Chapter 61 - 61

Yichen ended the call with Xulin, her hands trembling as she said,

"Tell them I'm not home. I've been out since earlier..."

Mengxi replied, "But even Ning Li's mother is here herself...."

Yichen snapped, "I said go out there and tell them I'm not home! I don't care if it's the emperor himself....they better not step into this house! Or who tell them I was the one who forced Zhan into this marriage?!"

Mengxi quickly left Yichen's room, locked the door with shaky hands, Yichen sat at the edge of the bed, her heart pounding. Only Heaven knew what would be said today. At least Zong and his brother had gone out earlier, and Zihan and Beiting had been in Nainai's section of the house since morning.

She dialed Xulin again to inform her that Ning Li's mother had arrived with an entourage of cars. Xulin gasped,

"Oh no... What's the situation now?"

Yichen wiped the sweat from her brow, her voice strained.

"I'm afraid they'll dig up everything, Xulin. I know that girl, Ning Li, has spilled it all...how it happened, how we schemed. Xulin, if they expose everything here, I'm finished. The only small relief is that Zong isn't home. Zihan and Beiting are with the old woman, but you know how loud Ning Li's mother can be. They'll hear the noise and come out. I already told Mengxi to say I'm not home."

Xulin sighed heavily.

"Honestly, Yichen, what did you ever see in that Ning Li family that made you tie your son to their daughter?"

Yichen replied, "It was just about status. I wanted people to say my son married into a rich family, that's all. It was all about reputation....and people did talk, didn't they?"

Xulin scoffed.

"And what have you gained from their wealth?"

Yichen waved a hand.

"Oh, you wouldn't understand. Just the other day, Ning Li's mother gave me a necklace and earrings worth over one and a half million as a gift. Thanks to this bond, I get invited to all the high society women's gatherings....governors' wives, politicians' wives...I've met nearly all of them. Even some prominent men..."

Her eyes widened as she heard shouting in the courtyard.

"They're here, Xulin. We'll talk later." She hung up and crept toward the window, pulling the curtain aside slightly to peek.

Ning Li's mother stood in the courtyard, her voice thundering.

"Wherever Yichen is hiding today, she will come out! If I leave this house today, it will only be after she shows her face and confesses what she did. My daughter was deceived, tricked into thinking she had a future with that man... only to be given a co-wife overnight?! Not today. Today she'll learn what it means to mess with me. Just as I never accepted a co-wife, my daughter won't either. Let her bring out all those fake spiritualists she runs to... today, she'll explain everything and expose herself for what she's done... sabotaging my daughter's wedding to match her son with someone else!"

Another woman...Ning Li's sister... shouted, her voice cutting through the noise,

"She better come out and say it herself... how she ruined my cousin's wedding and shoved her own son into marrying someone else. If she doesn't, I swear we'll tear this house down. I dare anyone to stop us!"

Ning Li's mother friends had already start banging the sitting room door, echoing the sentiment.

"She must come out, no matter where she's hiding. She'll expose herself today. People have been whispering about her evil doings for years. Today is the end of her dark games!"

Beiting hurried into the compound, having heard the commotion, with Zihan close behind. In her room, Yichen clasped her head with both hands, pacing in panic as tears streamed down her face. She muttered to herself, praying they wouldn't come into the house.

What madness led her to become so entangled with Ning Li's family? Ning Li knew all her secrets, and now it was all turning against her. She and Ning Li had gone together to consult that spiritualist, but now it had backfired. Ning Li had confessed everything to her mother. The girl hadn't kept quiet.

Yichen collapsed onto the edge of the bed and broke down crying.

"What is happening to me? Please, Heaven, shield me from disgrace. Let them not hear the noise outside and come in. If they do, I'm truly doomed."

Hearing Beiting's voice asking what was going on, Yichen quickly stood up, her eyes wide with panic. Her stomach twisted with unease. Ning Li's Aunt raised her voice sharply, saying, "Our entire family line has never tolerated co-wives, and it's not going to start with Ning Li. It's a lie! Ning Li will never accept sharing a husband. Yichen needs to come out and confess what she did to destroy that Mr. Wen Yo Lee's son wedding...right here, right now."

