake the images of Vanessa and Emmanuel together, their chemistry so undeniable, so unsettling. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Vanessa's smirk, the way she had casually made her presence felt, almost as if she were claiming him for herself.

Clara's mind raced, her insecurities growing stronger. Was Vanessa right? Had there always been something more between them? She knew Emmanuel cared for her, but was it enough to keep him from drifting back into Vanessa's orbit?

She finally couldn't take it anymore. Clara knew she had to confront him once and for all—no more second guesses, no more avoiding the truth.

Emmanuel's phone rang late that evening. He answered, his voice tight with apprehension.

"Clara?" he said softly, hearing the strain in her tone. "I didn't want it to be like this. You know I care about you."

Clara stood on the other side of the line, her emotions raw. "Do you? Or do you care more about her?"

There was a long pause. "It's not like that," Emmanuel said finally, his voice breaking. "But she's also my friend , Clara. I can't just cut her off. It's... complicated."

"Complicated?" Clara laughed bitterly. "It shouldn't be. I shouldn't have to compete with her for your attention."

Emmanuel's silence was the final blow. Clara hung up the phone, tears welling in her eyes.

The next time Clara saw Emmanuel, she wasn't sure what to expect. Would he fight for their relationship? Or had Vanessa finally pulled him away completely?

She didn't know, but she wasn't ready to wait around and find out.
