Aertherium: Chronicle of Magic and Technology

Aetherium, a land full of wonders, known for varieties of races inhabiting there, divided into various nations. In this land magic is considered a valuable resource for nearly everything, thus, as the result learning magic become common for all, but not everyone can wield magic. Magic can only be used by those who have strong connection to mystic forces and by learning and understanding the mystic force as well as constantly defying the nature, they acquire supernatural powers allow them to wield magic, on other hand even if one learns about magic, they cannot acquire the supernatural power and thus, cannot use magic. As the result, inequality between mages and normal people grew, as without magic one can neither cast spell nor they can use alchemy to magic items. However, Terre Sainte, the very place very first mages appeared, a certain family made a discovery, for long time they researched about the nature, and discovered a truth about forces in universe. Those who possess no connection to mystic energy have instead possess strong connection cosmic energy. Mystic forces, is supernatural energy that bends the nature to one's will but cosmic energy is part of nature itself. Thus, in order to unleash the other power one must accept the law of nature rather than defying it, and for that they must learn about the working of nature and implement it into something useful. Thus, the group decides to study nature, and craft various object, not the simple ones, but complex ones that require strong scientific understanding of world, this succeeds and they unleashed a new type of power which is the result of understanding of cosmic force as well as embracing the nature, they name this new power, the natural power. Unlike supernatural power that grants supernatural abilities to the wielders, the natural powers instead boosts one's intelligence and unstanding, allow them understand the nature better than others but also gives them the abilities to create something that either difficult or impossible for those with supernatural power to create. Thus, with these people a new path was born, the path of technologist. With the strength of nature powers, technologists craft various devices that could replace both spell and magic items, ultimately removing the inequality that plaqued the entire Aetherium, thus starting the industrial revolution, resulting in creation of modern transports, automatons, repair tools, computers, electronics, new communication devices, etc., and before everyone knew it the entire world changed. Unfortunately, while one problem was solved a new problem emerged, the magic and technology can't co-exist, technology doesn't work properly in magic field, and the higher conentration of mystic forces cause gears to bind, friction to disappear or becoming impossibly high, springs warp, chemical reaction go haywire, short circuits takes place in electronics and so on, of course the same thing goes for magic, as in place where concentration of cosmic forces dampens the magic, causing magic spell to grow weaker or the mage himself/herself become seriously ill in presence of machines. To make the matter worse the magical items is reduced to ordinary items in hands of technologists, while the technology if used by mages cause critical failures or accidents. This results in the great divide which cause mages and technologists to blame each other for their lack of progress, mages believes that technology is destroying the natural order and they must stop the spread of technology to restore the order in the world, while technologists believes the magic is hindering the world's progress and must be suppressed. This eventually lead to a civil war between mages and technologists, of course, as the overall strength og magic and technology is technically equal, there was no victor causing both sides unwillingly hold a truce and sign the peace treaty. All the civil war ended, the damage was done, both sides saw each other with utter disdain, mages are trying their best to improve their magic to outshine the technology, technologists also doing everything to create new technologies and to improve existing ones to outshine the magic. Although many laws and bills are passed to prevent another magic-technology conflict, the resentment remains, everyone knows that the current peace will be eventually be broken and the war will begin once more, to prevent this, the alliance of mages and technologists, who are known to treat and respect both sides are formed, the name of the alliance is equalist alliance, whose primary goal is to make sure both mage and technologist co-exist peacefully, create positive opinions of both sides, and to prevent any more conflicts between both, thus, the true peace was finally appeared, although most mage and technologists still look down on each other. When everything returned to normal, it is believes the no more bad things will happen but nobody knows that a tragedy is soon bound to happen.