Beiting narrowed her eyes and said, "Oh? So that's why you're here?"

another one arrived, clearly furious. "Exactly. That's why we're here. That sorcerer Yichen paid to destroy this house wedding... she's going to take us to him today. We'll see what she did that caused such misfortune to fall on our daughter. Look at all of us... none of us has ever shared a husband. And I know you don't support co-wives either, Ms. Ning Li was promised her own husband... she's not going to live with some random rival!"

From inside, Nainai's voice rang out loudly, full of disbelief. "What madness is this? Who opened the gate and let those mad people into our house? Has the gatekeeper lost his mind? What gives him the right to let lunatics barge in here acting like they own the place?

"Where are Zong and Quentin? Someone needs to deal with that fool at the gate! How could he open the door to these hysterical people so they can come in and threaten us like this?"

Ning Li's mother stepped forward with mocking defiance. "We're not lunatics, ma'am...but we'll act like them if we're pushed. We're only here for one thing: Yichen. She needs to come out and explain what she did that ruined my daughter's happiness. It's because of her that my daughter now has to face a rival... without knowing or agreeing to it! She better lead us to the charmer she hired, because we're not leaving without answers."

Nainai's eyes bulged with fury. "Who even are you? And what charmer are you talking about? Yichen? She doesn't know anyone like that... she's never even mentioned such nonsense. You people are delusional! Shameless! You think you can come here and slander her like this?

"Who is this daughter you keep mentioning? Ning Li? Let me tell you something... since you've dared to frame Yichen like this, Zhan will come out wherever he is and declare there was never any relationship between him and that brat of yours. You came into his home to insult his mother? Fine! But today, Zhan will humiliate Ning Li, mark my words. None of us here knows any sorcerer, and if someone does, may the heavens forgive them. You people are just bitter troublemakers.

"If you don't leave this compound immediately, I'm going to call the police. We'll see who dares to support you then. Yichen has nothing to do with any of this. In fact, she's been the happiest about this wedding since Zong and Quentin arranged it. Since I've known her, she's never visited me this early in the morning...except the day the wedding was happened. Right now, she's on her way to pick up the groom from his grandmother's house where he spent the night. Just look at you people! Leave at once before I lose my temper."

Everyone... from Ning Li's mother to her daughters and their friends...fell silent, stunned as they stared at Nainai. She turned and stormed away, still fuming. "Yichen has been more excited about this marriage than anyone else. From the beginning, she never even liked that wretched Sen Wen. It was always Yibo she wanted to marry her son. We're the ones who initially opposed it."

Zihan stole a glance at Beiting, who was also staring after Nainai. Slowly, they followed behind her.

Meanwhile, Ning Li collapsed into heart-wrenching sobs. Her whole body trembled as she knelt on the floor and cried, "I'm finished, Mummy! I can't live without Zhan...I love him. So all along, they were lying to me? Yichen and Zhan planned this marriage together? Please, Mummy, help me. I can't lose him...I love him, I really do!"

Her mother was seething with fury, at a loss for words as she watched Ning Li crumble. After a while, once Nainai is far, she turned to Beiting and whispered, "It's not just a charmer. Yichen's been going to real spiritual practitioners too."

Ning Li mother gave a cold smile as she looked at her friends and said, "Yichen has brought trouble upon herself. She had a hand in this, played a part in making my daughter share her husband with another man. Well, now she'll learn what it means to cross me. From this moment on, she and her son will only watch from afar. Ning Li will not live with a co-man... our entire lineage has never tolerated such a thing, and it will not start with her. Let's go."

Ning Li's older sister pulled her up from the floor, where she was sobbing uncontrollably. "Crying won't change anything. Get up, let's leave and figure out what to do next. Yichen will learn who she's dealing with."

Through her tears, Ning Li wailed, "Mom, they married him off to his arrogant cousin! That rude, insufferable brat who always looked at me with contempt. How could this happen? How could they take my husband away from me? If I had known, I would never have trusted Zhan's mother. She was just deceiving me all along. Mom, you should see how much Zhan dotes on that boy. What will I do if I really lose him? I can't live without him!"

Her mother, furious, smacked her across the mouth. "Who do you think is bringing him into that house? That house is yours alone until the end of time... unless you're not my daughter. Zhan belongs to you and no one else. Even his own mother, Yichen, will only see him from a distance. If she thinks we'll just sit back and accept this, she's mistaken. I will make sure she regrets ever interfering in our affairs."

