Chapter 39 - CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

The familiar chaos of the Charterhouse cafeteria buzzed around Louisa, Ellie, and Scarlett at their usual table. The conversation revolved around Jayden's unexpected admission to them in Tribeca.

"He seemed… different," Louisa admitted, stirring her iced tea thoughtfully. "More genuine, maybe?"

Scarlett shrugged, but her usual skepticism seemed slightly tempered. "Maybe. Or maybe he's just a really good actor. But hey, if he actually apologized, that's… progress, I guess. Think about it, Lou."

Ellie, ever fiercely protective, chimed in, her tone light but with an underlying steel. "I say, proceed with extreme caution. If he hurts you, Louisa Wren, I swear I will personally castrate him with a rusty spoon and happily go to jail for it."

The trio burst into laughter, the image of Ellie's threat both ridiculous and comforting.

"Brave and stupid," Scarlett declared, shaking her head but smiling.

Suddenly, a ripple of hushed whispers spread through the cafeteria. Heads turned, conversations died down. An undeniable shift in the atmosphere had occurred.

Jayden King Walton, flanked by Ashtray and Jason, had just entered. It was a rare sight. He'd been conspicuously absent for days, and even when present, rarely graced the bustling cafeteria with his presence.

His eyes immediately found Louisa's. He offered a warm, genuine smile, a direct acknowledgment that seemed to cut through the noise of the room. Ashtray and Jason offered nods to Ellie and Scarlett, a surprising display of casual acknowledgment.

Across the cafeteria, in the elevated VIP lounge, Anya had been observing the subtle interactions. She nudged Cassia, her eyes wide. "Cass, did you see that? Those two… they are totally back at it."

Cassia, who had been staring blankly at her untouched lunch, snorted dismissively. "I don't care, Anya. I have way bigger things on my mind right now."

Anya stared at her friend, shocked. "Cass! What? I thought we were going to, like, react? Can't you see what's happening? That Louisa girl is about to steal your man!"

Cassia abruptly stood up, her hand slamming on the table with a sharp crack that drew several curious glances.

"Cass?" Anya whispered, bewildered. "Where are you going?"

But Cassia didn't reply. Her eyes, usually sparkling with confidence, were strangely vacant as she slowly walked away from the VIP lounge, her gaze briefly locking with Jayden's as she passed.

Jayden's brow furrowed with a flicker of concern. Cassia didn't seem like her usual vibrant self.

"Is she okay?" Ashtray murmured to Jayden and Jason, noticing his friend's unusual demeanor. Jason simply shrugged, equally perplexed.

At another table, Thea and Marcus had witnessed the entire exchange – Jayden's focused gaze on Louisa, Cassia's abrupt departure.

"Something's definitely up with Cassia," Marcus observed, his gaze following her retreating figure. "Thea, maybe you should go check on her?"

Thea hesitated, a flicker of worry in her eyes despite her usual cool demeanor. "Anya's there. She'll handle it." But deep down, a sense of unease settled within her.

Cassia walked with a slow, deliberate pace, her usual vibrant energy completely absent. The bustling hallway outside the cafeteria seemed to fade into a muted background as she moved, her eyes fixed on some unseen point in the distance.

She wasn't heading towards her locker or the library, her usual destinations when she needed a moment of quiet. Instead, she found herself drawn to the empty art studio, a space usually filled with the vibrant chaos of creativity but now still and silent.

She pushed open the heavy door and stepped inside, the scent of paint and clay a familiar comfort. The large windows overlooking the school grounds cast long shadows across the room. She wandered aimlessly between the easels, her fingers trailing lightly over the dusty surfaces.

Her mind was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions, a stark contrast to the blank canvas leaning against the wall. Jayden's focused gaze on Louisa in the cafeteria had been like a sharp jab, a reminder of the shift in their dynamic. But it wasn't just about Jayden. It was about everything.

Her parents' increasingly strained relationship had been casting a long shadow over her usually bright disposition. The constant hushed arguments, the forced smiles at social gatherings – it was all starting to feel suffocating.

