Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Mining and Smelting

The two walked out of the house, catching the attention of Jerry who was outside his house helping farm some carrots, glaring at Tevoro before plucking out another carrot.

"What's his problem?"

Tevoro whispered to Hemwick after walking past.

"Maybe he's jealous of all the gifts you got the other day."

Hemwick said. They walked out of the entrance of the village, admiring Tevoro's wooden walls.

"I still need to secure the outside with some cobblestone, just to ensure nothing can break through easily. Care to help mine some out?"

Tevoro asked, gesturing towards a nearby cave. Hemwick nodded as the two of them equipped iron pickaxes they had been gifted from the villagers. They mined all day, collecting cobble stone and other useful resources like raw chunks of iron and lumps of coal to use as fuel. They mined and mined until suddenly... CRACK! Both their pickaxes ran out of durability and broke.

"That's a shame. Probably a sign that we should start heading back. The sun is setting, and we should probably be at the village in case something happens."

Hemwick suggested. Tevoro agreed and the two made their way back. Most of the villagers were just entering their houses. Walking up the path to Jerry's house, Tevoro saw the village blacksmith, his worn out apron revealing his expertise in the field ore usage.

"Excuse me! Sir, could you help my friend and I?"

"Oh, if it isn't the outsider!"

"I'd prefer if you didn't refer to me as that..."

"What can I do for you? I could sell some armour if you plan on exploring any caves."

"Actually, I was wondering if you could smelt some stuff of ours overnight? We collected a lot of materials and think it would be great if it could get done before tomorrow morning."

The blacksmith collected the materials and put them into some furnaces outside. He pointed out two of them to Tevoro.

"You see, those bottom ones are blast furnaces, they smelt ores twice as fast as the normal ones. If you ever want to use them, you can just go ahead since I don't mind."

"Thanks, a lot."

Tevoro replied, walking back to Hemwick, who was patiently waiting for him before continuing.

Tevoro yawned, stretching his arm behind his back as the very quiet groaning of zombies and rattle of bones faintly infiltrated the village. It was enough to keep Tevoro on edge, but he believed his fortifications would be fine if it had already worked the previous night. The two went to sleep for the night. Tevoro was proven right, having a sound sleep, apart from Hemwick's loud snoring. Tevoro ate a piece of bread before heading out and placing the cobblestone he had mined on the outside of the wooden walls. It wasn't until later in the day did Hemwick come by to help. He had stopped by the blacksmith to pick up all the smelted goods.

"Good news, I don't think breaking tools or armour will be a problem to us, especially if it's made out of iron."

Hemwick said gleefully as he helped place cobblestone. The day flew by in what felt like a blink of an eye. After yet another boring day of building, construction was complete.

"That took longer than I would have liked it to..."

Tevoro said, sighing as he and Hemwick looked at the finished walls.

"What should we name it?"

Hemwick asked.

"The villagers don't seem to have a name for this place, so based off what we've done, I think The Walls would be an appropriate name."

Hemwick looked over at Tevoro, hesitant at his choice.

"That sounds kind of... stupid."

"Huh! What do you mean!?"

"I mean, duh. There are walls, so naming it The Walls is kind of dumb because it's self-explanatory, no?"

"Fine then! Do you have any other names for this place!?"

Tevoro snapped. Hemwick was silent for a couple moments before mumbling under his breath.
