The sanctum's war chamber was dim, the candlelight barely flickering against the carved stone walls. Maps sprawled across the central table—many hand-drawn, some conjured through Kael's time-augury. The hourglass shimmered faintly at the table's edge, its sands in constant motion.
Kael's fingers hovered above the map, drawing invisible lines from the Frostspire to the southern ridge: the next ley-line nexus.
But even as he planned, something gnawed at him. A presence.
A whisper.
Not from the abyss—but from somewhere... else.
He closed his eyes, reaching inward.
The hourglass pulsed.
And the world around him changed.
Darkness swallowed the sanctum. Stars blinked into a void sky. He stood alone atop a bridge of broken time, suspended over an infinite chasm.
And there, at the far end, stood her.
A figure cloaked in twilight, with eyes like shattered glass and hair flowing like stardust.
"Who are you?" Kael asked, voice echoing into eternity.
She didn't speak. Instead, she raised her hand, revealing a mirror. Not of glass—but memory. Inside it, Kael saw himself—but changed.
Older. Hardened. Eyes colder.
Standing over a field of corpses, abyss and human alike.
"No," Kael whispered.
The woman turned the mirror, and now he saw something else.
A world free of the abyss.
But… empty.
Lifeless.
A warning.
Kael stumbled back as the vision broke.
He gasped, falling to one knee in the war chamber.
"Kael?" Elena's voice cut through the haze. She was already at his side. "Another vision?"
"Worse," he said. "A crossroad. If I keep walking this path... I might win. But I could lose everything else."
She helped him up, eyes searching his. "Then we walk it together. And we remember who we are."
Kael looked at her, grateful.
Then Greg entered, brushing frost from his shoulders.
"The scouts are back. You're gonna want to see this."

The war map shimmered again, revealing the Crimson Hollow, the next known ley-point.
But now... it pulsed red.
Not abyssal red. Not corrupted.
Something else.
"What is that?" Seraphina asked.
Greg crossed his arms. "The scouts say the abyss isn't invading it. They're avoiding it."
Elena frowned. "Why?"
Kael's gaze narrowed. "Because something worse lives there."
And he was right.
Because deep in the Crimson Hollow, something ancient had awakened.
Something not from the abyss.
But from before it.