Anya, caught up in the drama of Jayden and Louisa, hadn't noticed Cassia's withdrawal, her usual effervescent chatter grating on Cassia's frayed nerves.

The pressure to maintain her perfect image, the effortlessly popular and happy Cassia Blackwood, was becoming unbearable. It felt like she was constantly acting, her true feelings buried beneath layers of carefully constructed smiles and witty remarks.

She stopped in front of a mirror, her own reflection staring back at her – the familiar bright eyes now dull, the usual confident smile replaced by a hint of vulnerability.

For the first time in a long time, Cassia felt like the carefully constructed façade was starting to crumble. The effortless joy was gone, replaced by a heavy weariness she didn't know how to shake.

The image of Jayden's furrowed brow as she'd walked past flickered in her mind. A part of her wanted to reach out, to confide in him, but the thought felt heavy, complicated by the unspoken tension between him and Louisa.

She sighed, the sound echoing in the empty studio. She needed to find a way to navigate this overwhelming wave of emotions, to find her footing again. But in the silence of the art room, surrounded by the tools of creation, Cassia felt utterly lost.

As the final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, Cassia walked with a determined stride towards her sleek black SUV, the chauffeur standing by the open back door. Her usual bubbly energy was still noticeably absent.

Meanwhile, Jayden, having observed her quiet departure from the cafeteria, hurried after her, calling her name.

"Cassia! Hey, Cass!" He caught up to her just as she reached her car, gently taking her arm to stop her.

"Hey," he said, his brow furrowed with concern. "You alright? I was calling you in the cafeteria. Is everything okay? Are you feeling sick?"

He reached out, the back of his hand lightly touching her forehead and then her neck, checking for a fever.

Cassia felt a wave of longing wash over her. She wanted to lean into his touch, to hug him tightly and let out all the pent-up emotions that had been swirling inside her.

It was what she used to do when they were together, when Jayden was her safe harbor.

But she resisted the urge with all her willpower, forcing a bright, though unconvincing, smile.

"I'm fine, Jayden. Just… tired. Need to get some rest." She tried to dismiss his concern, wanting to retreat into the sanctuary of her car.

Jayden didn't release her arm. "Make sure you take some medication too, okay? Don't want you getting really sick." His blue eyes held a genuine worry that Cassia couldn't completely ignore.

She managed a nod. "Yeah, I will." She finally slipped into the back seat of her car.

The chauffeur closed the door, and with a final, lingering look at Jayden, Cassia's SUV pulled away from the curb. Jayden watched it go, a thoughtful expression on his face.

Across the parking lot, Louisa, who had been walking towards the gates with Ellie and Scarlett, witnessed the brief interaction between Jayden and Cassia.

A sharp pang of jealousy pierced through her. What was she even thinking, entertaining the idea of a connection with him? He clearly still cared deeply for his ex.

"Louisa! Come on!" Ellie called, noticing her friend's frozen stance. They continued walking towards the gates.

Just as they reached the curb, a sleek, gunmetal grey Bentley Flying Spur sedan pulled up beside them. Jayden was at the wheel. He leaned over, a charming, albeit slightly hesitant, smile on his face.

"Hey, Wren," he said, his gaze meeting Louisa's. "Could I borrow you for a little while? Up until around five? I promise to drop you off at the diner so you won't be late for work."

Louisa hesitated, her eyes flicking between Jayden and the receding image of Cassia's car. She didn't really want to go. But Ellie and Scarlett exchanged knowing glances and subtly nudged her forward.

"Don't you dare hurt her or make her cry, King," Scarlett warned, her tone serious.

Ellie echoed the threat with a fierce glare.

Jayden was slightly surprised by Louisa's resistance, a flicker of something unreadable crossing his features. But he simply smiled warmly at her defiance, holding her gaze until, with a sigh of reluctant curiosity, Louisa finally got into the passenger seat of his Bentley.
