Chapter 18 - Silvan

Sunlight crept through the small circular window, casting a glow across the cold floor where four bodies were sprawled out like discarded action figures. One snored like a chainsaw, one muttered in his sleep about tea and manners, another lay stiff like a plank, and the last was rolled up in a blanket burrito, twitching slightly.

BANG!

The door burst open with a dramatic kick.

"WAKE UP, YOU BUMS! WE MADE IT!"

Tony jerked up with a groggy grunt. "Did we die? Is this the afterlife?"

"Why do you always sound like that first thing in the morning..." Olorun rubbed his forehead, sighing. "Also, what do you mean we made it?"

Kenji, somehow already sitting upright, eyes still half-closed: "...Was already awake."

"Come on! Get to the deck, now! You don't wanna miss this!" Amai spun on her heel and bolted back down the corridor, her boots clanging against the metal.

They scrambled out, following the narrow corridor that twisted through the ship's belly, until finally—

The hatch swung open.

And they stepped into the morning light.

Before them stretched a vast island, glowing emerald under the sun. Silvan Island. A land of ancient trees so massive they pierced the clouds, their trunks as wide as houses. Wooden bridges webbed through the upper canopies like a city suspended in the sky. Down below, the ground sparkled with silvergrass and glowing mushrooms, casting soft colors across the land.

Giant birds circled the cliffs, nests the size of boats perched in the crevices. Crystal-clear waterfalls spilled from the trees into floating lakes, held mid-air by soft gravitational pulses only found in this region of the world. Floating lanterns drifted lazily in the sky, guided by wind spirits that danced invisibly across the current.

The ship was docked in one of the lower branches—yes, branches. A massive wooden dock had been fused into the tree's bark, alive and pulsing faintly with light. Other ships were parked along different branches, each one uniquely shaped and styled. It was a meeting point. A place of trade, stories, and recruitment.

Tony let out a low whistle. "Now this is something."

Eleo's ears stood up high, tail twitching with excitement. "Whoa… this place looks like a salad I'd actually eat."

Kenji was quiet, eyes scanning the terrain. "So this is Silvan…"

Olorun stood at the edge of the railing, arms folded. "The Island of Whispering Roots… they say the trees remember everything that's ever happened here."

Amai stood behind them, her arms crossed, watching their reactions with a faint smirk. She leaned against the doorframe, her little companion snuggled against her shoulder.

"So what now?" Tony asked.

"You go explore, do what you need to do," Amai said. "Silvan Island is the perfect place to build your team and find a female member. There's a tournament arena in the lower glades, a bounty board in the canopy market, a guild recruiter on the crystal lake shore, and rumor has it... someone's selling enchanted weapons at the forest's heart."

Olorun narrowed his eyes. "Any rules?"

"Only one," Amai said, turning serious. "Don't pick a fight with the Tree Knights. They protect the island. If they show up, you run. Got it?"

They all nodded.

Eleo pumped a fist into the air. "Alright! Let's go find some girl teammates, punch a few trees, and maybe get some glowing mushrooms for breakfast!"

Kenji raised a brow. "Please don't punch the trees."

Tony adjusted his bowtie. "Let's make a name for ourselves."

With that, the boys stepped off the ship and onto the wooden platform, sunlight filtering down from above. A new world awaited them—alive, wild, and full of promise.

Amai watched them go with a quiet smile. "Try not to die out there, weirdos."

Her pet blinked slowly and let out a sleepy "Mmmrrhh."

Then the door shut behind her.

The team stepped off the ship and onto soft mossy ground. The forest around them was glowing in shades of green and gold, alive with the sounds of chirping birds and leaves rustling like whispers. Everything felt ancient, wild, and untouched.

Eleo took a few bouncy steps ahead, his ears twitching.

"Woah… guys… the ground's so soft it's like I'm walkin' on a bunny!"

He immediately dropped and rolled into the moss. "Yup, new bed. Found it. This is mine now."

Tony adjusted his bowtie and looked up as a massive tree bent slightly toward him. "Fascinating. The tree appears to be observing us. Hm. Should I introduce myself?"

Kenji crossed his arms, scowling slightly. "Don't get comfortable. We don't know what's out here."