With that, she dragged Ning Li into the car, fuming. The others followed, and soon, they left the house. Meanwhile, Yichen, who had been watching from behind the window, wiped the sweat off her face and sat down on the bed, lost in thought.

Nainai looked at Beiting and Zihan with a knowing smile and said, "Well, you all heard everything for yourselves. I've always known Yichen goes to sorcerers, but if she truly had a hand in ruining my grandson's wedding, then she's put her own marriage in jeopardy too."

Suddenly, Nainai burst into heavy sobs. "Zong must have been cursed with the worst kind of bad luck to have ended up with a woman like Yichen! She and her daughter in-law sneaking off to see a sorcerer without shame, without fear. If I find proof that she ruined Yibo's wedding, there will be no peace in this house! I will personally throw her belongings out onto the street. She only ever had my respect because of Zhan!"

Beiting sighed heavily. "I don't even know what to say anymore."

Nainai scoffed. "Of course you don't. And she's right inside, hearing all of this! Who knows, she might even be panicking right now. I wish they had dragged her outside and beaten some sense into her instead of just standing there arguing."

Beiting frowned. "But Ayi, you know what she's like. Why would you try to defend her in front of them?"

Nainai waved her off. "Did you not see how shaken they were? They'll forget all about the wedding now and turn their full attention to Yichen. They're going to tear her apart, and I made sure of it."

Beiting burst into laughter at Nainai's words. Nainai shook her head. "You people still don't know me, do you? I'm just waiting for Zong and Quentin to come back from Yuting mother's house, where she ran off with my grandson. They need to hear about this madness. Even Aji told me she didn't trust this sudden cancellation of Yibo's wedding, which is why she left early this morning to investigate. I swear, if I find out Yichen had anything to do with breaking off this marriage, I'll make sure she doesn't stay in this house another day."

With that, she stormed off to her room. Beiting shook her head. "Yichen has ruined herself, both in this world and the next. And now, what's the point of having in-laws barging into our home to insult us like this? I only feel bad for Zhan. He was unlucky to have such a mother. This isn't the first time she's stirred up trouble without a single thought of the consequences. Honestly, I wonder if Yichen will even make it through life unscathed."

Zihan stayed silent, but she was just as shocked by the things she had heard from Ning Li's mother and her entourage.

It was almost noon when Wei Po entered Nainai's sitting room. Yibo, wearing a face mask, quietly followed behind her. Nainai, who was seated with Yong Dan, glanced at them briefly. Yibo walked past without saying anything and went straight to the bedroom, his steps slow and heavy. Nainai gave Wei Po a single look, then scoffed and turned away. Yong Dan spread out a mat for her and greeted her warmly. After exchanging pleasantries, Wei Po sat down and said, "Good day, Shuyi."

Nainai looked at her and replied, "Yes, good day. But honestly, you should try keeping your child in line. Yuting has no respect for me whatsoever. How can she act like she's lost her mind just because things didn't go her way? She's embarrassed all of us. And you... if you really believed in the truth...you should've dragged them back here yesterday. I told her clearly not to go anywhere, yet she disobeyed. I'm truly furious. Since midnight, I've been meaning to come to the house and confront her, but Zong and Quentin stopped me."

Wei Po, listening quietly, said, "Please calm down… let's hope for the best."

Nainai sighed. "I treated Yuting like my own child, but look at what she's done to me. Everyone in this house is shaken by this marriage. I even said Zhan should divorce him. But the fool ran off... it's clear he wants this marriage. And now he's gone, no sign of him since yesterday."

Wei Po said, "Well, may it turn out for the best. Anyway, here's Yibo. He's not feeling well, but I promised his parents I'd bring him back, so here he is."

Nainai widened her eyes. "And he's sick? You brought him here in this state? He should be back with Beiting!"

Wei Po stood up. "I'll be on my way then, Shuyi. May things work out." She headed toward the door.

Nainai said, "You won't even take a glass of water?"

Wei Po replied, "No, thank you. See you later," and exited the room.

Nainai clicked her tongue and muttered, "Yuting is truly a disgrace," before heading to Yibo in her room.

She found him lying on the bed, still wearing the face mask. She peeled it off and noticed how red his eyes were and how hot his body felt. "What kind of trouble is this? You made yourself sick just because Sen Wen called off the wedding, Yibo?"

