She noticed my gaze and winced. I could tell she was shy, the way she avoided my eyes while slowly poking pieces of pork into her mouth. Suddenly, she stopped and dropped her fork.
"I'll stop eating if you just sit there and watch me," she said, though her voice didn't match her bold words.
I knew she was shy, but I didn't say anything about it. Instead, I focused on what had been on my mind for a long time.
"I was thinking..." I paused, studying her face. Her curious eyes were fixed on me. "How about I buy you a new car? Please don't take it the wrong way. I know your family is rich and you can buy as many cars as you want, but I wanted to give you one as a gift. I've noticed your car has been acting up lately."
She smiled, lowering her gaze and picking up her fork again.
"Please," I added, sensing her silent resistance.
She looked up at me. "Never mind. I was just wondering why you think a car would buy my heart over," she said, and I got the gist.