Eleo popped up behind him, poking his side. "Yeah yeah Mr. Edgy Samurai, try relaxin' once in a while."

Kenji smacked his hand away with a small glare. "Try using your brain once in a while."

Olorun, towering and calm, crouched near a sparkling pool. He dipped his fingers in. The water shimmered. "This island… it breathes."

A butterfly the size of a small plate landed on his head. Olorun didn't react.

"Something's watching us."

Just then, the moss under Eleo puffed and a cloud of pink spores burst into the air.

"AGH!" Eleo waved his arms, coughing. "The grass just sneezed on me!"

Suddenly a vine from a nearby tree whipped out and yanked Tony's tie.

"Hey! You thieving branch, I'll have you know this was custom-stitched in the Bone District!"

As they kept walking, the trees grew taller—some twisted in strange shapes, others with glowing veins. Small eyes blinked between branches. The forest was alive, playful, curious, and cautious.

Kenji's foot pressed on a strange stone. It clicked.

"Wait—"

FWOOOSH!

The ground under him spun and a puff of air launched him 20 feet into the air.

He landed upside down, hanging by his leg in a giant flower trap.

Eleo laughed so hard he fell backward into a bush. "HAAH! You look like a serious banana!"

Kenji growled, sword halfway out. "Someone… get me… down."

Tony calmly sipped a cup of tea he had somehow produced. "This forest is either trying to kill us or make friends. Hard to tell which."

Then they heard it…

A soft giggle.

Something tiny peeked from behind a branch. A creature no taller than a squirrel with leafy clothing and a little staff. But the moment their eyes met, it vanished.

Eleo blinked. "Did anyone see that?"

Olorun stood, silent. "The forest spirits… they're watching."

Kenji crossed his arms, glaring at the mossy path ahead. "Could we please head toward the town now? We don't have time to waste."

Eleo's ears perked up, twitching at a rustle in the nearby bush. "Wait, hold on, Kenji—I think I saw something shiny in that bush!"

He got on all fours, tail wiggling like an excited puppy. "It might be treasure! Or like… a baby deer wearing socks!"

Olorun raised a brow. "Could also be a scary monster…"

He cracked his knuckles dramatically. "With giant claws. That screams like your nightmares."

Tony chimed in, adjusting his 2nd tie. "Or a witch. A forest-dwelling beauty with a frog army. I'd marry her if she can make tea."

Kenji muttered, "Or it's just an ugly Olorun lookalike waiting to jump out."

Olorun's eyes narrowed. He slowly raised one hand, extending only his pinky.

In a flash—SWIP!—he lunged with Finger Knife, his pinky slicing through the air with deadly precision.

Kenji's sword flashed up with a CLINK, barely catching the strike.

"Watch it, swordsman," Olorun said with a smirk.

"You watch it, scorpion," Kenji snapped back.

"At least I don't have blue hair," Olorun said, circling him.

"At least I don't have hair that looks like a bunch of snakes doing a bad conga line!" Kenji countered.

Tony raised his hands, stepping between them. "Gentlemen! Please! Must we duel like gentlemen—or like total idiots?"

They both paused, then looked at each other, still fuming.

Meanwhile, Eleo was halfway inside the bush now, kicking his legs as he wriggled deeper.

"Guys, I found a bug with a hat! IT'S GOT A LITTLE HAT!"

He held up a beetle with a leaf balanced on its head.

Tony sighed heavily. "I cannot believe this is my crew…"

Olorun suddenly broke into a grin. "Heh… the bug's got better style than you, Kenji."

Kenji's sword trembled in his grip. "I swear—"

But before he could finish, Olorun crouched next to Eleo, eyes wide like a curious kid.

"Wait, where's the bug? Let me see!"

He started poking around excitedly in the bush too, all his intense aura gone.

Tony blinked. "...Is Olorun playing?"

Olorun gasped. "Another bug with a cape!"

Eleo giggled. "We're building a bug army!"

Kenji stared in disbelief as his two most chaotic crewmates were now talking to beetles.

"I give up."

Tony placed a hand on Kenji's shoulder. "Let them have this, Kenji. Someday, when we're all old and gray, you'll miss the time they built a bug militia."