Yibo sat up slowly, tears falling from his eyes. He held Nainai's hand and, in a trembling voice, said, "Please, Nainai, help me. He's my older brother...how can they expect me to marry him?"

Nainai's face twisted in concern. "That's what I thought too. This is outrageous. You'll even got pregnant and have his child? How is this even possible?"

Yibo burst into tears, burying his head in a pillow, sobbing uncontrollably. Nainai sat by the bed, resting her face in her palms. "Are Zong and Quentin even thinking straight? Where have they ever seen something like this?"

Yibo kept crying like his heart would break.

"I've seen enough," Nainai whispered.

Just then, Beiting entered the room. She had just spoken to Wei Po outside and learned Yibo was back. Upon seeing her, Nainai stood and said, "Beiting, are Zong and Quentin out of their minds? How can they expect Yibo and Zhan to marry? Zhan is his older brother!"

Beiting asked, "What do you mean?"

"That's what Yibo told me," Nainai replied. "That Zhan is his older brother. And he is. Zhan's father is Zong, and Yibo's is Quentin. His mother is Yuting, and Zhan's mother is Yichen, me either didn't understand from where Zhan become his forbidden brother that he can't spend his life with him as a husband."

Beiting's face hardened. She looked straight at Yibo and said coldly, "Since when does being an non blood older brother cousin stop anyone from marrying someone? Are you going crazy? If you're taken to his house, you two can live however you like....as brothers, as lovers, I don't care. But if I hear you call him your brother again to avoid marrying him, I swear I'll make you regret it. Foolish child."

In a low voice, Nainai muttered, "Well, I don't know how they're brothers either. Zong and Quentin are father to both of them, Yichen and Yuting are the mothers."

Beiting didn't even respond. She turned and walked out of the room.

Nainai sat by the bed, lost in thought. "And Zhan is still missing, no word from him. Maybe he's out there too, devastated by being paired with his own brother."

Yibo didn't say a word...just lay there, crying quietly.

▪️🔸🔹▫️

When Nainai finished talking, both Zong and Quentin were watching her closely. She finally said, "Zong, five cars pulled into the compound. Beiting and Zihan saw it too. That's why I said if what Ning Li's parents are saying turns out to be true, then Yichen is done for in this house... her stay here is over. Right now, we're taking everything slowly since we haven't confirmed things yet. But honestly, I've known for a while that Yichen has been sneaking around."

Zong kept his gaze down, saying nothing. Quentin, on the other hand, didn't believe a word of Nainai's accusations, not even for a second. Eventually, he stood up and said, "Ayi, I'll be going now."

He headed for the door. Nainai watched him leave, then turned to Beiting and said, "They think I'm sitting here spinning tales, but mark my words... soon enough, Yichen's secret will be exposed, plain and clear."

Zong looked at her and replied, "Let's just hope for the best. We'll keep watching and see where the problem really lies before taking any action."

Nainai nodded. "Exactly. We'll go about everything slowly until the truth comes out. There's no need to rush."

He didn't say anything else. She then added, "But really, where's my grandson Zhan? It's been silent since yesterday. Should I go to his house?"

Zong answered, "We passed by his place earlier. He wasn't home."

Nainai gasped and looked at him in concern. "What happened to him then?"

Beiting asked, "What about his work place?"

Zong replied, "He didn't show up. They said he wasn't there either."

Worried, Nainai said, "Are you sure he's okay?"

Zong stood up too, clearly bothered by the situation. "Let me go, Ayi," he said, then left the sitting room, deep in thought... where could Zhan have gone since yesterday?

That night, Nainai rushed out into the courtyard, distressed, calling Zong's name loudly. Quentin stepped out from his part of the house, asking what was wrong.

She ignored him completely and continued toward Zong's side, calling out his name. Seth came out of Zihan's room, following close behind.

He asked, "What's wrong, Nainai? What happened?"

She looked him over from head to toe and snapped, "Stay out of this! I thought you were with your wife, but you're still here and haven't even bothered to come check on us during everything that's been going on!"

When she finally found Zong, she said, "Zong, I can't figure Yibo out anymore. I practically forced him to eat something, but the next thing I know, he started throwing up like he was going to die. His body feels like burning coal...hot and feverish. Look at me...I'm standing upright, but he can't even manage that. Something's not right. Please, let's take him to the hospital before it gets worse. He's really not well."

