Chapter 2 - Suspiciouns

It had been a relatively normal night for Officer Matthew McKinnon. He only had to do a normal traffic stop. All went well and the night was a quiet one.

At 3:40am, Officer McKinnon was eating a small late-night snack when the dispatcher sounded over the radio, dispatching him to a distressed young man calling about a body with a massive hole in his chest.

He immediately got into his police car and started driving to the location, with his police lights on and sirens blaring. It took him quite a while to get there, even though he was the nearest officer available.

Once there, he saw a semi-truck sitting halfway on the road with its warning lights on. A young man was directly in front of the car wearing a very old-looking warning vest. He was talking to someone on the phone, which Officer McKinnon speculated to be the dispatcher.

Suddenly his police lights stopped working. He was confused at first, but after turning them off and on again they started working again a little later. Officer McKinnon then made for himself a small sticky note to remind him that he should have them checked out because he couldn't go around doing his police duties with malfunctioning police lights.

As He got out of the car, he immediately surveyed his surroundings and then walked toward the trembling man. He then put his phone away and greeted him politely while pointing one of his shaking fingers towards the direction where his headlights were shining "H-hello Sir, th-the body is over there.".

Officer McKinnon nodded and took out his flashlight, shining it in the direction that the man had pointed in. It wasn't hard to locate the body, with a large pool of blood nearly in the middle of the road and a trail of blood going into the woods to the right.

Looking at the body nearly made the Officer gag, he had seen a lot of bad things, but he couldn't ever really make this feeling of disgust go away in these situations.

After looking at the body a little closer, he was amazed at the huge hole in the man's chest. Officer McKinnon could have put his balled fist into the hole and there still would have been room.

What perplexed the officer was what could have caused such a hole. The entrance was way too jagged to have been done by a rod or pole. It puzzled Matthew, he had never seen anything close to this. In an accident that he had responded to, there had been a man impaled in the stomach by a traffic pole and that looked gruesome, but not like this.

In that incident, the man had been impaled in the stomach and by the very end of the traffic pole. This, on the other hand, didn't really fit into the category of man-made objects or weapons, maybe a makeshift stone spear, if you didn't account for the size of the hole.

Sirens could be heard in the distance, which were likely from the backup officer he had requested a while ago. A little relief washed over him, maybe that nagging feeling of getting watched would then finally go away.

Suddenly without warning all the lights stopped working, his flashlight, the street lamps, the lights on the cars and even the phone screen of the guy who called the police stopped working. He whacked his flashlight against his hand a few times in hopes of getting it working again, but it didn't help.

"O-Officer, w-what is ha-happening?" the scared man asked as everything had gone dark. Then yelped in fear as he accidentally bumped into his own car, while the sirens got louder and louder.

"Everything will be fine." Officer Matthew McKinnon responded, unsure himself what was happening, whilst taking out his gun and trying to use the flashlight he had mounted to it.

As that didn't work, he said, "Hey, talk to me, so that I can find the road again.". As someone could have put him in a room without a window and Matthew could have seen better than right now.

"O-Okay officer, I-I am over here. I'm standing directly next to my car." The man responded loudly in a scared tone. It made locating the direction he needed to go in easier and Matthew was thankful that the other officer would be here shortly. Then he heard it.

crack

It was a sickening crack, like bones breaking. The sound made a chill run down his spine. Matthew immediately assumed the worst and called out, "Hey! Where are you? Say something!". Getting no immediate answer made him panic and it made him feel like he had been doused in ice water. The feeling of getting watched was gone, but that didn't make him feel any better, only worse.

For a moment he could see the lights of the incoming police car, but then they also flickered and stopped working. The tires screeched as the officer tried making an emergency stop.

boom

What followed the sonic boom were the sounds of glass and bones breaking and a car that started crashing uncontrolled. The police car rolled on its side, before coming to a halt by crashing into a big tree on the other side of the road. The engine caught fire in the process.

Officer McKinnon could stare in shock and disbelief, as the small flickering flame revealed a monster that he thought only existed in fiction.

It was maybe taller than two police cars stacked on top of each other and looked like a muscular cat in a completely dark coat. With its sharp teeth burrowed deep into the neck of the dead body that belonged to the man who had called the police, it slowly clipped its tail end back onto the big spike, that must have killed the other man, now lodged deep into the police car and the chest of his backup officer.

A small forceful tug of the creature was enough to rip the spike out of the officer's chest and front window. The murderous purple locked onto Matthew. He fell on his behind, scrambling backward in hopes of getting away, his eyes never leaving the monster. Soon though, his back hit a tree and before he could do anything

twack

His chest was impaled like the others. "Ahh, fu..." was the only thing he could mutter as the light escaped his eyes and the flame went out.

5:30 am

"Is every requested Field Agent present?" asks a middle-aged man with a pencil mustache. Standing in front of the electronic whiteboard he looks over the 12 seated field agents before him and then to the young man in a lab coat next to the door.

The young Research Assistant answers after overlooking the group, "Yes sir, all requested staff are present."

"Ok, I'll start the briefing then. My name is Michael Brown and I am the assigned mission supervisor for the recovery of Field Agent Elias Simmons. He has been declared MIA along with two other civilians, after being dispatched as a backup officer to a call about a dead man with a massive hole in his chest.

All contact ceased upon reaching the target location at 4:45 am." He said while switching the screen of the whiteboard to a satellite image of the location and a photo of the agent in the corner.

"Your objective is to retrieve Agent Simmons and document any suspicious or anomalous things you find. Multiple Agents in the local police force have already locked down access to the road. Any questions" the supervisor continued.

After having gone through the folder on Agent Simmons, Agent Miller asked, "Do we have any Info on the missing civilians and what should we do with them?"

"Ah yes, all civilians found in the area are to be administered Class A amnestics after being escorted out of the locked down area. The known missing civilians are Officer Matthew McKinnon, who responded to the call first, as well as the caller, who was identified as David Morris."

"Any more questions?" the supervisor, Michael Brown, asked one last time. "Then, I will leave you to prepare"
