Chapter 28 - Chapter 28 ⭃ Lumos, The Wand-Lighting Charm

Regarding Cho Chang, Cedric's future girlfriend and Harry Potter's crush, Kyle didn't know much and had never interacted with her. The only thing he knew was that she was in Ravenclaw.

But now he had learned one more thing about her — she was helpful. Not every Ravenclaw would actively help others; many preferred to be immersed in their own world, thinking about academics or other matters.

Of course, this doesn't mean Ravenclaws are cold; it's just a difference in personality. If someone asked them for help, Ravenclaws were quite willing to provide assistance.

Simply put: they weren't proactive, but they weren't unhelpful either.

Cho Chang was talking with her friends nearby, so Kyle just glanced at her before looking away.

"This is only the first class, what are we going to do in the future? We can't leave an hour early every time." Michael said beside him, grabbing his hair in frustration, "At this rate, I'm definitely going to be late someday."

"Don't worry, Hogwarts professors won't expel students for being late, they'll just deduct some points at most." Kyle patted his shoulder reassuringly, "By the way, I've got something good to show you guys."

"Something good?" Michael and Ryan leaned in curiously.

Kyle took out the map and spread it on the table, "Thank Cedric, otherwise you guys would've been lost for quite a while."

"Is this... a map of Hogwarts?"

While Michael was still wondering what it was, Ryan, who had a wizard father, recognized it immediately and exclaimed excitedly, "Where did you get it? Can I copy it? I promise I'll return it after class."

"Of course, we're roommates after all!" Kyle nodded, then turned to Michael, "What about you? Do you want to copy it?"

Michael was tempted but eventually shook his head. As someone entering the wizarding world for the first time, he didn't want to waste any opportunity to learn magic, especially not during Charms class, which was so crucial.

"Can I copy it after class?" He asked.

"Sure, no problem." Kyle nodded, then lightly tapped his wand on the map.

The spell complete, an identical map instantly appeared on the table. He picked it up, checked it, and then handed it to Michael.

"This is for you. The magic should last about a week, so you can copy it whenever you want."

"???" Michael took the map in confusion, then instinctively turned to look at an equally confused Ryan.

Ryan was completely stunned, looking from Kyle to the parchment in front of him, his face burning with embarrassment. Just as he was about to say something, a voice suddenly came from in front of them.

"Excellent Duplication Charm, five points to Hufflepuff!"

Kyle was startled and looked up, but only saw Cho Chang across from him. Looking more carefully, he realized there was another person standing in front of the desk.

The person was quite short, not even as tall as the desk, completely hidden behind it.

"Thank you for your praise, Professor Flitwick." He said.

Flitwick smiled and said, "I'm just stating the facts, Mr. Chopper. That is your name, right?"

Kyle nodded, "Yes, Professor."

"It seems my memory is still good." Professor Filius Flitwick turned to Michael, "May I see that map?"

At first, Michael didn't recognize the small wizard in front of him, but he quickly recalled Kyle's address and hurriedly handed over the map with both hands.

"Y-yes, Professor."

"Thank you."

Flitwick took the map, carefully examined it, then returned it to Michael.

"Oh, the magic is very stable. If nothing unexpected happens, this copy should last until noon eight days from now." He winked at Kyle and said with a slightly regretful tone, "If the end-of-term exam were on the Duplication Charm, I would definitely give you an O (Outstanding), but for now, I can only award Hufflepuff another three points."

{T/N: Outstanding is the highest grade possible for any wizard exam.}

"Professor!" At this moment, a small Ravenclaw witch asked curiously, "Can't objects created with the Duplication Charm exist permanently?"

"No, they cannot, Miss Mittal." Flitwick replied, "If duplicates could exist permanently, there wouldn't be so much parchment in Scrivenshaft's windows."

"Not even for Dumbledore?" Another young wizard asked.

"I'm afraid not." Flitwick shook his head and continued, "Even if the Headmaster could make his duplicates last for a hundred years or longer, they still wouldn't exist forever. Well, that's enough about the Duplication Charm for now; it's too advanced for you at this stage. Let's begin our lesson."

He turned and walked up to the podium, facing all the young wizards.

"Today we will learn the Wand-Lighting Charm, one of the most basic charms. The incantation is 'Lumos'. Watch carefully..."

Learning the Wand-Lighting Charm in the first Charms class wasn't surprising to Kyle, as it was considered the simplest and most straightforward spell in the wizarding world.

There was no need to worry about hand gestures; as long as you were a wizard, had a wand, and could speak, you could definitely cast it.

In earlier times, the Wand-Lighting Charm was even used to distinguish wizards from Squibs, with an accuracy rate of nearly 100%. It could be said that if someone couldn't perform the Wand-Lighting Charm, they definitely weren't a wizard.

{T/N: Remember that Squibs are humans who have a Wizard parent, but did not inherit the gene.}

Given this, Flitwick simply demonstrated the Charm once before letting the young wizards try it themselves.

Soon, the classroom was filled with small points of light — some large, some small, some bright, some dim...

Kyle wasn't the first to succeed, but the light from his wand was stable. Just like an electric light bulb, it continuously emitted a consistent, soft white glow.

Unfortunately, he didn't earn any points this time. That was because he wasn't the only one who could make his wand emit stable light; in Ravenclaw, seven young wizards could do the same.

As for Hufflepuff... they didn't have many, but they were only six fewer than Ravenclaw, so the gap wasn't big.

"Don't forget what I said: stay calm." Flitwick reminded in his high-pitched voice, "You must keep yourself relaxed, just like when you're holding something normally. Pronouncing the incantation correctly is also very important; don't mispronounce it."

Under his guidance, more and more young wizards met the requirements, producing stable "light bulbs".

Kyle looked at his two roommates... they were still trying.