Quentin stood behind her, watching silently. Zong said, "Alright, let's go." He started walking, with Nainai following behind, and Zihan and Seth trailing them. By the time they arrived, Yong Dan had already helped dress Yibo, who was completely weak. Zong wasted no time and took him straight to the hospital.

That night, Yibo remained at the hospital with Zihan because he was on a drip. Zihan felt deeply sorry for him...the boy had been hit with two blows: heartbreak and an unexpected marriage. He looked pale and frail. Around 1 a.m., Yibo woke from his sleep. Zihan, who had been sitting on the white hospital chair with her head resting against his bed, sat up at the sound of movement.

She approached gently. "Hey, sweetheart, how are you feeling?"

Yibo held her hand, tears filling his eyes. In a soft voice, he asked, "Yemei, please… can't you talk to Bobo and the others and convince them not to make Zhan-ge take me?"

Zihan looked at him with compassion. "You need rest, Yibo. Lie down, or should I make you some tea?"

Yibo shook his head, tears falling down his cheeks. "Please, say something Yemei…"

Zihan sighed. "Yibo, what is it about Zhan that makes you so against the idea of marrying him?"

Yibo's eyes widened. "Yemei… he's my Gege."

Zihan chuckled softly. "Yes, he is… but only because you gave him that title. There's no real blood ties between you two. Zhan is a good man... he doesn't have any traits that should upset you. You know him better than anyone. He knows you too. In just a few days together, I'm telling you, you'll both thank your families for bringing you together. Now, tell me the real reason. But don't say it's because he's your Gege...give me something real. Is there anything about him you genuinely dislike?"

Yibo broke down, sobbing harder. "I just feel so embarrassed around everyone, Yemei. I don't know why... I just do…"

Zihan couldn't help but laugh warmly. She pulled him into a hug, smiling but saying nothing. In her heart, she was puzzled... if Yibo felt this embarrassed around them, how could he spend his time with Zhan then?

With a trembling voice, Yibo added, "I swear… I feel so embarrassed…"

Zihan replied softly, "Okay. Lie down and rest now. We'll talk more tomorrow."

She gently helped him settle into bed. But Yibo didn't sleep that night. His mind kept drifting...Zhan-ge still hadn't been seen or heard from. The worry gnawed at him until he couldn't relax at all.

The next day, by noon, Yibo was discharged from the hospital and brought home.

▫️🔹🔸▪️

Sen Wen was kneeling in front of his mother, who was seated and staring at him in disbelief. He buried his face in his knees, tears streaming down his cheeks as he said, "Mummy, I don't know what came over me. Please have mercy on me. Beg Dad to forgive me. Beg Yibo's family too... ask them to forgive me. I can't imagine losing him. Please help me, speak to Dad. Maybe then they'll agree to the marriage."

His mother frowned. "Are you even in your right mind, Sen Wen?"

He lifted his head to look at her, tears falling. "I swear, Mum, I don't know why I did what I did. Please, help me talk to Dad."

She sighed. "Go talk to him yourself, Sen Wen. I won't involve myself, not after what you did. He's still angry with me."

He stood and walked to the door. She watched him with surprise. This was the first time he'd stepped into the house since the incident... it was like he had been thrown in by force. Her whole body tensed. She thought, What has gotten into my son? From the beginning, she knew it wasn't his idea to cancel the wedding. So then who's behind this? Who manipulated him like this? She shook her head. "I'll find out for sure…" she muttered, leaving the room.

Nainai was sitting in the sitting room with Beiting, insisting she must find a way to contact Zhan.

Beiting tried calling him for the third time, clearly worried. "His phone is still off, Ayi. It's been switched off since yesterday."

Nainai's eyes widened in horror, nearly breaking into sobs. "Beiting, do you think Zhan went off and…kill himself?" Then she burst into tears, staring at Beiting. "We're finished. We've truly ruined everything."

Beiting frowned. "Come on, Ayi. Why would he hurt himself?"

A knock and greeting from the door silenced them instantly. Yibo, who had been lying down in Nainai's room, sat up immediately, his heart racing at the familiar voice.

"Who could that be now?" Nainai muttered as she turned to Beiting.

Beiting answered the greeting as she looked toward the door. It was Sen Wen. He walked into the sitting room with his head bowed. Beiting looked at him in astonishment.

