City S is an industrial city adjacent to Shanghai, where the private economy is highly developed.
And what does a thriving private economy represent?
Family businesses.
This situation shows that most companies in City S are unable to establish a complete, modern enterprise system.
Can you really expect the chairman's sister-in-law to supervise the chairman's uncle?
That's why there are so many economic disputes here. As a result, lawyers in City S have plenty of business—and charge high fees!
Lu Mingjun discovered all of this during her train ride.
After six hours of travel, she finally arrived in City S.
The city's industrial development relies heavily on its migrant population. For this reason, factories here offer high salaries, attracting many people to arrive with nothing but bags on their backs.
As a result, the train station was crowded and bustling.
Dragging her suitcase, Lu Mingjun stepped out of the station and immediately felt the city's noisy, vibrant energy.
She looked up at the sky. It was a deep blue, and the sun streamed through the clouds, adding warmth to the urban landscape.
But it was already late, and Lu Mingjun wasn't in the mood to appreciate the scenery.
She quickly hailed a taxi to the real estate agency she'd contacted earlier.
When she arrived, the agent introduced her to the rental properties she'd expressed interest in.
He was professional, explaining the pros and cons of each option in detail to help her make a decision.
After listening carefully, Lu Mingjun narrowed down the choices and personally visited two of the homes she liked.
Because she didn't want to stay in a hotel, she made her decision quickly. Within two hours, she had rented a north-facing bedroom near the law firm in a pleasant neighborhood—for just 750 yuan a month.
Although the room was small, it was enough for her to live alone.
The agent, seeing how young she was, kindly helped her move her luggage several times using his electric bike.
After getting settled, Lu Mingjun was exhausted—but the sense of having broken free from her previous fate made all the fatigue feel worthwhile.
Starting today, her life had endless possibilities.
That night, Lu Mingjun slept especially well. Maybe it was being away from her family that made her feel truly relaxed, or maybe it was the excitement of finally doing the job she'd dreamed of. Either way, her heart was full of anticipation.
Early the next morning, her phone's ringtone woke her from a deep sleep.
She got up, washed, had a simple breakfast, and headed out to report for work at Xinxing Law Firm.
The Financial Building where the firm was located was one of City S's landmarks. Its modern, magnificent design made a strong impression.
When Lu Mingjun walked into the building, she was stopped by security at the entrance for not having a work ID.
She called Director Jiang, and shortly after, a young woman came down to escort her.
As she approached, the woman introduced herself: "I'm Wang Lulu, Director Jiang's assistant. We're on the 19th floor—Director Jiang chose it because she thinks 19 is a lucky number."
The elevator quickly arrived on the 19th floor, where a capable-looking receptionist was already at the front desk.
When she saw Wang Lulu approaching, she greeted her immediately: "Good morning, Assistant Wang!"
Wang Lulu nodded and said, "This is Lu Mingjun. Please give her a work card."
The receptionist promptly took out a card from a drawer and handed it to Lu Mingjun with both hands.
"Lawyer Lu, here's your work card. Once your desk is assigned, let me know and I'll bring your office supplies. My name is Cheng Yi—you can call me Xiao Cheng."
Lu Mingjun accepted the card with both hands. "Thank you, Xiao Cheng."
Wang Lulu then led her inside. "Director Jiang hasn't arrived yet. You can wait over there."
As they passed a large open-plan workspace, Wang Lulu said, "This is the office area for trainee lawyers."
They continued walking to the easternmost section.
"And here is the office for the director and senior partners," she added, raising her brows slightly.
She then opened the largest double door. A black steel nameplate beside it read: Director Jiang Xinxin.
Inside was a suite. Wang Lulu's desk sat to the left of another double door. Behind it stood a wall of bookcases; opposite was a three-seater sofa and a solid wood coffee table.
Wang Lulu gestured for Lu Mingjun to sit on the sofa. Then, with practiced ease, she walked to the right side of the bookcase and opened a hidden door—designed to look just like another shelf. Inside was a concealed tea room.
Soon, she returned with a cup of white tea.
"I don't know what kind of tea you like, but Director Jiang prefers white tea, so I made you some to try."
Lu Mingjun took the cup and sipped. A refreshing fragrance spread in her mouth, leaving her feeling calm and content.
"Thank you, Assistant Wang. This tea is delicious," she said sincerely.
Wang Lulu smiled faintly, as if used to hearing compliments. She returned to her desk, sorting through documents while chatting.
"What school are you from? What's your major?" she asked with interest.
"I'm from the Law School of W University. I just finished my graduate program. My research focus was fiscal and financial law," Lu Mingjun replied.
"No wonder you're so lucky to have joined our firm right after graduation," Wang Lulu said with admiration. "We're in urgent need of finance and tax law specialists right now."
Lu Mingjun took note of that, but she was no longer a naïve newcomer.
She casually changed the subject: "When does Director Jiang usually arrive?"
"She should be here soon. She's normally very punctual," Wang Lulu replied. "But she had a very important video conference this morning, so she might be a little late."
The two were chatting when footsteps echoed outside the door. A middle-aged woman in an elegant, high-end business suit walked in.
"Good morning, Director Jiang!" Wang Lulu quickly stood to greet her.
Lu Mingjun stood up as well, gazing at the legendary Director Jiang.
She was tall, poised, and had a sharp, penetrating gaze that seemed to see through everything.
"Well, Xiaolu, this must be the new hire—Lu Mingjun, right?" Director Jiang asked.
"Yes, Director Jiang! She hasn't been assigned a desk yet, so I had her wait for you here," Wang Lulu replied.
Director Jiang nodded and turned to Lu Mingjun. "Mingjun, come in with me."
