The sun was bleeding into the sky, an orange fire consuming the darkness, but there was no warmth in it. Only the cruel, indifferent reminder that another night had passed without her. Another day, Lena was gone. Another day, I hadn't found her.
I crouched near the creek bed, my fingertips caked with blood that wasn't mine. The water shimmered, pink and red where one of the rogues had bled out hours earlier. His last words were lies, but his blood told the truth — they'd passed through here. They had her. She was close once.
Now, nothing.
The trail had gone cold.
My knuckles were torn, my shirt in tatters. I hadn't shifted in hours. Too focused on her scent to waste time healing. Too locked in the thought of her in chains, in pain, to care what it cost me.
Lucas and Evan flanked the tree line, watchful. Sienna lingered just behind me, silent, always watching. She was the only one who dared speak when my temper scraped the edges of sanity.