Nainai stood abruptly. "Now I've seen everything. Who is this, Beiting? Who let him into my sitting room?"

Sen Wen knelt in front of her slowly, his voice barely above a whisper. "Please, Nainai… don't take Yibo away from me. I don't even know what got into me. I swear, I didn't mean to hurt him. Please, forgive me. I love Yibo. I can't live without him. Help me… please, don't let them take him from me."

He was crying so hard, his whole body trembling. Beiting stared at him, her heart softening. He looked completely broken, and the weight loss on him was obvious.

Nainai sat down and burst into tears. Narrowing her eyes at him with a mix of fury and pity, she snapped, "You stupid boy. What madness possessed you to deceive my grandson, cause him pain, and then run off? You've embarrassed us before the entire world. People are laughing at us in every corner. What should we do with you now? You better leave this place before Quentin sees you. I don't want any trouble. Zong would've been better!"

In a panic, Sen Wen grabbed her hand. "Please, Nainai, I don't even understand why I did what I did. Please, don't separate me from Yibo. I'll lose my mind."

Yibo ran into the bathroom, sobbing uncontrollably.

Nainai glared at him. "You don't know why you did it? You don't know?"

He cried harder. "I swear, Nainai. I don't know what happened to me. I don't know why I acted that way. Please don't take Yibo from me. I know you're the only one who'll truly listen to me."

Nainai burst into fresh tears. "Oh, what a disaster. You've lost your sense of what's right and wrong, Sen Wen. I knew it... something was wrong. This isn't like you. Now what do we do? Yibo's already married to someone else!"

Sen Wen suddenly lifted his head, eyes frozen on her in shock.

Beiting let out a quiet sigh. "Let's wait until his parents return. Then we'll know what to do, Sen Wen."

Sen Wen turned to her. "Please, Aunty, say something. I can't imagine losing him. I just can't."

"Don't worry," Beiting said gently. "Go home. We'll figure something out."

Nainai wiped her tears. "Yes, go now. We'll see what can be done. You're a good boy, after all."

His heart thumping, he asked, "Can I come back later, Nainai?"

"No," Beiting said. "It's late. Come tomorrow. I'll speak to my brothers."

Sen Wen approached her again, kneeling with tears still falling. "Thank you, Aunty. May you always be blessed."

Beiting couldn't even respond. Her heart ached for him.

In a soft voice, she said, "Don't worry. Go now, Sen Wen."

He stood slowly and walked to the door, wiping his tears as he exited. Nainai turned to Beiting and broke down in frustrated sobs.

"You see now, Beiting? You see what Ning Li's parents said about Yichen? Something is definitely going on. I knew from the start... Sen Wen couldn't have done that to my grandson without a reason. He's such a thoughtful, well-mannered boy. His father is an honorable man, and all their wealth is clean and hard-earned. That's what I liked most...he doesn't steal or cheat like the rest of this country's crooks. Everything he owns is legitimate. We must look into this seriously and give this boy a second chance. Now I'm just waiting for AJi to return so we get the full story. And if what we suspect is true, I swear, I'll shake this house to its foundation. Honestly, if Zhan wanted the wedding, would he have run away?"

"No," she continued. "He's out there chasing whatever nonsense the world is offering. He doesn't want this marriage. He only agreed because he thought no one would hurt his brother. What does he even need from Yibo? God help me."

Beiting didn't respond. Her mind was too overwhelmed. She couldn't even register everything Nainai was saying. All she could think about was how much Sen Wen's pain had moved her.

Around 11:30 PM, Nainai was asleep on the couch in the sitting room. Yibo hadn't stopped crying since Sen Wen left, and she refused to sleep in her room because of his cries. That's why she curled up on the couch.

The sitting room door creaked open quietly. He stepped in, locked the door behind him, and stood at the threshold, watching her.

After a few seconds, he tiptoed gently toward her bedroom and slowly opened the door.

Yibo was lying under her duvet, even his head covered, though he wasn't asleep. He thought it was Nainai, so he didn't move.

The man by the door smiled softly, crossed his arms, and leaned against the doorframe, staring at Yibo. Yibo didn't flinch.

Then, quietly, the man closed the door and walked toward the bed.

Yibo's eyes flew open under the duvet, as the familiar scent reached his nose…
