Chapter 24 - Vascos Party

Two months passed like a quiet wind. Each day after school, Jalen trained. His body had become leaner, stronger, more defined. Even when he looked in the mirror, the changes were subtle but clear. What surprised him most wasn't just the physical progress but how quickly this body adapted. Every movement felt natural. Every technique he practiced seemed to sink in with ease.

He never skipped a session. Rain or shine, he trained.

The only person who noticed the changes was his butler, who offered more protein shakes and quiet nods of approval. That was enough.

Then one day at school, as he passed the courtyard, Vasco approached him.

Jalen stopped. The last time they had spoken was tense. But Vasco's expression wasn't hostile. Just calm.

"Hey," Vasco said. "Got a minute?"

Jalen nodded.

"I wanted to clear something up. About before." Vasco scratched the back of his neck. "I was wrong about you. We're cool now, right?"

Jalen nodded again, slower this time. "Yeah. We're good."

Vasco smiled a little and reached into his pocket. "I'm having a small thing this weekend. Just a few people. Riverside spot. You and Daniel should come."

Jalen looked down at the note Vasco handed him. Simple. Just a time and place.

That weekend, the air was fresh. A gentle breeze rolled off the river where Vasco had set up a few mats, a cooler, and a grill. Only six or seven people were there. Daniel waved from the edge of the water where he skipped stones.

Mira was laughing at something Zack said. Even Mary Kim had shown up and gave Jalen a small nod when he arrived. The water sparkled under the soft sun. The sound of the river was calming. No noise. No tension. Just peace.

Vasco came over with two drinks in hand and passed one to Jalen.

Jalen looked out at the calm water. For once, there were no secrets. No pressure. Just a quiet moment in a loud life.

He didn't say much for the rest of the afternoon. He didn't need to. He felt it.

He belonged.
